Jakob / Cableguys - Mon Dec 12, 2011 11:23 am

Curve 2 is in the making, taking its preset sharing steps further and adding more creative sound features.

We believe that the Curve community is an essential aspect of Curve, and we're excited to hear your feedback and feature wishes!

Edit: Curve 2 public beta is up now!
Find out more: http://www.cableguys.de/curve-2.html

Edit: Preset contest up now!
We just started a contest to find the best preset sounds.
There's a lot of prices in the pot for the top-50 presets. And we'll pick our absolute favorite preset: Its creator gets all plugins we ever do, now and in the future, for free!
Find out more: http://www.cableguys.de/preset-contest.html

The preset contest ends September 1st.

If you purchase Curve 1 or the Cableguys Bundle now, you'll get the upgrade to Curve 2 for free!

Fantastic! Just got the news about the Unison and Flexible Envelopes!(now a decay should not be the problem anymore) I think it will be an instant buy. The interface looks really cool now.
Nielzie - Mon Dec 12, 2011 12:13 pm
Ahh yes.. Fantastic! Really looking forward to it! Well Done

New GUI looks indeed very sexy Love
Ingonator - Mon Dec 12, 2011 12:15 pm
Cool. Currenly i'm working on other projects but i'll try to do more Curve presets as soon as possible.

Glad you like the layout! It's quite a change in the colors, so we're very curious to hear your thoughts!

It looks cool. Can you post a full screenshot yet?

hebb wrote:

We thought it might be even more interesting with hiding some stuff..

(.. but the real reason is that some of the stuff is still in the works, for example the modulation matrix just got even more massive and might see some restructuring soon.)

It looks like raptor on the screen.. Black...
WolfKay - Mon Dec 12, 2011 4:56 pm
Well, now these *are* great news indeed, Jakob!
Curve 1 was already great, but now, wow... Shocked
And yes, don't hesitate to add more and more creative sound features, please!

I'm pretty busy right now and I wish I had the time to finish the presets I promised you a while ago with the little help from Plogue Bidule Wink
BTW, will the presets from Curve 1 be entirely compatible with those from Curve 2?

Thumbs up for this great work, Jakob, I can't wait to hear and see the results Well Done
So, good luck for the completion of your software!
Good times are coming Cool

Aaaargghhh...Aaaargghhh...D'oh!...Help..Love....Cool

I loved the first version, but I felt $160 is a bit steep...BUT the new colors!! Love and the coming features? $160 ? YES!! I'll be buying this year! Look forward to the beta testing, thanks guys!

This could be a great tool for creating wave shapes for use in granular synths. hmmm Idea Yup, I'll be buying curve this year Very Happy

WolfKay wrote:

You'll be able to open Curve 1 presets with Curve 2, although they might sound slightly different (but we try to have them sound as close as possible). If in doubt, you can always install Curve 1 and 2 in parallel. You won't be able to open Curve 2 presets with Curve 1.

Yeah, chances are this is exactly what we'll add during beta. Let's see.

I should add: We continue with our public wish list, so we'll continue to check priorities there. You can enter your wishes here, and you can vote on wishes (no need to log in for voting).

I guess we'll go with an upgrade price for existing users, but with a decent one. And there'll be again a preset competition with the chance to win Curve 2 and coupon codes.

I'm okay with a decent fee.

ok, there are developers who choose rewarding the customer base over the "allure-a-new-customer" approach, but then, it's your business model, not mine, so I ain't complaining Wink

gaaaaaaa, I feel the "I want it all, for free and RIGHT NOW" attitude slowly taking control of me, so pardon me... Laughing

Yeah, I'm big fan of the reward-the-loyal-developers approach. Kidding, the upgrade price will be very modest.

Yes, that's the plan. First will be VolumeShaper 3(!), to be published very soon, with some exiting new stuff on board.

We plan to have a similar color scheme with all of them, but maybe with different highlight colors. So Curve got orange, VolumeShaper might get a tone of green etc.

Customers who purchase VolumeShaper 2 now or just purchased recently will get the upgrade to version 3 for free.

We do not know yet about older customers; chances are that the upgrade will be free or only something like 5 EUR, max. 10 EUR.

Yeah! Actually the only reason we haven't done this yet is that we were so busy developing. Answering support mails also takes big parts of our time by now, we'll soon go search for hiring someone for helping us here.

So first we'll start with a preset contest during beta, and track contest too at some point.

Cool, always curious to hear your presets.

I think for you - as it seems you like to describe the sounds you make - it will be especially interesting that you can provide descriptions for your presets with Curve 2. And you can edit your author text and web links. So if there's something going on, you can edit your text, and all Curve 2 users see the new text the next time they click "Sync" within Curve.

hello jakob,

I had a blast beta testing the curve 1 and making some presets for it. is the beta for curve 2 open ?? should I simple email you ?! wanna try it as soon as possible Smile

thnx for your nice work man.
Jakob / Cableguys - Thu Feb 02, 2012 12:36 pm
Thanks arbee! Still a bit more work to do until beta starts. It'll run a public beta, and we'd certainly love to have some of your presets in! Hope that Steffen does not spend too much time playing with them again, though..

We'll send a newsletter when beta starts (you can join the newsletter at http://www.cableguys.de).

Curve 2 public beta will be released within the next 20 hours!
Jakob / Cableguys - Fri Mar 30, 2012 3:11 am
Curve 2 public beta is up now! Download it here:
http://www.cableguys.de/curve-2.html

32- and 64-bit, VST and RTAS, for Windows XP/Vista/7 (Mac OS X and AU support coming soon).

Known issues:

- This first beta ships with almost no presets.
- MIDI mapping is not finished yet. We'll add it in a later beta.
- Unisono menu shows a full list of choices. We'd like to discuss to reduce the choices.
- Preset history is new and has not been tested with many users yet. This feature might undergo major changes during beta.
- We'll do more tweaks for the layout, including changes to the knobs.
- Changing the length of an envelope phase will only change the sound on the next note. We consider to also changes notes that are currently played.
- Curve uses lots of RAM (about 130 MB at the moment), which will be reduced in a later beta.
- Curve uses lots of CPU. We'll do more CPU optimizations.
- We'll add more help texts.

We might fine-tune existing features and add more features during beta. You can help us here: Simply vote for features or add your own feature wishes on our public feature wish list, or discuss here.

Glad you like it! Hope you'll like the features too, pretty much happened here.

Also, I should add: Don't hesitate to upload presets, play with it, try stuff, get it to its limits, take presets from others and improve them (the new history feature will make sure that the original author is still shown).

The new interface is beautiful.

If I had one desire it would be for mouse-wheel support.

Wow finally it's in the open Smile I know how busy you have been lately with this. Congratulations guys!

I will download it tonight and am very excited to try out the new features and enhancements over this weekend hyper

And I hope many more KVR people will give Curve 2 Beta a good test run on their systems and report all bugs they find, so that Jakob and Steffen can optimize this baby to the fullest.

Curve is a community driven synth, so the more people onboard the better anyways, hehe. I'm hoping for many more great new presets so don't be shy to upload Smile

Not tested yet (and i just noticed that it's not available yet for macos), but jakob, could you write us a short text about what's new in curve 2 (other than the obvious new interface Very Happy ).
I saw your issues list, but nothing about what's really new or improved, and I can't see on the screenshot ..

hum after comparing..
- OSCs Crossfades
- Enveloppes drawing modes
- Some modifications in mod matrix

Did I miss something else?

You've already spotted some part of it:

- Drawable envelopes (better than LFOs sometimes -- they behave like playable envelopes)
- Two waveforms per OSC (with crossfade -- try modulating this!)
- Unison mode
- Version history for presets
- Author description
- New layout
- Coming soon: Preset description and MIDI assignment

Since version 1.0 also mono mode, legato and glide, individual OSC modulation, modulation of LFO rates, one-shot LFOs, 64bit-versions, RTAS support and more got added.

You can find all the details here: http://www.cableguys.de/curve-2.html

Any chance we could have a manual for Curve?

Amazing synth btw Smile
Ingonator - Sat Mar 31, 2012 3:07 am
Hi Jakob,

congratulations for the new beta. Niels already asked/told me about it in a PM.

I liked version 1 very much and had made a few presets for it. I have also used some samples and waveforms based on Curve in my soundbank for Waldorf PPG Wave 3.V which was released a few weeks ago. Of course i have mentioned Curve in the manual for the bank.

I just downloaded the public beta now and will have a look as soon as possible.

Currently i am working on some presets (or a bank) for Waldorf Largo and also for Synthmaster 2.5.

Hi Jakob,

I downloaded the file after you wrote this, yet it says Beta1, is that right?

I'm asking because I can't seem to synchronize presets atm. First time sync went allright. Then made a preset and tried to sync, but I get the error "something went wrong, please try again" every time now.

Anyone else having sync difficulties atm?

I'm having a blast with the new drawable envelopes, the crossfading wave oscs and the awesome Unison mode though Love

Hi Niels,

i have just started checking the Curve 2 public beta too. For syncing i first had to register my email address again as my Curve 1 license does not work for Curve 2. When starting the Sync itt stop after a short time with the message: "SQL Error: column name is not unique".

The new features like e.g. envelopes, Wave crossfading and Unison seem to be a nice addition. The new GUI looks great too and it's also nice to have more available points for the waveforms whch was a problem in earlier versions of version 1.

I still miss a feature to use the aftertouch for adding vibrato. Something like "Aftertouch*LFO1" in the mod matrix (like in e.g. Waldorf Largo) seems to be necessary for this.

Hi Ingo Smile

Yes, I did register and confirm my email address again in order to sync the preset browser. First time sync went without a problem too. But after that and now still it doesn't work here. I suspect a server issue. Your SQL error message is pointing in that direction too I think.

Jakob is on hollidays as of today I think, but he said he would bring his laptop with him, so he probably can have a look at this when he's able to. I also noticed that in this version it isn't possible to delete a self made preset from the browser (only in full version). Too bad, because I accidently submitted the same patch twice Embarassed

Anyway, good to see that you are participating in the beta, despite that your already so busy with other projects Very Happy

"Aftertouch*LFO1" in the mod matrix is indeed an interesting idea!
Ingonator - Sat Mar 31, 2012 11:52 am
Nielzie wrote:

Should be quite obvious i guess. I just need a way to add vibrato with aftertouch to e.g. lead sounds or some pad sounds. I do this in most of the presets i did for other synths. In the current mod matrix you only either assign Aftertouch to the LFO Speed or to the Pitch.

I guess i already mentioned this for version 1.

BTW the ARP Pro Soloist already used the same feature around 1970... Wink

I'm not sure if it's already officially requested here on their uservoice forum, but if you or perhaps Jakob where adding it (or leading me to it) there I'd be more than happy to vote for this feature Smile

Hey all! Sorry for only chiming in now.. had to take bit of a rest after lots of work before the Curve beta launch. Now enjoying 10 days of holidays -- but still with the laptop and pretty amazed at nice presets and - ho - lots of sales of VolumeShaper 3.

If you buy Curve or the Cableguys Bundle now, you'll get the upgrade to Curve 2 for free, for the price of Curve 1. There will not be any intro offer on Curve 2 (you might win Curve 2 and even lifetime-free-upgrades with an upcoming preset contest, though, but we'll compensate any winners who already own Curve).

Anyway, back to work, will answer all of your posts in a minute.

Thanks Nielzie for letting us know!

I've just looked into the database and what happened is this: You've saved a preset and changed its name to be empty afterwards (which will not be possible with the next beta any more). Then when uploading, the preset was not correctly added to the database, as we've defined that all presets need a name.

I've removed your preset from the database again. Please give all your presets a name and sync the database again; that should work now. Pretty happy over here.. finding and fixing bugs is always a great thing.

Hi Jakob,

Hope you're doing fine there on vacation Cool

It was actually on purpose that I changed the name of that preset to be empty. I wanted to try if it would be possible (which shouldn't be of course). I changed the name back afterwards and synced again, but then I still wasn't able to sync, so I wasn't sure anymore if the empty name field was to blame Smile

I changed the name back afterwards and synced again, but then I still wasn't able to sync, so I wasn't sure anymore if the empty name field was to blame Smile

That's what makes a great beta tester! The next beta will not allow any empty input any more, happy you found that one!

That looks like a great place to be indeed! Greece or Turkey perhaps?

Were you also able to find out yet what was wrong with Ingo's syncing issue?

Hi Niels,

when i hit on "Sync database" it loads (or loaded) around 46 presets including a few of your new ones and then i get that message above. Is 46 the overall number of presets for the Curve 2 Beta now?

Hey Ingo, yes atm there are 46 presets all together in the database so it looks like the sync went through ok for you. But strange that you still get that SQL message.. Confused

Hey Ingo, your issue sounds like an issue we had in the very beginning. Can you download Curve 2 beta again here:

http://www.cableguys.de/downloads/Cableguys-Curve2-Beta.zip?v=3

If the issue is still there, drop me a pm, got another idea for that too.

Hi Jakob,

with that version the Error message does not appear. Thank for that. Smile

Those graphical envelopes seem to be a great idea. I love the adjustable slopes in Synthmaster 2.5 and this is quite similar or even more advanced as it is more flexible.

BTW it would be great if you could modulate the Corossfading by e.g. an envelope or the LFO. Is the "Mix" parameter in the mod matrix used for this?

Another feature which i already requested in this thread is that you could rooute the Aftertouch to the LFO amount so you could use the Aftertouch to add vibrato. This would be something like "Aftertouch*LFO". It would be enough for me if it works with only one of the LFOs, like e.g. "Aftertouch*LFO1" (or shorter: "AT*LFO1").

UPDATE:
My request for Aftertouch LFO modulation seems to fit to this request:
http://cableguys.uservoice.com/forums/84071-curve/suggestions/1182997-lfo-amount-as-mod-destination

Looks like the "Mix" parameter could be used for modulation of the Crossfade. With using a Pulse and a Square waveform (or two different pulses) it could be possible to do PWM this way. Nice!

Glad you like them!

Exactly. Which points out that I should give them the same name, both "Mix" ("Crossfade" is to long for the modulation matrix). Modulating this parameter is great for evolving pads for changing their timbre, but also for rhythmic sounds.

Yes, and I've just set it to "planned". We'll do that pretty soon. I guess we could easily do it more generally, to just have a new modulation target "LFO amount" for LFO 1+2, and allowing all modulation sources (aftertouch, modwheel, velocity, keytrack, LFO3+4, EG1+2) to be routed to that.

Guess it's still a bit different. But maybe you can upload a test preset for this? Would be great!

Hi Jakob,

i just uploaded a preset called "PWM Strings 1" which uses 2 different Pulse waveforms (Wide and Narrow) for an emulation of PWM.
A second preset called "Vox-Saw LFO Morph Pad" morphs between a Vox like waveform and a Sawtooth using a custom LFO waveform.

Hello,

Sadly, I haven't tried the curve 2 beta yet. I had a few deadlines with my studio works and it took most of my time. I now see things slowing down so I'll be able to try it sometimes soon.

I have a question though. Will this new curve "take the place" of the old curve version 1? I'm asking this because I have a few tracks still in progress that are using curve 1 and I don't want to have any problem.

Will my current tracks using curve 1 still remain the same if I download the new curve beta ?! and as a general question, when the curve 2 will be released, will curve still exist in my plugin list ??

Thanks
arbee

Hi Jakob,

when Niels ("Nielzie") asked me about the public beta i told i have not much time but yesterday i already added 8 presets to the database and i guess there will be some more soon. Seems like it's hard to resist Curve, no matter if it's version 1 or 2. Resistance is futile Resistance is futile Resistance is futile

@Arbee (post above): Yes you could use both Curve 1 and 2 at once.
The license file for Curve 1 does not work with Curve 2.

What about users/customers that already got Curve 1. Will they get a Curve 2 license for free as soon as the Beta is over or do they have to pay an upgrade price?

Indeed, Curve 1 and Curve 2 can be used in parallel.

Everyone who purchases Curve 1 or the Cableguys Bundle now, and everyone who has pirchased it after the Curve 2 announcement (Dec 12, 2011) will get the upgrade to Curve 2 for free. All others will have to pay an upgrade price (or win an upgrade in the preset contest).

Amazing synth btw Smile

Glad you like Curve 2!

Instead of a manual we believe it's much better to have our help texts within the plugin. Also check our FAQ page. But if you think there's stuff that needs to be covered in a manual, you can vote for it in Curve's public wish list (no need to log in for voting).

Didn't find any bugs yet, so that's a good thing. But the cpu is quite high still so further optimizations would be really appreciated Smile Especially the Unison mode seems to eat a lot of cpu (but is a wonderFULL addition!)

Midi Learn will be very welcome here too Very Happy

Looks like I'm going to fught for the chance to win the upgrade. Will join the deadly preset contest. Must. Be. Strong.

Glad you like the Unison mode! And yes, there's quite a bit that we'll do on CPU optimization.

Also adding MIDI learn. First thing we are working on right now is modulation of LFO amount (I must admit that this is quite a basic feature that was still missing).

Beta 2 is up now! Download it here: http://www.cableguys.de/curve-2.html

Beta 2 fixes an issue when wave crossfade was modulated while playing unisono voices and it brings some GUI tweaks and small fixes. The bigger updates (modulation of LFO amount, MIDI mapping, ..) are yet to come.

Just noticed that the Beta1 was timed out, didn't look at and skipped the welcome screen so after that I was puzzeled why there wasn't any sound.. Embarassed HiHi

I have now Beta2 installed though Thumbs Up!

One more thing.. It's been twice already that I accidentely synced presets too early while my preset wasn't completely finnished yet. But after that I'm unable to remove the preset myself.

Would it perhaps be an option to be able to remove your own preset from the online browser, only within a few hours or so after uploading, to be able to undo such little "accidents"?

I agree - you should have complete control over your presets and should be able to remove them even after they are shared with the community. The problem I see is, that someone already got your preset, likes and uses it - for this user the preset should not disappear I guess. A solution would be: If you delete a preset after uploading (or set it to private), everyone who already got it will keep it, and everyone else will never see it. What do you think?

Hi Jakob,

i just installed the new update and synced the presets. I'll have a look at it ASAP. I am currently working on presets for Saurus but hopefully will find more time for the Curve 2 Beta soon. I also plan to do more presets for it (additionally to those i already added to the database).

Great Ingo, happy to hear that!

You should also try the "Profile" button in the top right corner in the presets browser - it allows you to add some info on you, which will be visible for everyone if they mouse-over your presets. You are welcome to post any news in your info (aka "also check my soundset for Saurus"), and the info will be updated every time a user syncs with the database. We'll also add the option of adding web links soon.

Hi Jakob,

i'll check that new Profile button.
If i would add some info about my other soundbanks it would be the finished one (e.g. Waldorf). With Saurus i have just started 12 days ago but already got around 15-16 presets (not sure if all are in the final selection). originally it was planned to continue doing presets for the Curve 2 Beta at that time but as always something (a new synth in this case) came into the way... Crying or Very sad Smile

Anyway i'm not sure if the profile in Curve 2 is a good place to do advertisement not related to Curve or Cableguys products.

Hi jakob,

Yes, I understand the problem that it would give if someone already uses that preset in a project. Therefore I suggested an option to be able to delete an accidentelly uploaded preset only within an hour (or so) after uploading.

Your suggestion is also a good solution, but a more overall 'drastic' one in this case Smile
