[Edit] with version 1.6 beta3, anyone can enable any plugin - just drag its dll into the plugins list. Therefore, there is not need for these requests any more, other than for keeping track of the plugins that don't work. The list of managed plugins (with the number of presets, updated in realtime) is available here.

Tried these, they won't work unless fixed by their authors:
Korg M1 (crashes if seChunk() is called with a preset, without first opening the editor window.)
Korg WaveStation (doesn't support getChunk()/setChunk() for presets)
ZynAddSubFX (I was able to get Zen to import and play the presets, but it keeps crashing when browsing through presets. What a pity...)

Actually, what I need is one example of the chunk data, and this must be supported by all synths (because this is how they save their context when the host saves a project).

So in fact, even if they don't handle fxp natively, you can still save them using minihost. You can also use my own little standalone host if you want (just let me know and I'll send it to you).

Wow that is awesome news - did they say why the change of heart?
Big Tick - Tue Sep 21, 2010 2:41 pm
I guess it was just a matter of explaining it clearly and calmly. I made it clear that uploading a preset in Zen is no different than putting online a song made with the synth - it still embeds the preset data.

I have FM7, any chance both get in ? (they are basically different instruments).

Can FM8 load FM7 presets ? or are they different/improved ?

Big Tick wrote:

It can import them but FM8 has a different preset format (ksd, same as several other NI products now)

What do you need to be able to activate them? - I have the lot.
Big Tick - Wed Sep 22, 2010 1:08 pm
I mean, if you save a fxp with FM7 using minihost (or equivalent), can FM8 load it ?

I just need a fxp of each to activate them. In addition, it can be useful if you can give it a test run with my own little standalone host, as this can detect potential incompatibilities with Zen.
aMUSEd - Thu Sep 23, 2010 10:15 am

Yes, and yes.

ZooTooK wrote:

Yes. The only thing is, when you save a fxp of a Reaktor preset in minihost, is it self-contained, e.g. when you load it back, does it actually create the entire Reaktor synth ?
EvilDragon - Fri Sep 24, 2010 7:39 am
I'm not sure about that, regarding Reaktor. Some ensembles contain samples and can be dozens of MB big. I am not sure that all this info saves to FXP.
Big Tick - Fri Sep 24, 2010 7:41 am
well, if you save a song with Reaktor as a vst, and then load the song back, it restores the Reaktor context properly, right?
aMUSEd - Fri Sep 24, 2010 8:05 am
It looks like Reaktor and probably also Kontakt should work fine with Zen from my testing - both will load the correct instrument, ensemble, snapshot and even any tweaks I have made (even if not actually stored in the NI preset - this is something people need to be careful about though when saving presets in Zen - make sure you have not made any changes to them before uploading them)
EvilDragon - Fri Sep 24, 2010 9:13 am
Big Tick wrote:

Yeah. Seems like Reaktor only points to the ensemble on the disk instead of embedding it, if that's the case.

EvilDragon wrote:

Ah, that's too bad.
EvilDragon - Fri Sep 24, 2010 10:53 am
Not really. If you're downloading a preset for a 100 MB ensemble, each preset would be 100 MB if it were embedding the whole ensemble in the FXP! Not really nice. Very Happy

The other thing to consider would be supporting NI's patch format directly, along with FXP/FXB. Reaktor has its snapshot (.ssf) files, Pro-53 has .p5p (patch), .p5b (bank of 8 patches), .p5f (file of 8 banks), .p5a (all 8 files with 8 banks each with 8 patches each, 512 patches total), and others use .ksd Kore sounds (Kore, Kontakt, FM8, Absynth, Massive).
Lying Low - Sat Sep 25, 2010 1:14 am
If you support reaktor this would be great news for me.

I use AudioMulch to host reaktor, and AudioMulch for some reason does not support saving to FXP (it only does FXB) And my general workflow is to have a archive of FXP presets.

Has Zen been tested in AudioMulch?
Big Tick - Sat Sep 25, 2010 1:27 am
Evil Dragon & Lying Low,

The fxp is only required to for me to initialize the plugin (to get the plugin ID). Once I have activated the plugin in Zen, fxp's are not required since all the presets exchange takes place between Zen and the plugin.

For Reaktor, I simply don't know if it would be better to have
- 1 plugin tag called "Reaktor"
- or a multitude of tags, e.g "Reaktor/Spark", "Reaktor/Prizm", ...

Since there are potentially an endless number of ensembles maybe just "Reaktor" would be enough and people can add their own additional tags for specific ensembles they use. The other question is what to do with snaps? Are they treated as presets too (they are sub presets basically)? There are probably as many snapshots out there taking into account all Reaktor ensembles, as there are presets for other plugins.
Big Tick - Sat Sep 25, 2010 1:58 am
I'm not sure what a snap is (versus a preset).
BTW, did you receive my standalone host ?

Big Tick wrote:

Nope never got it.

Each ensemble has it's own list of presets. These are called snapshots in Reaktor parlance.

aMUSEd wrote:

OK then yes, these are the ones that will be managed as presets by Zen.
I've uploaded the host here, just rename the exe to the same name than the dll (e.g, fm8.exe if the plugin is fm8.dll)

'Tick
EvilDragon - Sat Sep 25, 2010 2:22 am
Snap is Reaktor's internal preset for a loaded instrument in an ensemble. Each instrument (including the whole ensemble) can have its own snap. So, for example, you have two synths and an effect loaded in an ensemble. How will Zen know which snapshot to route to which instrument in that ensemble?

Also, just "Reaktor" for tags. There are TOO MANY synths in the user library to make the other naming scheme viable.
Big Tick - Sat Sep 25, 2010 2:30 am
It won't know, but it won't have to. The only thing Zen sees is Reaktor. So when you click the import button, it:
1. asks Reaktor for the data associated with its current internal state
2. asks Reaktor for the name of the current state (e.g, the preset name as defined by Reaktor)
3. creates a new Zen preset with this name and data.

I just need to make sure that step 2. is ok (some plugins out there don't implement it, so that you end up with a bunch of unnamed presets in Zen).
Big Tick - Sat Sep 25, 2010 1:49 pm
OK, I just enabled FM8 and Pro-53. Upload away ! Smile
Big Tick - Sun Sep 26, 2010 12:00 am
and now Massive too !
aMUSEd - Sun Sep 26, 2010 12:18 am
Don't know about the others but preset import for Massive is not working properly - when I click on 1 preset it tries to add 8 of the same. Seeing as there are 8 macro controls I can't help wondering if there is a connection?
aMUSEd - Sun Sep 26, 2010 12:20 am
Clicking through the 8 imported there are differences even though they have the same name - names of macro controls for example
Big Tick - Sun Sep 26, 2010 12:21 am
Is this for regular (1 click) import, or for autoimport ?
aMUSEd - Sun Sep 26, 2010 12:23 am
FM8 just crashes Zen when I try and import anything!
Big Tick - Sun Sep 26, 2010 12:26 am
Arghh ! Just the thing I can't test with FM8 demo !
aMUSEd - Sun Sep 26, 2010 12:28 am
Pro 53 seems to work but its preset management sucks so it's hard to select presets in the first place - this is where adding some arrows for facilitating scrolling presets in a loaded plugin might be useful.

Crap it's impossible with Pro 53 too - the only way to load presets is by changing preset number in the gui which makes it too fiddly and I keep getting dupe messages - presets are jumping about from one to the other
Big Tick - Sun Sep 26, 2010 12:37 am
aMUSed, you can switch presets in Pro-53 (and many others) by clicking on the Pro-53 window, and then using the left/right keys while the mouse cursor is on the window bar.

It only works for synths that have the concept of a "bank", though. Most modern ones have only 1 preset exposed to the host, and force you to switch presets through their built-in management system.

Now you understand why I'm reluctant to activate synths I can't test...
aMUSEd - Sun Sep 26, 2010 12:56 am
OK that worked - got all 512 presets in the factory bank in at least although they need tagging. I've always found Pro 53's preset system useless except in Kore as it has all those presets but you can't easily see them or browse to them - Zen makes that aspect easier at least
Big Tick - Sun Sep 26, 2010 12:59 am
ok so now I need to get my hands on a FM8 and Massive license... Anyone got one that they don't use ? Smile

Happens here too. Once it's imported playing back a preset through Zen gives you a completely different sound. Looks like it's not saving the full patch informtion.
