Altair 4 - The SciFi Sounds Lab
for Wobbles, Drones and more

This lab is more of experimental type mainly for spacey & wobbly stuff, drones and scapes i.e FX-sounds, and it is quite good at doing bell like sounds Wink
In a way it has some similarities to 'circuit bent' musical tools or noise boxes but with some more and fairly sophisticated controls - but not too much.
You can do a lot of crazy stuff with it Wink

updated last public beta is here for dowload (little manual included & diff. patches)
http://www.mediafire.com/?sp55d1chb45j36j

a little demo video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_RY4HWdZYoM

As it is still unnamed yet you may come up with suggestions - preferably with Lab or Box at the end.

The winner will have free choice for one VSTi Plugin from my range
2nd and 3rd choice will get registered version of this one.

And yes you may send patches too ... more than 20 useful patches will be honoured with a Pro version of this plugin.

have fun and please comment
thanks

Originally I was thinking of a name in German "Das Dräuen" roughly to be translated with scary looming but even this translation doesn't reflect the meaning of "Dräuen" as it is also hinting at pending dark doom ... so this won't be a feasable name for outside german speaking countries Sad

It freezes upon loading and just hangs. No error message. I tried it a couple of times and I have to manually shut down Sonar. Too bad as it is very cool and I would really like to lay out a few tracks. But, like I said it works in standalone via SaviHost no problem.

I have never had this problem with any of your synths before and I have tried many of them.

That's quite strange as there is really nothing that exotic inside to provoke such a behaviour ... runs here in several hosts like Cubase LE, Cantabile, MiniHost, VSTHost ...

Anyway I'll look for a possible suspect ...

As of name suggestions well nothing really convincing up to now except one proposition via mail with using 'lab' instead of 'box'

so my idea up to now is:
SciFiSoundsLab or SciFiSoundsBox
me preferring the 1st one Very Happy

EFXlab or FXlab
spacelab
dronelab (maybe that exists already though, sounds familiar)
cleverbox

bonglab ("bong" as in the sound a bell makes, and something to help you get monged)

a little more distorted like Le Bra Drone Retriever would be more funny but the GUI is not matching as the bra is missing ;-(

During yesterday's research I did remember the movie Forbidden Planet from 1956 being the first movie with a complete electronic soundtrack using sounds that could have been done with this plug.

The Forbidden Planet reference is very apt. I had just done apiece called Krell Music using Hollow Sun's Oscillosine when HG Fortune released this instrument. Well, the two instruments complement each other perfectly.

If the name was "ID Machine," "Krell Lab," "Morbius Madness," "Altair 4," or something similar I think it would help customers understand immediately what to expect. And HG is right, this instrument does do a lot of the things the Barron's did with their circuitry albeit a lot easier.

I am writing a piece right now that uses both instruments and will post when finished.

FYI, Mötley Crüe and their fans would find that funny, as they might think that is a reference to cooking up crack cocaine. They used "krell" as a codename for coke or trying to obtain it while on tour. HiHi

yep, once you got familiar with it sounddesign will be fairly easy and lots of fun Very Happy

the tech explanation doesn't really explain the actual behaviour that well, so one has to try it out and listen to what is actually happening. And, there are not too many controls at all - but these are quite efficient and versatile.

I think it is a winner. I haven't bought the pro version yet but I will.

I have been experiencing crashes with the beta in Sonar 7 if I make any changes to parameters during playback. Not sure why it is doing that.
