I'm thinking that 90% of desktopians are..... but what do I know?
For one app, or more?
shanecgriffo - Fri Apr 08, 2011 9:44 pm
well i'm not .. not sure wot me mum's up to tho!
AetherCoyl - Fri Apr 08, 2011 10:22 pm
f**k yeah!
Touch sensitive holographs would be where it's at, but f**k. Not here, not now.
abstractcats - Fri Apr 08, 2011 10:26 pm
I'm not yet but I do want to. My monitor is 32" though.
chj - Fri Apr 08, 2011 10:43 pm
For me it would be cheaper to just get another 19" monitor for a dual screen setup, but I'm waiting until I have enough to splurge on just one widescreen. I think it would be easier to work on than two. Plus it would be multifunctional for DVD's, games, etc.
hibidy - Fri Apr 08, 2011 10:47 pm
I have one 23 incher. Windows in daws/plug/etc are generally so f**king picky and such a pain in the ass less is more. I use "god" for everything so having the monitor front and center works best.
metamorphosis - Fri Apr 08, 2011 10:48 pm
Personally, my mother just has one screen...
djanthonyw - Fri Apr 08, 2011 11:02 pm
I had dual displays but found out that they really sucks for normal tasks such as web and email because you're always looking at just one monitor. Now I just use one 24" display and if I want dual displays I have my laptop's display as a secondary while docked to the 24".

I had a single 24" display, but found out it really sucks for video editing and big audio projects. Now have two 24" and one 42". Try to keep the VSTs off the TV tho. I don't care about normal tasks anymore - I need my space, man, for all my big ideas.
danbroad - Fri Apr 08, 2011 11:37 pm
Just one monitor for me. Had a dual setup for a while, but prefer the simplicity of a single setup.
stanlea - Fri Apr 08, 2011 11:40 pm
I have two mothers, each one has her own screen.

Dual monitors on my system at work, dual monitors on my DAW, dual monitors on the general-purpose/games PC I also have at home. All of them 19" screens except for one, a 24" monitor on the general-purpose system. Will be upgrading one screen to a 24" on my DAW some time this year.
risome - Sat Apr 09, 2011 12:55 am
I did but now with my 27" Mac screen there is no need.
Resonator63 - Sat Apr 09, 2011 3:36 am
I use two screens.Works well for me.
tapper mike - Sat Apr 09, 2011 4:01 am
I handle a lot of code and mix/match data from various sources. I'd run three screens given the opporitunity. For programing/design it allows me to source code while keeping an eye on the end result.
Two screens (though three would be better) are also great for the technical support and database mining I do. Sometimes I have to draw from up to five sources at once to properly collate data. It's nothing compared to being a saute' cook with 20 pans going at once all different menu items with different ingrediants and different special instructions.

I used to use 2 * 22inch lcd's in an extended desktop but now I use either my lappie or desktop with either an dvi cable or hdmi to a 54 inch LCD screen in projector mode. Programs like S1 , R5/ R1.5 and even Maschine look fantastic.
The mixer channels and vst's are cool with less squinting. Plus I mainly stand up to work but when I'm sitting down I have that sweet spot with the JBL's .
Cheers

I have 3: a 28" in the middle flanked by 2 x 19" [square]. All LCD.

Design (rare):
Left the Pictures, right the tools
Webcode (rare):
Left the browser, right the coding tools
Audio Engineering:
Cubase: left the arranger, right the mixer and the plugins
Wavelab: Left the wave files, right the master and the FX
In short:
I'm forced to work with one screen at the moment. But since I started working "dual screen" on a Matrox card, I never looked back. It's way more fun to have room on the screen. Less mouseclicks also.
Only setback is to get identical screens if you want to upgrade or if one is damaged and you can't get the same display anymore. I fear the days where one of my 16:10 LCD dies - there're only 16:9 available - but they have a higher resolution than my two 22" 1680x1050 ones. So even more space on screen.

i use 1 screen in the bedroom (laptop) and 2 in the studio, i'd use 4 more if i had the money
kx.001 - Sat Apr 09, 2011 10:19 am
how do you have them set up? after following the studio guru videos that IL link to, I don't have enough space between the monitors for monitors. If you see what I mean..

That is, unless you open multiple browsers in each screen so you don't have to hide everything in tabs. I used to only use a single monitor for web-browsing when running dual displays, until I realized how cool it would be to have music folders, skype, and media player opened simultaneously with IE.
I use two 20.1" HP LP2065 screens in a span. I would love to get two more and mount them to the wall above the current two to create a monitor grid. God that would be awesome. I can't imagine ever going back to a single display.
justin3am - Sat Apr 09, 2011 10:23 am
I think my mom only uses one display but I use two.

I have three here...two 22" and one 25" monitor...
Ah_Dziz - Sat Apr 09, 2011 5:22 pm
I only hook up my second monitor for TV and film scoring projects as a dedicated video screen. I would like to get a 40 inch plasma for my main monitor though. my eyes are getting bad.

If you're reading something in one browser it will always be on one side, you will never be able to read anything in your center feild of view.

Yeah, but if it's in a browser, it's likely on the internet, where no one actually reads anything. They just glance at it peripherally before launching into an off topic rant.

Ther's no way a flomelganger can use a browser accurately if several screens are used!!!!!!!

There are ASUS 19" LED monitors for sale locally, $100. Maybe 2 of those......

Kid, I can see now that you are crying out for the mother of all displays:
Don't kid yourself; size matters.
There ain't no substitute fer kewbs (etc, etc)
Dell 30" 2560x1600 pixels
(I don't know how people type emails without at least one.)

I use 2x 32" HD LCDs as monitors. You probably think overkill, but I also work with video; it's great.
I used to use a single 47", but I much prefer the dual setup.

That is a cute little icon - where did it come from? It defaults to vxnas1.gif which I am guessing means "very nasty"
C'mon kid - relax - I was just having a joke about salesmen pushing the customer onto the max size model a la Judge Reinhold playing the speaker salesman in

Enjoy

My thoughts are this for the future (hope its possible)...
To have one main screen at native resolution and a second screen at a lower resolution to make those older crappy small GUI VST's legible. I believe a nice dual output video card could support such a task, no?
Seems like the logical thing for me.

I linked to the relevant scene - parody of a speaker salesman - on youtube in my post. You need to watch the whole 4 minutes to see JRs pitch to a clueless customer for the MX10 (similar designation to US ICBMs of the era). The female customer in the first section looks like Meg Ryan but she has no credit for the it.
hibidy - Mon Apr 11, 2011 11:44 pm
Stores like that haven't existed in a large part since forever, so it's hard for someone to understand. Though the dustbuster scene is probably worth the price of admission
I'd suggest watching it on TWO monitors
hibidy - Mon Apr 11, 2011 11:54 pm
back on topic, one thing that has been frustrating for me in the trying to go 2 monitor era is lack of a reasonable VGA that has 2 DVI outputs. Usually for the fanless ones it's a DVI and a standard old vga
When I built this system there were many fanless choices for two DVI's but oddly enough that didn't work out (can you say sent it back THREE times

) Coincidence? I think not. They had heatsinks the size of buicks and I'm guessing the reason they were so unreliable is they just couldn't keep up.
Still, the 60 buck card I have now has worked well for a long time so I shouldn't bitch too much
egbert - Mon Apr 11, 2011 11:57 pm
I confess I've had a quiet chuckle over the opening scene with the spider - which makes the point right away about how "ruthless" the kidnappers are. Danny and Bette had some fun with the film. It was quite a success 25 years ago and rates 90% positive on Rottentomatoes.

Two X 24 inch LCD monitors.
I have the main monitor in landscape, with the second monitor in portrait to the left of the main monitor. Set up that way my nearfields are either side of both monitors and perfectly positioned so I'm sitting at the apex of the triangle.
I run Reason/Record, so the portrait monitor is just right for the rack and I have the mixer and piano roll on the main monitor. It works very well.
For all the other stuff on my PC like work etc having two monitors is much more efficient than using one monitor. Easy to compare two Word documents or have Access or Excel on one and Word on the other.
I couldn't go back.
