Hi,
I have just released an alpha version of my new freeware combo organ plug-in called
Combo Model F. It is modelled after the Farfisa Mini Compact, a transistor organ from the 1960s.
If you would like to give it a try, then you can download the VST or AU from my company website:
http://www.martinic.com/combof/downloads/
Do remember that this is still only an alpha version, so not all features have been fully implemented (namely: Extended Bass [added in v0.8.3]), and others may not be functioning 100% as intended (Multi-Tone Booster round voice seems way too weak [fixed in v0.8.2]). Nevertheless, should you run into any problems with "ComboF", then please let me know, so I can fix things in the next version. Meanwhile, have fun with it!
Funkybot's Evil Twin - Tue Aug 02, 2011 2:32 pm
I was actually looking at my Farfisa VIP 255 the other day (the electronics need work) and thought about what became of this plugin. I checked out the site and still no update, so I figured maybe it wasn't happening.
So I'm THRILLED to see a beta! Thank you very much. You have the best Vox Continental organ around IMO.
bmot - Tue Aug 02, 2011 2:42 pm
nice one! thanks for the work you put in and for making this available
Edit: I still don't know why this and the Model V are freeware, but good on you for giving so much to the music community
Tale - Tue Aug 02, 2011 3:16 pm
You are welcome.
I have just found a bug myself:

When I load the VST in REAPER on my MacBook Pro, then initially the organ makes no sound (except for some very faint background noise). If I then click on any one of the 3 white tabs, I do get sound, and from then on everything seems to work fine.
MRT - Tue Aug 02, 2011 3:59 pm
Hello and thank you for another fine emulation. I have no idea if Model F sounds like a Farfisa, but I like the sound. I also experienced some wierdness on startup, but after going into the setting all seems fine.
If i could make a wish for your organs(F and V). I love the ability to adjust the tuning in the settings view, to me(a slight detuning)really makes these come alive and sound much more natural to my ears. I would really like to be able to change patches without losing the tuning. Or possibly store and load tunings seperate from the patch. ?
vic_france - Tue Aug 02, 2011 4:07 pm
I echo the previous comments of praise and thanks
All working as expected here in Cubase 6 Mac (apart from the already-mentioned "kickstart" to get it going

).
cosmosis - Tue Aug 02, 2011 4:28 pm
Yes! I'm still hooked on your Model V, so this is very good news for me.

i really love your other organ and am downloading this one right now (while I feel guilty about having no extra cash to donate). thanks so much.
A.M. Gold - Tue Aug 02, 2011 9:57 pm
Thanks so much for this generous offer (and for your other organ).
darsho - Tue Aug 02, 2011 11:47 pm
thank you for this one !

Thank you so much for these excellent instruments! Donation just sent…
Like the V, the F AU loads without problems in DP 7, which can sometimes be finicky (witness the problems with VB3, for instance…).
Thanks again!

I guess I could add another toggle switch that locks the tuning.

I just realized that you can alt-click and drag to do random tuning! Way Cool! Thats pretty much what I was requesting, so your way ahead of me.
I do like the idea of a lock switch.
Thanks again for your efforts on these!

Yeah, the new ComboV features have also found their way into ComboF. You can also do Shift-drag to move all tuning slides at once.
MRT wrote:

I think it would be nice to be able to lock the tunings in live situations, especially if you have just tuned the organ to an acoustic setup.

Thank you!
I will try it tonight.
Model V is one of my fav organ, I am looking forward to try this one.

This is going to sound really preachy, so apologies in advance!

If you haven't yet got round to donating and enjoy the Model V and new Model F, you should think about giving a donation to thank him for these instruments. Just go to

Amen!
I have fixed the bug that caused ComboF to not make any sound after loading, so
v0.8.1 alpha is online now.
dickiefunk - Fri Aug 05, 2011 11:33 pm
Wow thanks for your hard work and time making these great plugins! Looking forward to checking this one out!

Thank you Martinic for this nice instrument.
Tale - Sun Aug 07, 2011 12:37 pm
You are welcome.
I have just uploaded
v0.8.2 alpha:
- Corrected Multi-Tone/All Booster levels
- Tweaked noise, chatter and mains hum
- Added lock tuning, so tuning persists when changing presets
- Double-click instead of single-click on top to open settings window
- Minor tweaks (footage labels, slider values position)

Forgot to say it earlier but this newest version sounds great. Another phenomenal combo organ plugin. Thanks!

just did a track with and it sounds great. fit's into a mix easily with a lot of other instruments, and sounds phenomenal by itself. I'll try out the update. thanks a bunch.
Tale - Mon Aug 15, 2011 12:10 am
You are welcome.
I am working on the extend bass now, which will extend the bass from one to two octaves (just like on the more advanced Farfisas), so I will post another update probably somewhere this week.
pwal - Mon Aug 15, 2011 1:12 am
great stuff thanks!
Tale - Sun Aug 21, 2011 10:16 am
You are welcome.
I have just released
v0.8.3 alpha:
- Implemented extended bass (like on the Combo Deluxe Compact)
- Louder bass voice
- Added auto adjust volume parameter which "boosts" softer voices (Dolce and Principale)
- Added noise gate parameter, so noise gate can be switched off
- Remodelled vibrato
- Show/edit vibrato speed adjust in Hz
- Added smoothing filter to knee lever and volume pedal
- Fixed excessive pops/clicks when switching voices
- Added MIDI Program Change support
- [Mac OS X] DMG installers
EDIT: I have just uploaded a audio sample of Combo Model F called
Farfisa Blues in C. The first time around you get an almost Hammond-like sound, the 2nd time around you get the typical Farfisa sound.
Tale - Sat Sep 03, 2011 10:59 am
I have just released Combo Model F
v0.9.0 beta. Changes:
- PDF documentation
- Click on toggle switch label to toggle
I have also uploaded a
new audio demo featuring Combo Model F.

Congrats! You've made a great instrument! (and 1st farfisa organ emulator available [as far i know]). I've tried your farfisa emulator - it sounds really good! Plenty of character, i like it. So to the point:
I thought about binding pitch-wheel to vibrato speed. It makes perfect sense to me as vibrato on/off is modulation wheel, vibrato speed might as well be nearby. However it is impossible in current version. I'm using Axiom 49, and i've tried many organs, I even sampled combo-organs myself. I think this option would be cool.
Now i think you should add sustain option (standard cc#64). I've already written some songs involving sustain switch, so i could free my hands for another keyboard (I talk about live playing here, in recording all this doesn't matter as you could just write automation), and it would be a shame to give up such a nice instrument in favor of the mediocre one with sustain option.
And just to dream a little bit: I've been looking for someone to make transistor-sounding piano. Rock-si-chord sound was pretty good, but as a kontakt library it ate ridiculous amount of cpu power (which i better dedicate to lower latency than to sample library). Anyway you could just use your Farfisa organ engine to make Farfisa Professional Piano.
Here Ralf Hutter plays beautiful farfisa pro piano. I love the sound (and can't nail it using any vst i've tried). It is said that pro piano also uses velocity sensitive keyboard! This sparkling sound is very rare (and beautiful), I must say.

Thanks,
I used your Vox emu in a track the other day that required a The Doors organ type sound and your emu of the Vox organ fitted perfectly.
Great plugin,
Will download this new one and make a donation.
Thankyou.

I have just updated Combo Model F to
v0.9.1 beta:
- Added sustain pedal support
- Added round tones to treble voices
- [Windows] Smaller installers
- [Mac OS X AU] Fixed various memory leaks
If you are using the 64-bit AU version, then could you please report back whether this build works for you, and what version of Mac OS X you are running? Thanks!

Always grateful for these updates
Could you elaborate on the intended use of the plugins' own MIDI Out, please? Here, in Cubase 6, having routed a MIDI track to ComboF (or V), I can open a 2nd MIDI track (routed to any other VSTi or external synth), with that track's input set from the Combo's MIDI output, and it will indeed duplicate anything I send to the Combo... but (unless I'm missing something very obvious)... what is the intended purpose of that, please? It isn't transmitting anything from the Combo's GUI, so it is, effectively, just acting as a MIDI thru.
mrblitz - Thu Oct 20, 2011 3:35 pm
There's a video on youtube, with one of the guys from Hall and Oates, jamming with Manzarek and Krieger, and the opening shot is of Manzarek's 'Connie Vox.' I guess that's neither here nor there really, but your plug-ins always seem to remind me of Manzarek; and Manzarek reminds me of these plug-ins.
Great stuff! These 2 plug-ins (ComboV/ComboF) are excellent... thanks for the update...

Yes, it indeed is just MIDI thru. In some hosts (e.g. REAPER) this makes it easier to layer multiple VST instruments.

I have just released Combo Model F
v1.0.0 RC1:
- Added sustain and pitch bend enable/disable buttons (both are disabled by default)
- Panic button now resets sustain pedal (and pitch wheel)
- Fixed MIDI learning invalid CC MSB/LSB combinations
- [Mac OS X] Fixed 32-bits Carbon view in 64-bits AU
- [Windows] Fixed text input for automated controls
- Updated to latest WDL/IPlug framework

I like the way you have implemented pitch bend and that the control returns to it's original setting. Very nice update.
Anyone have any recommendation's for emulating a vintage signal chain for these organs. Was it customary to run them through a guitar combo amp?

Yeah, a guitar amp like the Vox AC30, or a bass amp for a little more low end.

I dragged a 90lb Farfisa Compact Deluxe all over the midwest for two years in the early 2000's and kinda wish I'd had these back then. Though I gotta say, I do miss the ghostly reverb'd hum it made as it was warming up. Maybe that will turn up in a future release
Anyhow I always played mine through either a Ampeg Gemini II combo amp, or a Fender Bassman (silver face) through a Sonic 4x12 cabinet. Tube amp is the only way to go with a Farfisa. Never used a Vox, but I imagine the same applies.
I like to run Combo V/F through Fuzz Plus or TAL Tube for a bit of extra meat.

v1.0.1 beta1:
- Added 20 factory presets
(BTW, if anyone has any presets he/she wants to share, then please let me know, and I will include them.)
- Automatically show settings window after loading plug-in
- Fixed recording duplicate notes in Mixcraft
- Updated to latest WDL/IPlug framework

I absolutely love this Combo Model F and the Combo Model V. I own a Farfisa Fast 5, a Nord Stage, and NI Vintage Organs. Combo Model F is my go-to now!
Please, please, please tackle the Gibson G101 next! Aside for some out of tune sample sets, no one has tackled this as a modeled plug-in. I bet you could charge a fair price for one and make a lot of people happy. Just look at what they're going for on ebay!

I have just released
v1.0.1 RC1:
- Fixed settings window not being restored to closed state when loading project/preset/bank
- Added more factory presets
- Updated documentation
Tale - Fri Jan 27, 2012 11:20 am
I have released
Combo Model F v1.0.1. There weren't any further changes since v1.0.1 RC1, but here is the "official" changelog since the previous stable version (v1.0.0):
- Automatically show settings window after loading plug-in
- Added 32 factory presets
- Fixed recording duplicate notes in Mixcraft
BTW, does anyone happen to own a real Mini (Deluxe) Compact? For the next version I have partly remodelled the voice filters in an effort to improve the overall sound. I could really use some samples of a real Mini to compare the remodelled sound with. If anyone is interested, then
please let me know. Thanks!

- [AU] Fixed crash in Studio One v2.0.4 when bypassing plug-in (should also be fixed in Studio One v2.0.5)
- [Mac OS X] Added Intel 64-bit VST support

Hi,
I have a problem with this one, but I think it is complicated to locate, because it only occurs in combination with another plugin, so I don't know which is the faulty one.
When I use the ComboF together with the Fx Version of vb3 as lesliesimulation (great sound these 2 together) in Nuendo and want to save the project, saving lasts very long and I can hear a clicking noise through the speakers. Every save lasts longer, up to 15-20 seconds. Also I can not load for example TruePianos as VST on another track. As soon as I remove either ComboV or the vb3fx, the project saves without problems in 1 second and I can load TruePianos again.
I am on Windows XP SP3 32bit and have an Intel Core2quad.
It would be fantastic if this problem could be located as I have to render my organ tracks and remove the vsti or vst.
Cheers
Alex

I have just tried to replicate this issue in REAPER, loading ComboV or ComboF, and VB3fx (demo), and then saving the project, and everything seems to work just fine here. Unfortunately I don't have Nuendo here to test things with.
What versions of Nuendo, ComboV, ComboF, and VB3 are you running?
I don't know if Nuendo can export VST presets? It would be interesting to know if you can save a single ComboF preset (preferrably in a FXP or FXB file) from within a misbehaving ComboF/VB3 combination project. Perhaps I can then analyse this preset file, and see if there is anything wrong with it.

Hi,
thank you very much. With your question about the versions you helped me a lot. It seems it was the vb3s fault. When version 1.4 came out I only updated the vsti version but the vb3fx was still 1.3 I have updatet this now to 1.4 and everything works as it should.
Thank you very much again for the two best vst organs (with vb3 short behind)

I have started working on renewing Combo Model F's GUI. The new plan is to have three views:
1. Organ
2. Settings
3. Tuning
In the organ view you will get the organ, with only a few tiny tabs, and the on-screen keyboard below it (just as it is now). In the Settings view you will get large tabs and (non-tuning) sliders, but the on-screen keyboard is no longer visible (so you will have to switch back to the Organ view to sample notes through the on-screen keyboard). In the Tuning view you will get the large tabs and the tuning sliders. A new instance of the plug-in will load up in the Settings view (just as it is now).
Here are some screenshots to give you a better idea of what I am talking about:
Organ view
Settings view
Tuning view

These organs are so superb that it seems unreasonable to ask for more.
However, one feature I'd love to have is MIDI learn on the main controls. It would be great to use, for instance, the Korg Kontrol 2 for drawbars and assign a pedal to vibrato on/off…

Well, both ComboF and ComboV already have MIDI learn for the main controls. Is there anythig you would like to do but you can't do with the current MIDI learn options?

That's what I get for not reading the manual carefully…
I just assumed MIDI learn would work like it does in, for example, VB3 and Kontakt 4, where you right-click on a control and get a contextual menu.
Sorry for wasting your time!
Best,
Joachim

You haven't.
Meanwhile I have updated ComboF to
v1.1.0 beta3:
- Moved help button to bottom right corner
- Better indication of which knob/tab/slider is selected for MIDI learn
(instead of displaying its name, the selected control is highlighted)
- Merged MIDI map load/save/clear with MIDI learn toggle switch

I know it has been a while, but I have just uploaded Combo Model F
v1.1.0 beta4.
The main change in this version if that I have greatly improved the accuracy of ComboF's sound after A/B comparing it with a recording from a real Mini Compact.
Changes:
- Improved voice filters (brighter, more raucous)
- Added feedback to tone generator outputs
- Added preamp filter stage
- Extended vibrato speed range
- Tweaked vibrato depth, which now defaults to light
- More authentic noise (mains hum, pink/white noise, chatter)
- Added auto volume for All Booster voice
- Added warning when loading project/preset from older version
- Tweaked presets
- Selecting a tab for MIDI learn no longer changes its value
- Renewed MIDI map load/save/clear buttons
- Full changelog...

Yay! Thank you for the new Combo Model F v1.1.0 beta4.
Another small donation sent. You deserve lots of donations, because these are very, very fine organ VST Instruments.

Excellent update.. sounds superb (but it already did!

). Thanks so much!

Just want to add my thanks here as well. I love these two organ plugins!

Thanks!

Thank you so much for these fantastic instruments! I still don't understand why they're not commercial. However, I donated again the minute I read about the Combo F upgrade!
Best,
Joachim

I have uploaded an audio sample of Combo Model F vs a real Farisa Mini Compact:

IMHO ComboF sounds pretty close. It doesn't fix my sloppy keyboard playing though...

Well, actually I'm not sure if it's fixable... garbage in, garbage out, right?

been playing with v1.1.0 beta4 all night, LOVE IT! this is the best organ sound i ever heard coming out my computer!
try adding NastyDLA mkII with just a little feedback/distortion up and tape style delay!

holy shit!!!!!!!
i have an important question for the genius who wrote this, what sample rate do your recommend for the best sound quality?
it seems to sound a bit better at 96k, more alive/detailed maybe, but that might be a trick of hearing as it sounds a little brighter as well. i am assuming that 96k is going to be better, but maybe it is not tuned to work at that rate and the extra brightness is not authentic? can't find any mention in the manual.
would be great to release this as a final version asap, can't find any problems, i never would have found this beta if it were not for the forum post pointing to it.
THANKS for your generosity to give this away

Combo Model F (and V) are not designed with any specific sample rate in mind, so generally speaking: the higher, the better.

The wavefoms ComboF generates are anti-aliased, and the sample rate will influence the anti-alias filter, so it will sound slightly different at different sample rates. However, the difference should be very, very subtle.

Will do, although first I will have to bring the documentation up to speed with the latest changes.

I have uploaded a new beta (
v1.1.0 beta5) with one change:
- Load/save tuning from/to Scala scale (.scl) files
Mutant - Fri Nov 16, 2012 2:51 am
thermal - Fri Nov 16, 2012 4:55 am
it could be interesting for someone to use a tool like REATUNE in reaper to accurately measure the exact (original analog inaccurate) tuning of the original instrument and make it into a .scl file
still loving this instrument, and after playing about for ages i can confirm it sounds best at 96k

please don't change a thing about the sound!
could any organ lovers identify the sound that the italian group The Goblin use back in the 70's?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=krVgrkZBzcE
at 1.36, also from 2 mins on with Roller album cover on stage. this is the organ of the gods

Well, this should closely match the real Farfisa Mini Deluxe that was used as a reference when improving ComboF's sound:
! mini_compact_deluxe.scl
Martinic Combo Model F, 1/1=65.34870 Hz
12
100.06309
198.22797
298.43485
397.69147
501.97894
603.42089
704.33950
797.96338
904.24864
1000.07403
1097.82327
2/1
Note that the original also had 12 tuning slugs that had to be tuned by hand/ear, so no two organs would be tuned exactly the same.
EDIT: Note also that in neutral tuning (0.0) ComboF isn't perfectly 12-TET A4=440 Hz tuned. (If you want that, then Alt-click on the tuning Reset button.)

Will do... er... won't do? Meh, you know what I mean.
