All the banter with SK got me thinking how hard can this Gui designing be?
Needless to say it's harder than I thought

but I thought I'd share my efforts with you....
http://i46.tinypic.com/pniqd.jpg
I know some of you will say it takes up too much real estate, others will say they prefer an ableton type 'simpler' interface but this was an exercise in textures and effects.
All feedback welcome
[edit2]
Reduced the size of 'the fuzz' from insane to normal
This is what I did for Bassbomb from Dlm
http://i45.tinypic.com/vr96j8.jpg
And here's a Synth1 effort...
EDIT: 2012
I thought I'd come back to this thread and post a little update, plus it's nice to keep things chronologically laid out. Here's some schtuff I've done...
You should be able to drag them to a new window to view full size (it's only the forum that shrinks them)
^That's a mystery one, that might be upcoming
(Again, try dragging to a new window to view full size)
As always, I welcome and appreciate feedback

Just don't say the magic words, "So sue me."
Also: Looks nice and clean, if large. Could use some "glow" around the actuated button, and to my eyes all that saturated cyan looks wrong with the more subtle other colors. Matters of taste I suppose. Good luck with it.
Aloysius - Mon Jan 25, 2010 5:53 am

lol, thanks.
I don't expect anything will ever come of it, was just playing around. I've already learnt loads, like how to do a knob, didn't have a clue what I was gonna do when I started. Also the chrome text is new to me and the buttons, ok, everything lol
Which saturated cyan are you reffering to? The 'title'?
Igro - Mon Jan 25, 2010 5:58 am
So we have scotty replacement.

scoobz wrote:

That and the (to my vision) odd knob highlight. The buttons are less intense and look more realistic.
scoobz - Mon Jan 25, 2010 6:06 am
Yeah, I hear you. What I wanted to do was a series of led segments around the knob, I'm still trying to work out how to divide a circle into a number of segments.
One of my hobbies is fashion photo retouching so I know most of the tools but measuring and being accurate isn't in my skillset (yet

). Will make some tweaks.
Meffy - Mon Jan 25, 2010 6:22 am
One other thing -- be sure your highlights are consistent; that their directions either match (better) or converge toward a point (rarely looks right).
scoobz - Mon Jan 25, 2010 7:25 am
Not perfect but I was thinking more along these lines....

Still on my gui designing quest
Here's something I knocked up for fun for DLM's forthcoming Bassbomb....

The original in case you haven't seen it already....

Nice. The font colour is better, but I liked the knob of the first try more. You could use the red circle around it to make a glowing sector to indicate the amount and the inner glas could glow up in orange from the incoming signal...
manytone - Thu Jan 28, 2010 2:20 pm
You got something going on there scoobz!
Nice work, for first attempts those gui's are fantastic!
I can imagine what you could do once fully inspired and the learning curve has past.
Can I contact you for future work
We are working on a very cool skinning system for future plugs that has a nice editor for making skins and aligning things proper etc. I bet you would have a blast with it as it makes things easier.
Anyways, cheers and again, nice stuff.

scoobz - Thu Jan 28, 2010 2:22 pm
Thanks Wok, I've since discovered knobman (read yesterday

) and have been searching through posts here on KvR and found many fine examples by yourself. Good ideas, if anything every came of that gui that's probably the way I'd go.

Thanks for the kind words Paul. The learning curve is steep but enjoyable. And of course you're welcome to contact me in future
scoobz - Thu Jan 28, 2010 2:27 pm
Oh and can I just say Knobman is seriously addictive! Got about 7 original (well as much as they can be) designs in the bag and ready to roll

Glasgene, thanks bud

Ok so what should I have a go at next? (Don't wanna do oatmeal

I like the burgundy one better. Quite classy, and easy on the eyes.

dlM Impakter , Voyager or Poly-Ana?
scoobz - Fri Jan 29, 2010 9:42 am
Hopefully something is going to happen with Dlm, although not with bassbomb unfortunately, so I'll wait and see on that one.
Voyager.... Did a search, Arguru? It's a list of parameters lol (I'll put that in the maybe one day list)
And polyana?!! I get a headache looking at it, I can see why you suggested it
Thankyou for the suggestions, keep em coming
Oh and covalent, I prefer the burgundy one too
freddemillio - Fri Jan 29, 2010 11:01 am
Nice work. Clean, easy to understand. Artistic without an excess of flash and sparkle that gets in the way of actually using the interface.
scoobz - Sat Jan 30, 2010 8:03 am
Thanks freddemillio.
Another one for you all, Hlis helped me out with a work flow, turns out I was making things more difficult for myself than they need be so things have gotten a bit easier.
Had look around and a lot of people seem to be interested in a skin for synth1, so I had a crack at it. Stayed a bit more traditional on this one, here it is @ 120%...

Very nice work, that looks like you've included some of the stuff I was talking about

I'd make the lines on the knobs dark though for better contrast with the light knob colour, but otherwise it's really up my street
scoobz - Sat Jan 30, 2010 10:16 am
Thanks Steve, well I couldn't let all that fine advice go to waste
Funnily enough the knobs were the thing I had the biggest trouble with, went through about 5 different designs!
This one was an excercise in 'yeah that looks good, now back it off 20%!'

I'm doing a vst based on the Jupiter 6 and I need a GUI, but not one that looks like a Jupiter 6. Interested?

Love all your stuff. Just went through the thread. I love the IIEQ pro skins. I agree with the comments on Bassbomb, little too sharpening. Good luck with your skinning quest.
By the way, your Tyrell N6 v2 skin on another thread is cool too.

Thanks, yeah that bassbomb one was from two years ago

What's nice for me is seeing the progression and refinement. Hopefully I'll be posting in another year and there'll be as much of an improvement again
I decided to keep going with Tyrell after our little discussion, there's another guy, Phrek, doing a gui based on the original render too and I don't want tread on his toes so keeping that one for myself I think
You'll have to update your thread, be nice to see how you're getting on.

I have not worked on it since last update. Lost my motivation but I will finish it anyway, just for myself. I would like to see where it's going with new tricks that I am planning to try. I totally agree, progression and refinement is important.

Thanks, sadly it's not, I spoke with DLM at the time and he said he was happy with the stock interface for that one but we may do something in future. That was the last I heard and that was years ago.
Funnily that was the one I was most happy with at the time, now all I see is things that need polishing up
I've got a few projects on the go and will have to find a way to generate more, it's something I enjoy doing, so hopefully the ratio of ideas:actual guis will go up

Hey guys,
Something new from me....
It's just an idea I was knocking around whilst practicing some new techniques. I've literally done everything differently on this one and also gone for a bit more of a realistic look than usual.

Good stuff scoobz. I don't like the font on Camel Crusher. Looks a little too Synthmaker. Some texture on the knobs would be good too.

Thanks, it's was a good experiment
And it's not that the image isn't displayed, it's all chewed up with resampling and aliasing. I have to work quite hard to get the sharpness so every pixel counts

osiris wrote:

Thanks again, strangely the thing I struggled with most on this one was the fonts in general, they're normally not a problem. I ended up going on a 2 hour font hunt which turned up nothing

All the ones I like cost loadsa money!
I also normally make a knob in knobman (with some kind of noise) and import that into photoshop but I just drew one by hand this time and ommited that stage
Thanks for the comments
scoobz - Tue Apr 10, 2012 6:27 am
Updated the fonts (they were bugging me

)
I haven't done the noise on the knobs yet though
osiris - Tue Apr 10, 2012 8:10 am
I like those. Much cleaner. Maybe a little bolder. Are you using Knobman? I know on some of my SE stuff, I had to copy/paste like 3 layers of lettering to get it vivid enough to show up well. And if you don't copy/paste them in the exact spot.....it looks like what I see after 7 beers.
scoobz - Tue Apr 10, 2012 1:30 pm
I had grey text set to about 70% opacity, that'll do it every time!
Brought the text back a bit but I dropped it

...........
Still seems to work tho

I like it looks pretty good. Knobs look little bland though just my personal observation, I love the textures on the panels and the borders.

scoobz - Sat Apr 14, 2012 10:22 am
Hey all,
I went a bit further down the realistic route, let me know what you think
Aloysius - Sat Apr 14, 2012 10:31 am
It looks genuinely 'heavy'. Like a real piece of hardware. In the interest of further realism, I wonder if you could make the rotary-dials protrude more? It would hardly be possible to manipulate the rotary-dials the way they look at present, as their depth would be a bit too shallow for human fingers to grab at and turn.
osiris - Sat Apr 14, 2012 11:41 am
That's very good scoobz
scoobz - Sun Apr 15, 2012 5:26 am
Thanks guys
It was a simple error Aloysius, the last thing I did was place the divider rings around the knobs, unfortunately I placed em ontop of the shadows
scoobz - Mon Apr 16, 2012 8:36 am
Past couple of days I've been trying to teach myself 3d, which is no mean feat lol, the learning curve is steep

osiris - Tue Apr 17, 2012 2:38 am
Your page looking good. What is 'upcoming synth'?
scoobz - Tue Apr 17, 2012 6:31 am
Hey,
Synth1 never made it

I contacted the guy when he made his major update but he wasn't interested, there's a lot I would change about that gui now
Upcoming synth is a secret lol hopefully it pans out, we'll see
And Highkoo, "I no, rite? Hmmmm shiny :donuts: "
The specks aren't my doing, it's a problem with the render engine

Feedback please peoples.
highkoo - Sun Apr 22, 2012 11:08 am
Damn, coming right along!
I dig it.
There are so many more issues to deal with in 3D GUI designs. I guess it comes down to texture and shadow, which are just not in a 2D design.
As 3D designs get more complex, the purity and cleanliness of the textures/hues/saturations start to look more fake as the whole design is taken in. When a design is meant to look 'real', or at least 'dimensional', eventually you have to add some dirt to some part of it to show some subtle contrast, which I spose signifies to our subconscious that these are made out of different materials, so have aged/weathered at different rates in the 'real world' that they are supposed to live in.
And that could go as far as a knob design that is meant to look like a soft rubber knob that has a little cut in it, or paint rubbing off the meters, etc.
Anyway, imo, the worst example of a fix for this is when you see a GUI with nice 3D knobs, and a half assed 'brushed metal' texture on the backplate. I hate that shit. Subtlety is the key. A texture at 5% will have an effect on the whole design.
I think your design would benefit from just a very subtle noise/texture added to
just the backplate. The knob sections look good clean, but they start to get lost in the clean background. I mean, it does look like a homogeneous unit which is good, and the other extreme is that they are completely isolated in a sea of unmatched texture which is no good, but I think there is a middle ground to get to.
Theres my art school prattle.
Hey can the blue on the knobs get brighter as the value increases?
Shiiiiiieeet!
Crackbaby - Sun Apr 22, 2012 11:36 am

+1 Everything highkoo said.
scoobz - Sun Apr 22, 2012 2:17 pm
Thanks guys,
Highkoo, yup you got me, I was all excited and forgot to add the noise
Hopefully you can tell by the previous two (the one at the top of this page and the new camel crusher gui) that I like a bit of grit here and there. It's been a steep old hill to climb, learning 3d from scratch, it was so frustrating knowing what I wanted to do but not being able to do it but I feel like I'm getting somewhere now.
Anyways here it is again with a pinch of salt....
And also something else I've been playing around with, again it's only a rough concept and there's a lot of dead space but it's more about getting the form right at this stage, oh, and I'm claiming the name
I think I should change my signature to 'drag to a new window or right click view image' lol
