Just woke up.. wow!!! Shocked so many patches, weee!!! Wheeeeeee
hakey - Mon May 23, 2011 6:55 am
As ever thanks to bmrzycki for running this end of the show!

Wow! Great turn out! Have we beaten the record we set with the Bazille contest? It must be close.

EDIT: Just had a quick audition of the patches and there are some *very* nice patches in there. The overall quality of the patches is, IMO, the highest yet for any u-he patch contest!

A close contest I reckon.

Oh, and welcome to all the new faces. Smile

And, for everyone's attention, I've just announced next month's contest. See here:

^ Hmm... yes, I think I'll give that a go.

Hoping that DIVA might have a modelled vintage chorus or two (Juno, Solina,..)?
hakey - Mon May 23, 2011 10:16 am
I notice that someone has subconsciously pinched one of my Synth1 patch names! HiHi Of course, it may just be a coincidence...

Not that I'm bothered either way. I've done it myself, more than once!
The unshushable Coktor - Mon May 23, 2011 11:11 am
Strange, what's my name doing in that list?

I didn't submit any patches, that's for sure. Did someone actually send in one of my older sounds, or what? Gotta look into that...

Laughing really? I was checking out the patches and already had a hunch what might be your entries.

I haven't checked the presets yet but some people might have opened one of your patches to get the VCA:Pan modulation (I think some of your factory patches use it).

Then they somehow forgot to delete your name from the preset data.

Cheers

Found an odd behavior with Tyrell.

do this:
-Select "FX Binar Man"
-Select evey next patch till you reach "HARPSINETTE" and play it.
-In order that Harpsinette to act like it should (polyphonic) you must change to another mode and back again.

I think that the bug is related with the stereo voice structure (VCA1:Pan for exemple, used in "FX Binar Man") and the voice mode.

I'm using Tyrell v. 1.0.1 on WinXP with FL Studio 10.

Same here! In fact, more than a hunch - I would have put money on one of them...

Yep - I've experienced this quite a few times. Changing patches Tyrell occasionally gets stuck in mono mode.

wow, there is some cool stuff in here.

my votes:
5 pts - FX Binar Man
4 pts - Nerve Runners
3 pts - sekvens
2 pts - Digital Scream
1 pts - Pad - 7th wave
3ee - Mon May 23, 2011 12:20 pm
Noted 20 patches as favorites for consideration ... well 22 if you include mine Very Happy
Don't wanna rush with my votes but anyway making a fair decision is gonna be harder than ever!

Didn't expect such great diversity of patches.
I love this synth... it's my fave software synth atm! Smile
I simply can't wait much longer for DIVA!!!

HiHi So DIVA better show up with skins for every synth it will mimic... or else! Cool

I think I must have sent my patches in too late to participate this time. Rats.

Tyrell is a great synth, and I can't wait to go through all the patches and cast my vote.
Cheers to all the participants.

Have you checked the list of patches to see if yours are in there? The Unshushable Coktor is on the list of author's, but says he hasn't submitted a patch, so perhaps the patches bmrzycki has down as TUC's are yours? Confused
bmrzycki - Mon May 23, 2011 1:38 pm
Sorry about the wrong name in the list. For some reason I thought tom lyle was TUC, maybe the patch author name wasn't erased when editing a preset? I'll PM TUC with the names of the presets and he can examine them...

I didn't see any presets from you. It's possible gmail ate them (spam?). I checked my spam folder before posting to be sure but didn't see any in there.

Sorry for the bad luck. Some people PM me and give me a link to a dropbox or box.net account to pull them from. So far I've never lost any of those...
JoeCat - Mon May 23, 2011 1:58 pm
Just gave a quick run-through the submitted patches. I am properly humbled. Kudos to the competition. Thumbs Up!

After the contest, should we create a bank collecting our "third patches" - the ones we almost submitted, but thought "I like it, but doubt anyone else will"? My favorite leftover was an FX patch that my kids love but serves virtually no musical / sound design purpose (that I could think of).

Yeah, good idea! And no need to wait till after the contest... Wink
R.A.W. - Mon May 23, 2011 2:42 pm
nice patches there.. well done, everyone!

it was very hard to find favorites with such a great range of sounds, but at last i chose the ones that i would most likely use in my own tracks.

1. (5 pts) cinematech
2. (4 pts) drone generator 01
3. (3 pts) the lament
4. (2 pts) something moist and plucked
5. (1 pts) wild one

and the patch that didn't make it to my top 5 but needs a honorable mention is "drumloop".. if it wasn't 4-to-the-floor it would be in the list.. but it still is a great idea! Wink

i like the idea, too. but we should wait till after the voting because it might be possible to anticipate the author of sounds in the contest by comparing the "leftover" patches. Wink

No problem. I've got a bit of bad email mojo, I reckon.
The real fun is in creating the patches and seeing how all the participants push these synths in such different directions.

I got like 20 of them and counting!
The.... best patches ever made! Cool

...in fact, some of them are so good that the didn't make it into this contest! HiHi

So yes, I'd say as well, that's best to wait till the voting stage is over.

Having lots of fun playing with these patches! I'm in awe of the great sounds you wizards were able to come up with.

Here's my faves:

1. WakeupMan
2. Echoes in the Dark
3. The Lament
4. PumpinSyncBassStereoPingPongEchoThang
5. Rock Organ
Acronym - Wed May 25, 2011 8:36 am
This is my vote:

5pts - Tyder - For being a tight sound.

4pts - something moist and plucked - Sounds even nicer, when lowering env1 release.

3pts - Rock Organ - realistic.

2pts - Drumloop - I read about this on the SQ8L site, great to that this is also working with Tyrell.

1pts - Digital Scream - Cool Efx.

(made an edit to avoid mistake)
synaesthesia - Wed May 25, 2011 11:41 am
My votes are based on what I feel I would use most myself, so:

1. Nerve Runners (5 pts)
2. Pad 7th Wave (4 pts)
3. Tyder (3 pts)
4. Syncopated (2 pts)
5. Give Your Head a Wobble (1 pt)

A special mention to Digital Scream. Unuseable for me, but highly entertaining sound design.

Cheers,
Matt
rsmus7 - Wed May 25, 2011 12:11 pm
my vote:

1) 5 points = SYN End of the world

2) 4 points = Pad 7th wave

3) 3 points = Glass Impulse

4) 2 points = Echoes in the dark

5) 1 point = Tyder

good luck to everyone,

and thanks for this great contest We're not worthy....
Breeze - Thu May 26, 2011 7:01 am
My 2 cents:

1. Echoes in the Dark
2. Pendula +
3. Phase Diverge
4. Digital Scream
5. Wet Blanket

This was one of the hardest ones to vote for! What a variety!

Notes:

1. I'm not sure I understand why the tally must be displayed as it comes in. Wouldn't it make more sense to reveal the results at the end of the voting period and avoid any influence it might have on the voting?

2. I still find it odd that the criteria for voting is so personal. But hey, it does yield amazing variety!

3. Urs: IMHO you've created the next Synth1 Very Happy This little gem sounds great and offers remarkable flexibility for its "simple" design. Wow! Thumbs Up!

It's not a matter of must, I just do it because it's a lot easier to keep track of the patch votes as they come in. I also find it interesting seeing the tallies over time. Since the votes are public posts to this forum anyone could count them up themselves to see who's winning.

Or are you concerned that people see the leaders and think they have to vote for them too?
DavyAch - Thu May 26, 2011 9:14 am
OK, taken my time over this. I'm afraid my penchant for pads is showing itself here....but it seems I'm not the only one!!

5 points - Pad - 7th Wave (+ external delay / reverb = spine tingle)
4 points - Echoes in the Dark (great movement)
3 Points - Nerve Runners (ditto)
2 Points - Pendula+ (ditto again)
1 Point - FX Binar Man (fun, fun, fun!)

Wish I could add another point for drumloop - very cool, but I would never use it!

I have to say, I am slightly embarassed about the lower quality of my entries compared to this lot...but its nice to be rubbing shoulders with such talent!

bmrzycki wrote:

I think there may be a niggle that those patch authors who are in contention - ie with patches near the top of the leader board - might hang back and vote late and vote strategically.

The only way to absolutely fix that would be secret voting.

Personally I'd prefer to trust that people will simply vote for the patches they like. Maybe, now and again someone has that strategic mindset, but, oh well, life's too short.

Besides, I think watching the tally change over time is somewhat interesting.
hakey - Thu May 26, 2011 9:52 am
If I think I'm in with a shout of winning I try to vote early on, just to avoid any suspicion of tactical shenanigans (and I always vote for the patches I like anyway).

Doesn't look like that will be necessary this time... Crying or Very sad

hakey wrote:

I was thinking the same thing. But even though I'm new here, my feeling is this is probably a real honest group.

IMHO, one advantage to being a later voter is that it's prompted me to listen more to some patches I might have more easily dismissed earlier. I've had about 20 "why didn't I think of that" moments!

Early voters probably have an advantage to being completely objective, and later voters have the advantage of more time, which I suspect balances out. In any case, it's been tons of fun. Very Happy

JoeCat wrote:

I agree. Smile

I suppose there is the other argument, like bmrzycki says, that people are somehow influenced to vote for the patches that have more points - either out of subconscious group think, or just because being near the top makes people pay more attention to those patches.

Anyway, the cure (secret voting) is worse than the disease, IMO. Shrug

LOL! Of course... Now I'm wondering how interesting the sound of a wet blanket must be. Laughing

bmrzycki wrote:

That's possible but I'm sure the group as a whole is on the good side of honest; however influence can be subtle thing. Even without taking any manipulative intent into account, it could still have an unconscious biasing effect on anyone's decisions.

Personally, I try to stay away from the thread while I audition. I listen to the whole lot and eliminate the ones that don't turn me on over a few days, then order the top that remain.

Definitely not sounding as interesting as a wet beaver.

5points-Chirp Bass
4points-SYN End of the World
3points-Lead Mod Selektor
2points-Something Moist and Plucked
1-FX Binar Man

5 points - Pad - 7th Wave

4 Points - Nerve Runners

3 Points - FX Binar Man

2 Points - Pendula+

1 Point - Echoes in the Dark

Nice stuff, I wish I'd had more time to play with Tyrell (and figure out that panning thingie...)

Oh well, at least there's some great patches out there now Cool

STV
pocvecem - Fri May 27, 2011 5:39 am
Oh boy! This was a hard decision! But finally:

1st: Pad - 7th wave (has a bit of Wavestation in it)
2nd: bleach caustics (simple & dirty, highly useful for me)
3rd: Tyrellean Traverse (reminds me of an old Kraftwerk song)
4th: Digital Scream (this is scary! Scared )
5th: FX Binar Man (nice Robotalk)

Btw, really had to laugh when I played bikersgroal. Had something similar on my old Poly800 and even used this sound in a song, hehe.

A lot of great sounds in this contest!
Thumbs Up!
3ee - Fri May 27, 2011 7:57 am
Here's my votes but it wasn't easy to cast them.
There are patches that have a very cool tone but are too simple or static or badly tweaked.

1. Nerve Runners (5p)

2. something moist and plucked (4p)

3. Pendula+ (3p)

4. Wet Beaver (2p)

5. YardCore (1p)

======================================

1. This one is getting on my nerves HiHi
2. Really like this one but IMO it badly needs couple of more tweaks. for exemple the filter keyfollow, env1 keytrack for keyboard balance and env2 velocity for a bit more expressievness.
3. Like the tone, feel and the random expressiveness.
4. Now this is what Tyrell should sound like! Wink Very Happy
5. Ahaaa!... so this is how they are made: ring mod! Like the fact that's tight and it's got me thinking of Arp2600 spring reverb a bit.

Shoutouts in no particular order:

-SYN End of the World
-Echoes in the Dark
-Pad 7th Wave
-machine startup
-Asian Flavor
and more...

Cheers and good luck! Smile
hakey - Fri May 27, 2011 9:59 am
1st...bleach caustics........5pts
2nd...First Preset.............4pts
3rd...Nerve Runners..........3pts
4th...Echoes in The Dark...2pts
5th...Lead - Modselektor...1pts

Sorry I can't give more points. I could easily have included any of the following, all of which made it to my shortlist:

Cello, Digital Scream, FX Binar Man, Pad - 7th Wave , Phase Diverge, PumpinSyncBassStereoPingPongEchoThang, Rock Organ, something moist and plucked, spring marble, The Lament, Tyder.
JoeCat - Fri May 27, 2011 10:43 am
Voting was way tougher than I thought. In the end, I went with what (for me) where the patches I simply enjoyed the most:

1: something moist and plucked (5)
This one just made my fingers happy! Put and amp sim and some verb on it, turn the vibrato up a bit, hit some low notes, and you've got this weird 50's hollow-body-guitar-with-wooden-strings thing going.

2: Cello (4)
Underrated IMHO (and maybe because my daughter is a cellist). But it looks like great care was taken here to make a patch that sounds and plays exactly like it should - love the gentle vibrato on the MW and pressure adding bow pressure. I didn't notice how good this was until I put some verb on (you would never hear a cello without some reflections).

3: Lament (3)
I'm a sucker for dark pads, and this one sounds just right

4: Pad - 7th Wave (2)
Really inventive use of noise. Took a while to notice what was going on - this one is subtle.

5: Glass Impulse (1)
I may use this with a little tweaking in the Tyrell OSC (assuming I finish something on time!), so it has to count

Honorable mention:
PumpSyncBass... - what can't you do with this?
Drumloop and bikersgroal - just plain creative
Echoes In the Dark - for those Floyd tunes.

To all the above: We're not worthy....
Good luck all!

Thumbs Up!

5pt - Phase Diverge
nice modulation with pressure

4pt - bleach caustics
absolutely dreamy lead sound

3pt - something moist and plucked

soft and warm as it must be

perfect for melancholy

Additional shout-out to Digital Scream - just used a tweaked version of it in my Tyrell OSC. Never know what patch is going to come in handy.

Have you heard Zoe Keating? Saw her play a week ago - she has a vintage-looking mic, a footpedal board, and laptop running Live sort of becoming a third element in the human/cello existence ( http://music.zoekeating.com/ ). Use of effects is pretty sparse, I think more or less used to sort of enhance the layering at times, so basically it's cello tone and articulation doing all the work in that regard. It was very compelling!

(Since I'm plugging acts on tangents, also saw http://www.thebatteriesduo.com/ this week - I was actually the whole crowd so I got the free CD ... but the tangent is these guys took sort of the opposite approach with using the tech, something like whack-a-mole with buttons on MIDI controllers, also very compelling)

Votes:

5pts) TranceMachine - Arpeggiator hacks!

4pts) The Lament - Formant hacks!

3pts) FX Binar Man - pretty perfectly realized FX patch

2pts) WakeupMan - Multitimbral hacks!

1pts) Cinematech - There's a seamless blending of pad tones, dissonant tones, and noise that's really lively in this patch

General feeling about this contest was: "ineffable" Adjective
1. Too great or extreme to be expressed or described in words: "ineffable beauty"

I think that's a subtle linguistic evolution of "unf***ngbelievable" Smile

Yeah, my daughter's mentioned her also. Very stylish. Same with the Batteries Duo.
Loopers and such have given solo musicians the opportunity to do their thing without needing the support of pesky accompanists (What's a drummers last words before the band fires him? "Hey, lets do one of my songs!") Smile

What's cool about electronic music is it also gives people who may not have great dexterity and coordination the ability to express themselves musically. Biggest problem now (as evidenced here, for example), is there's too much talent, and not enough time to listen and follow an artist's work.

Can't wait to see the results of the voting (will Urs vote Wink ?) Meanwhile, I will be consumed with my kids, finishing the OSC, and deciding whether to buy the fragile, useless to me, but loads-of-fun Dark Star synth this guy's selling on Craigslist Very Happy

Congrats Breeze ...and all contestants! This was a very cool contest with lots of great patches and thanks to Urs, Brian and Hakey for the obvious...

If anybody learned something during this contest, you can share here! Smile

I learned that using sync with fm cold generate a great variety of tones (including many acoustic ones) + combined with the super "voice" feature, Tyrell is unbeatable... I assume that DIVA will be glorious!

And in case you didn't notice you can use the BP filter mode as a phaser.

I got like 30 patches I've made durring this competition...
Will be posting them here after optimisations. Smile

if you use VCF as one of sources in ring mod with BPF, you can restore considerably low order harmonics even with BPF way up. Actually, ringModFeedback is IMveryHO single greatest feature of TN6 (among bunch of really great features). I have made one cute bass patch with sine osc only, where all of the tone is "tone of filter".

Thanks to Urs, Brian and Hakey. And thanks to Urs one more time. BTW, are Tyrell specs "set in stone" or we can expect some additonal feature here and there.

BTW2 Wet Beaver is homage to Swollen Pickle, Super Hardon and rest of toung-in-cheek pedals. Just like them, Tyrell is a bit esoteric (in market sense), with only features you actually need and (big AND) supreme sounding.
bmrzycki - Mon May 30, 2011 8:21 am
You're all welcome. I'm happy to help out, it means I and everyone else get to hear some pretty incredible presets. I think it also builds a sense of community surrounding the u-he toolchain. Good stuff all around. Smile

Of course, I'd be lying if I wasn't a teensy bit relieved the next patch contest is 5 weeks away. This PC and the Bazille ones were quite a bit of work to tally and organize presets! Smile

Wow! Thanks all! Embarassed

I have to admit that it could have gone many ways, there were more than a few interesting patches. Maybe it was the name Wink

Actually, Nerve Runners was derived from PumpinSyncBass... Fed up with optimizing that preset, I started slowing down the envelopes and introducing random timing. I honestly love that preset (I almost didn't enter it in the contest!). That I was able to create in on a totally free synth is a sign of the times.

BTW, try using the BP instead of the LP/HP for some heavier "rezzing". I preferred the lighter sound myself (more versatile too).

Thanks to Brian and Hakey for their generous legwork, and of course to Urs without whom literally none of this would have been possible. Very Happy

xh3rv - Tue May 31, 2011 5:30 am
Just a suggestion for those submitting - I believe the easiest things to manage are .zip files with your KVR handle and contest info (e.g. xh3rv TPC1), expanding into a folder with the same name containing patches that can be dropped into the main contest folder (i.e. with no author info in them).

This assures no confusion with who voted or who authored a patch, and generally makes life easier for those running the contest, since it's easy to keep two folders - one with folders per author, one that mirrors what the eventual patch set will be.
