prize give-away now over!!
i've done my best to pm or email everyone, most people have replied and got their first choices.a few have been difficult to track down and a couple haven't replied.i'm very sorry if you missed out.i did my best.i didn't want it to drag on till next year.
a big thank you to ben for making it happen, all the cash and prize donators, and of course all the devs for their hard work and good will, and all the voters for making the winners win! oh,and i'd like to thank my production team tom, dick and harry, and my lovely wife for never being here when i need her,and my mum and dad for having a quicky on the ferry to the isle of man and of course halibut and cod....
spacedad - Sun Oct 11, 2009 11:12 am
let me start with 30 lovely wooden roses!
GaryG - Mon Oct 12, 2009 7:37 am
Has anything official been said about non-cash donations? I can't see a call for donations from companies like in previous years..?
duncanparsons - Mon Oct 12, 2009 9:15 am
Ben has said that he doesn't mind them being offered, but can't administer the distribution himself. Meffy stepped into the breach last time to do it as Tuz was overwhelmed by other things.
So far no-one has stepped forward. I have considered it, but currently not able to say 'yea'.
Will see what I can offer tho
de la Mancha - Tue Oct 13, 2009 1:19 am
I'm happy to donate some non-cash prizes, plugins and bundles etc, but it really needs someone who is going to organise the distribution of the prizes first I think. No volunteers so far? (Sorry I can't commit to it myself)
spacedad - Tue Oct 13, 2009 1:23 am
yeah,i just thought i'd try and get it started and worry about the distribution later, otherwise it may not happen at all.
NEK-X - Tue Oct 13, 2009 6:39 pm
Hi spacedad
Very nice Idea !!
I also would like to donate some Plugins (not published yet),
if you would take care of the award
The donators find a way possible together?
Thank you for your engagement!
Kind greetings ... and Good Luck for the Challenge

jobromedia - Tue Oct 13, 2009 9:44 pm
Apart from my plugin which is open source I'm about to donate my entire JBM/TST plugins collection this year. Loads of unreleased goodies from the last 7 years. No sourcecode this year in other words, but I think that many here prefer prefabricated plugins
GaryG - Wed Oct 14, 2009 1:06 am
Well, my muse has well and truly deserted me this year (or i'm just getting thicker/less inspired with age...) so I won't be submitting anything this year.
So, I guess I could volunteer to help with distribution.
I'll mail Ben and see what is involved.
spacedad - Wed Oct 14, 2009 1:28 am
cool,thanks guys!
spacedad - Wed Oct 14, 2009 1:38 am
de la mancha,if you're still keen, drop us a name of a bundle or 2 and i'll put it in the first post.
de la Mancha - Wed Oct 14, 2009 12:41 pm

L-Day - Thu Oct 15, 2009 2:35 am
i think those prices are ok too

if can choose any of bundles or etc. from comercial goodies...
spacedad - Thu Oct 15, 2009 3:05 am
nice one steve.
GaryG - Thu Oct 15, 2009 3:50 am
Just so you know, I've mailed Ben and offered my services, just waiting to hear back.
de la Mancha - Thu Oct 15, 2009 3:53 am
no problem. They are meant as 8 separate prizes by the way.
Last year we had prizes from NI, Imageline, Uh-e, Camel Audio and many more. I wonder if Ben has approached them? If not, GaryG would you be up for asking them? It would be nice to get a wide support for the contest from the bigger names and better it comes from someone 'neutral' ie not an entrant
GaryG - Thu Oct 15, 2009 1:23 pm
I guess I could fire off a few emails though I have no real connections... Maybe Ben has a better 'professional' relationship with these companies, would sound better coming from him?
Whatever, I haven't heard back from Ben yet (maybe PM isn't he best way of contacting him?) so can't really do much till I'm "official".
rlahalla - Wed Oct 28, 2009 3:00 pm
Hey guys, top 3 entrants will receive a copy of TeamDNR's new MixControl channelstrip bundle
dusted william - Thu Oct 29, 2009 7:28 am

Perimeter Sound - Thu Oct 29, 2009 2:30 pm
We always try to offer something to show some support for the Dev Challenge. We'd like to offer 2 Dvd loop sample compilation downloads as prizes, and a Tone Set bundle, all 6 Tone Sets for the Podfarm/Gearbox software. The Tone Sets would need to go to a dev who has the Line 6 hardware/software needed to use them of course though, so it need not be awarded based purely on what place they get in the final standings. Same for the dvd loop downloads really, they are just prizes to be awarded to some entrants, so whoever is or ends up in charge of prize distro can hopefully find a proper recipient.
I browsed down the list of entries for this year earlier, and most of them look pretty sharp, I'm looking forward to giving some of them a test run in the next week or two.
manytone - Thu Oct 29, 2009 2:56 pm
Count ManyTone in also for a few non cash prizes.
We'll donate:
2 copies of ManyBass
2 copies of ManyGuitar
2 copies of the Fretless Bass
2 copies of the Upright Bass
2 copies of The Ultimate Bass kit.
(we would also let the winners switch out their prize for another of equal value if they wish)
That's 10 prizes right there
Best of luck to all the entrants. There sure does appear to be some goodies in the lot.
Cheers
Paul

Well don't feel like that, I'm just trying to prepare Gary for a big spread sheet
To make it easy on Gary perhaps just a drawing for the non cash prizes would be easiest. Or maybe the cash winners get to pick 1 non cash prize and the rest go into a drawing?
Just a thought and some ideas as I know Meffy had a tough time last DC organizing all the non cash prizes.
Paul
manytone - Thu Oct 29, 2009 3:19 pm
Just a note to add about how it worked in the last DC:
Each entrant was allowed to pick a prize from the list. The problem arose when Meffy and the other entrants were sometimes waiting for days or a week before the previous entrant picked their prize. Although this gave the entrant a choice of prize, it did cause an issue with the distribution.
Any method of simplifying it would probably be beneficial to the guy who has to sort all the prizes.
Paul
Astralp - Thu Oct 29, 2009 3:29 pm
I'm happy to offer up some prizes:
2 x Homegrown Complete
2 x Astralis Pack
2 x Black Magic
2 x Homegrown Piano
Great to have so many entries, looking forward to having a play with them all over the weekend. It was tight getting my entry finished, only just made the deadline! Good luck to everyone!
take care
Andy

Ah, see I was thinking that prizes were designated by the place the developer comes in. I think I had a little brain fart when I saw 10 prizes, my head said "1 for each in the top 10"
I know my mind has a mind of it's own

Maybe it would be easier if the organizer randomly picks a prize (from a hat?) for each dev, based on what their plug's final ranking was. In addition to speeding up the distribution process, it would also give everyone a good chance at landing even the coolest prize no matter what ranking their entry wins, but it would still weight the odds slightly in favor of those who got a higher ranking because the prize pool would be larger for them. Additionally, if we have more prizes than devs, those with a higher rank would have more prizes picked for them.
spacedad - Sat Oct 31, 2009 6:57 am
i don't like the random prize thing, cos it might end up with loads of people getting things they don't want,.
if they choose for themselves,as last time,it didn't mean that all the 'best' prizes went first,
cos everyone has their own idea of what 'best' means.
fish would be top prize for the cat,but not for the sparrow.
my 2c
matt42 - Sat Oct 31, 2009 7:10 am
Maybe a deadline for choices? If you can't be arsed making your decision on time you have to live with the leftovers.
eidenk - Sat Oct 31, 2009 7:11 am
As I don't have paypal and hence can't make a cash donation I thought about pledging a redundant copy of Photoshop 7 I have if that's OK as a non-cash prize. Obviously the winner of it would have to pass me his name and address so that I can mail it to him. Comes with no printed manual but is of course an original CD in its original CD case with serial number sticker.

That sounds like a reasonable idea.

Imho, Photoshop 7 would be a great prize. I'm still using 7 on my home machine for GUIs and photo editing. Its got the majority of what most people would use Photoshop for.
ugo - Sat Oct 31, 2009 7:29 am
By the way, I'll be donating some prizes too. I just haven't decided the details yet.
Should this thread be turned into a sticky?
synthgeek - Sat Oct 31, 2009 11:22 pm
I would also like to donate something, in the form of samples.
spacedad - Mon Nov 02, 2009 2:01 am
thanks for all the prizes guys,i'm still nursing a chicken pox baby atm,so i'll update the first post asap.
(if garyg wants to take over,he could copy the list and start a new thread,if everyone thinks it would be more fair being managed by a non-contestant.or i'm too slow,i don't mind either way,)
spacedad - Mon Nov 02, 2009 5:42 am
wow,the list is picking up,many thanks everyone!
i've updated the 1st page.
@synthgeek,thanks,just post the name and i'll update.

For N entrants this procedure has a time complexity of O(N). Here's a O(1) algorithm:
1) Every entrant sorts the prize list according to his personal preferences.
2) After a given time (lets say 2 weeks) the organizer distributes the prizes:
- the winner gets the first item on his list
- the second place entrant gets the first entry on his list which is still available
- the third place entrant gets the first entry on his list which is still available
- ...
We could use a modified version of Ben's voting script for the ordered list. The default value of all entries is "don't care". If someone is interested in some prizes only, he does not have to specify the rest. If the first entry on an entrants list which is still available is a "don't care", he is skipped and re-queued to the end of the list of entrants.
That wouldn't be too complicated and I would definitively prefer it over a random distribution.
Ciao,
Christian

I decided that all participants may choose one (or two or all) plugins out of my open source plugins (already more than 70)!
Damn, sometimes I really regret releasing most of my work as open source
Christian
ugo - Wed Nov 11, 2009 7:22 pm

Since the winners have now been announced (congrats to all!), will those of us who are donating non-cash prizes be notified via PM when the recipients have been determined, or should we just keep an eye on this thread?
spacedad - Thu Dec 03, 2009 2:07 pm
i haven't even had time to look at the winners yet, sorry.
i'll get to it asap.
rlahalla - Thu Dec 03, 2009 2:21 pm
Just a heads up, I have already contacted the winners to receive their copies of MixControl. Just waiting on replies..
spacedad - Thu Dec 03, 2009 2:30 pm

congrats everyone!
i'm trying to find out the other runners up positions.

i see ben wrote;
"daz.diamond's Twin Engined Verb was just 4 points off the third place spot so I feel it would be appropriate to select this as the "wild card random selection", getting 10% of the prize fund."
so should daz not get the first non-cash-prize?
daz.diamond - Fri Dec 04, 2009 3:35 pm
I got the impression that the non-cash prizes ran in parallel and therefore bootsie get's 1st pick.
of course I could be wrong
spacedad - Fri Dec 04, 2009 3:37 pm

btw,ben just pmed me;
"I may just cave and make the whole list public on Monday."
de la Mancha - Sat Dec 05, 2009 3:28 am
Last time, 4th place got first pick of the non-cash prizes, then it ran through to last place and restarted at first place
de la Mancha - Sat Dec 05, 2009 3:29 am
which is fair I think
Meffy - Sat Dec 05, 2009 3:44 am
[edit: Deleted clarification 'cos someone might misconstrue it as criticism, which it wasn't. Also wasn't important or interesting, no loss to anyone.]
spacedad - Sat Dec 05, 2009 4:15 am
well, lets keep it simple for now and let #5 go first.
then decide later if the top 4 can have a pick after everyone's had a go?
(maybe after everyone's had a go #4 gets to choose,then #3,#2#1.)
we'll see if that seems fair after everyone's picked...
so if LpD would like to pick something from the fantastic pool of prizes.....
daz.diamond - Sat Dec 05, 2009 4:22 am
5th cash prize not decided yet ? - the dev's dev ?
spacedad - Sat Dec 05, 2009 4:26 am
oh,shit.yeah,that's not decided.
bloody hell, these prizes'll be here till next xmas.
daz.diamond - Sat Dec 05, 2009 4:41 am
yeh, sry - not meaning to be awkward and I'm not going to fight for any particular outcome ... I though Christian's idea (further up) was adopted, but then there's no official adoption method ... so ... what's the best method for picking 5th ?
spacedad - Sat Dec 05, 2009 4:45 am
sorry daz,not sure what you mean?
daz.diamond - Sat Dec 05, 2009 5:09 am
- what I mean is I'm not trying to be grumpy, or greedy, and I'm not here to dispute whatever (eventual) distribution method is settled upon - I'm amazed I got 4th, and hopefully, appropriately grateful
... are we all meant to have a seperate vote for 5th as dev's choice, or is this done through the votes cast by (most) dev's in the main voting. Christian's idea was for a streamlined distribution and could be applied from any rank, onwards :

I don't want to abuse but I think it would be cool to know 1) how many people did take part in the vote, 2) how many people donated, and 3) how many points each entrant scored.

spacedad - Mon Dec 07, 2009 2:46 pm

I was suprised to squeeze into the top 10, I didn't expect to do that well at all. I wasn't expecting anything at all therefore... however, a copy of Manytone Upright Bass would be marvelous, if there is one up for grabs still.
FrettedSynth - Tue Dec 08, 2009 11:27 am
If no one grabs it first I would love a copy of either Fretless Bass or the Upright Bass. Thanks Manytones for providing all you did to the competition.
Thanks spacedad for the PM and all the work this must cause.

If still available when my turn comes, I'd be interested in Homegrown Complete, second choice would be Ugo's Spawn + Tunguska.
spacedad - Tue Dec 08, 2009 12:27 pm
thanks for the choices guys, keep 'em comin'....
oh,and L-Day...wakey,wakey hands off snakey!
Minouris - Tue Dec 08, 2009 12:39 pm
Hey folks
Grats to the top three, and everyone else too

24th is much better than I'd expected for Armchair Guitarist (I was starting to wonder if it was invisible to all but a few people

), but I'm not nearly as surprised by that as how some of the others placed... I'd have expected some of them to have placed much higher
Anyway, prizes...
Any of the ManyTone guitar progs would be good (ManyGuitar for preference, for obvious reasons... My plugin needs something to make guitar noises ^.~). Also, I'm sufficiently impressed with Metatron to want to see what PM can do commercially, so if all the ManyTone stuff goes then Aetherial or Cerebrum, followed by the Homegrown stuff.
Thanks to Spacedad for organising this side of things
Astralp - Tue Dec 08, 2009 12:45 pm
