This is where we gossip when we gossip.

One of many (mostly ambient) I thought of when thinking of a "hypnotic" song:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ANOf27d5lyg

Would love to hear some examples from others of what they consider hypnotic songs.

edit: Time limit's going to be tough with this one! Shit!
GMoneh - Thu Mar 01, 2012 8:05 am
I've been giving it some thought to the interpretation of the theme...

To me, hypnotic would not be interpreted as "put me to sleep"... rather, it'd be something calming, yes, but also something that would grab your attention to the point where you need to concentrate on the music.

Ambient music, on the other hand, at least for me, is usually background music... you turn it on but then you can turn your attention to other things... hardly hypnotic...

I don't have any examples, though Sad . I guess whatever grabs the attention is different for each individual...
kryptonaut - Thu Mar 01, 2012 8:32 am
Interesting - I quite liked that Helios track but I wouldn't have said it was particularly hypnotic. Maybe this is going to be another month where we have as many definitions of the theme as there are entrants!

To me, a hypnotic track draws you in and keeps you feeling as though you know where you are whilst gradually taking you to new places - with just enough happening to keep you listening, but not so much that you're on the edge of your seat wondering what's around the next corner.

I'd call this hypnotic:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pjy1Zv8ZFdY

Or this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BpoWWnR348M

Or big chunks of Tubular Bells for that matter. Any other definitions? Smile

Nice theme!

The "pulses" song kryptonaut posted is pretty cool - manages to both by hypnotic and musical. The others not nearly repetitive enough for me Wink Have been listening to stuff like this too long:

Hypnotic is derived from Hypnos, the Greek god of sleep...
farlukar - Thu Mar 01, 2012 10:20 am
Truedat, but etymology does not equal definition.

This is hypnotic to me - Just found this guy participating in the February Album Writing Month Challenge.

I think you're spot on. And if everyone else interprets hypnotic as what amounts to "repetitive & boring", then I'm tempted to enter this one and take an advantage Wink
IrionDaRonin - Thu Mar 01, 2012 10:04 pm
Amazing examples in Farlukar post.

Nice harmonic sequences, repetitive loops, strange sounds, but in a nice subarmonic tones.
Makes me get into trance.

Interesting theme, can't wait to listen with what you will come this month.

Have a good day, guys Smile

The contest name (and the sleepy therein) is just there because that's what hypnotists said on TV and in movies when I was growing up.
evo2slo - Fri Mar 02, 2012 11:10 am
Great examples. That Steve Reich track posted by kryptonaut is amazingly hypnotic.

Good to see so many different genres as examples. Occurred to me that there's also lots of hypnotic krautrock out there:

Yes, Mr. Wuolio has a unique gift. The video is mesmerizing. I do share some concerns about trying to be hypnotic with a 3 minute time limit.

I may just try for what is necessary to be hypnotic, then edit to 3 minutes and post two versions, one for contest, one for full hypnosis and chance getting the boot.

Perhaps these bits of music could be considered slightly different examples of what might fit within this theme:

From Arvo Part's "Tabula Rasa"

From Allan Petterson's "Symphony #7"

Ooo, nice theme. Hope I get time to knock something together for it.

D.H. Miltz wrote:

Hey, D.M., is this a new development?
Quote:
10 - Every submission has to be tagged with:
c) origin of loops and samples, if they're not free of copyright (this includes CreativeCommons material; please read and follow the license of the samples and loops you use); naming the origin of copyright free loops is also encouraged, but not mandatory

I took this rule to mean that samples were allowed so long as attributed. But asking people to tag their samples just so they can be asked to remove them seems odd and a bit convoluted. I'd have thought one benefit of requiring attribution was that these things are transparent, and voters can then apply their own DQ if they so choose. Perhaps that's legally naive of me.

Not the end of the world either way, but we've had some very creative sampling here over the years.
D.H. Miltz - Wed Mar 07, 2012 7:51 pm
The wording in the contest rules might need clarifying (that rule as I understood and intended it means licensed copyrighted samples, i.e. samples you're legally entitled to use), but the KVR rules are pretty clear on copyrighted material. As with the Stevie Wonder samples last month, that it seems okay to me doesn't make it legal, and if it isn't legal it isn't allowed at KVR, so it can't really be in the contest.

It could well be that I'm legally naive on this, and if someone can show me so I'll happily relax the rule, but as a general guideline, if you'd have to license the sample to release the piece commercially, you should probably not use it here (unless you license it for this purpose).
Barnadine - Wed Mar 07, 2012 8:04 pm
One of those times when copyright law trumps common sense. There's a pretty big gulf in my mind between creative use of a David Lynch sample and, as KVR puts it, posting 'pirated sample content', but I don't know the law well enough to argue the case. Ah well. Thanks anyway for clarifying, D.H.
Mister Natural - Wed Mar 07, 2012 11:01 pm
getting hypnotic here (without any illict substance)

need to polish the track a little more . . . I'm excited
Interferon - Thu Mar 08, 2012 1:45 am
I understood rule 10 in the way Barnadine wrote, but I realize I misunderstood it.

I apologize publicly for the inconvenience, and I will upload a version without those samples soon.

Sorry again, wasn't my intention to create any issue!
D.H. Miltz - Thu Mar 08, 2012 3:08 am
Thanks for understanding, Interferon.

To anyone who will need to redownload when the new version's up, I offer my apologies for the inconvenience too.

It was just a misunderstanding, and the rule needed clarification. I've added a line to it that does that (normally I wouldn't touch the rules midcontest, but since it's just making clear something I thought was already clear it seemed okay to do so; should anyone disagree, please holler).

Mister Natural, glad to hear things are going well.

Barnadine, I hope you get something together for this one too. Also, I listened to a couple of your FAWM songs the other night. Some very good stuff, "Blue Crayon" and "Breadcrumbs" especially.

I was just thinking entries are arriving a bit sooner this month than last... Smile

I'm wondering whether I should listen to each individually, ensuring that any mesmeric effects have passed before moving on to the next, rather than my usual approach of waiting till the end of month and listening to the whole playlist in one hit... I could end up missing most of them...

Hard to follow Doc Jon's superb entry with my submission.
But I am actually enjoying listening to all the entries though...

I recorded my song in around 8 hours.
But, it took about 12 fooking hours to mix (hate that part).
And another hour to upload to my website (WTF?).

I tried to go back to my early KVR days and write/produce
a song in one evening. Almost made it. Props to Emerald Tablet!

Some thoughts.

InboxZero AnteOculosCircumInspice
Like this a lot. Draws you in nicely. Slight critic. I think it would have been better if that central insistant sound eased into the background occasionally.

Interferon DreamingOnTheCouch
Broad synth pad sets a good scene and I like the way the percussion fades in. Good use of the stereo field. Fade out was a bit abrupt.

Patrick9 Hypno
Interesting synth harp? sound. Not to sure about the disonant sort of skeletal melody. To me it tends to break the atmosphere rather than build it.

Mister Natural Conversation with Dali
Like this but it's far too 'awake' for me to think of as hypnotic, especially at the start.

EmeraldTablet deeper
Hypno-pulse? I guess I should have expected that Smile Wasn't expecting the song - nice one, but again, a bit too bright.

Bjulin Special Lullaby
Very original entry. A sort of musical montage, but I think I need to wear dark glasses!

kryptonaut altered-state
Delicious - works for me.

DocJon WhileIWasSleeping
Very well done. Sort of creepy though, especially the whispered bits. Fine piano work.

Jerru Seduction of Hypnotica
That's quite an intro. Settles into a lovely rich tune. Hmmm, more whispering.

Now then, about this scantilly clad young lady...

yevster, your download link seems a bit strange, it plays ok using the embedded player but a right-click 'save as' generates a file with an .mp3 extension but containing HTML rather than mp3 data. (I am using WinXP, don't know if that's relevant.)

I can get to download your file by right-clicking your entry and choosing 'open link in new tab', then clicking the download link in the page that opens up - but this isn't the natural or intuitive way to do things.

Perhaps you should clarify in your entry, how to download you track - or maybe you could host it somewhere that doesn't manage downloads in this way?

My bad. I just tossed it on Google sites - don't have paid webhosting. I guess Google Sites screws up the MIME type or something. More sleepy thoughts.

nikp2000 mim
Some delicious sounds here, but it doesn't really draw me in.

mrblitz prayer wheel 12
I was really wondering what you'd do with this theme. Well, I don't know about hypnotic, more like bludgeoned into a stupor!

Farlukar Credulity
Some very nice phasing effects especially on phones. Very insistent though.

yevster Hypnotherapy
Very nice atmospheric piece. Definitely floaty but so short!

offthewall WatchTheWatch
Ah the traditional hypnotist approach. Quite different from anything else this month and very cleverly done. Is this what you use to quieten down your new grandson?

bzur Mesmerized
I like the idea overall, and you've got some great sounds there, but for me it doesn't quite make it. I think it's another one that's too 'awake', although I really like the way it resolves at the end Smile

forw noLighttt
Very spacey intro. Very strange idea with the words. Don't really know what to make of it, more of a horror track than hypnotic.
Emerald Tablet - Fri Mar 16, 2012 1:55 pm
kryptonaut-altered-state

In one word? WOW. In 3 words? criminal minimal subliminal
I cant believe youve made this. Its just so ...so so ..no words.

interferon_dreamingonthecouch

Must have been cold on that couch standing on the northpole. Wink
Lovely drumsounds. Very wide and full mix also.

mister natural - conversation with dali

This reminds me of music you hear on school tv or on corporate promos
The calm parts speak the most to me. Lovely sounds.
Great how things popup unexpectedly. Those guitars are pretty sweet also

farlukar-credulity

i think it was terrific but i cant remember because i fell asleep at the start
and i mean that in a possitive way. very very hypnotic track

nikp2000-mim

Zooming stripes. Sucked into this. Very hypnotic. Lovely sounds

beanpole_look_into_my_eyes

is it me or is that bassdrum a bit distorted? Think i would prefer a rounder bassdrum.
Love the vocoder. especially when it sings the high parts. The bells came as a surprice.
Would have loved this better if the overall soundquality wouldve been better

bjulin_special lullaby

Imagined green hills and a blue sky and i saw kites in the sky breaking the light of the sun
into a thousand colorfull beams The end is also awesome. My fav. This month.

docjon_whileiwassleeping

Its my favorite song and it touches me but its just not really a hypnotic track to my ear. Very lovely progressions and the sound of that piano is just sooo romantic and sweet

folderol_hours_and_hours

Dreamy / outerworldly. Fantastic composition and perhaps not completely hypnotic but captivating non the less

forw_nolighttt

I imagined myself to stand in an industrial area untill the poem came
This must be the most creative entry of all. Its also one of my favorites

inboxzero_anteoculoscircuminspice

Another very hypnotic one. I forgot the repeating bassline and was sucked into this

jerru_seduction_of_hypnotica

Lovely guitarsounds. The melody grabbed me instantly and the 70s drums are just really punchy / fresh
Such a clever composition. Many whispersongs this month Wink

mrblitz_prayer_wheel_12

Didnt expect a rock entry this month. Deserves a better ending. Smile Not a quick fade out.

offthewall_watchthewatch

what? you said watch what? for some reason i forgot all other entrys after listening

Hmmm. I seem to be making rather a lot of negative comments. Sorry about that, it's just how I see things.

beanpole Look_Into_My_Eyes
This doesn't work for me at all I'm afraid. It just comes over as strange.

Liqih hypnopipes
Well, I quite like this but don't see how it fits the theme.

knockman murmur
Very interesting Eastern basis. Has echos of some late period Beatles, and also Pink Floyd.

LagunaRising WinterOfTheSenses
Wasn't too keen on the extreme panning at the start, but it develops quite nicely. A bit too bright to be hypnotic though.

rachMiel hypnotiQue
Oh this is right out there by itself! Very eerie track. Nightmare hypnosis I'd say.

evo2slo PaintTheWaterClear
Lovely song and excellent production. More a {ahem} 'chemical' trance than a hypnotic one though.

Vulcandj Sands Of Time

Hi, Vulcandj.

As a rule, don't resubmit or change your entry without asking, but yes, you can rename and then reupload your entry. It looks like you did already. [Edit: I guess you didn't. I was looking at the address, didn't have the file yet.]

One more step, though: please add /download to the end of your link, or see this very helpful tutorial by kryptonaut.

Thanks for the comment mate, for the theme I guess that hypnopipes are more on the "trance" side
of hypnotism, just like all reagge dub music, you got that "suspended" change that almost never arrive,
...but running on a clock like beat, to stomp your feet, ...relax thru movement, not by resting still, and blah blah
kryptonaut - Fri Mar 23, 2012 1:56 am
VulcanDJ - sorry, your track still downloads as 'Sands of time.mp3' without the proper prefix. I've had this problem too when I uploaded to soundcloud. It seems that no matter what you set up in the soundcloud 'permalink' or title fields, the file name that is downloaded through that link is always the same as the name you gave it locally when you uploaded to soundcloud.

So, given that you are allowed to do so in this instance, you need to locally rename your file '1203_VulcanDJ_Sands-of-time.mp3' or something, then re-upload it to soundcloud. You need to change the permalink on the new one so that the link you posted here points to it, and then you should be good to go. If you kept the old copy as well then change its permalink so that it doesn't clash with the new one - but probably best to delete the old one first to avoid confusion.

I'll edit my 'tutorial' to make this point.

Good luck...

@Kryptonaut

First off, thanks for the great tutorial on how to do the download stuff.

Second, thanks for pointing out that it was still wrong. I'm pretty sure it is fixed now.

Just when you thought you were good with computers........
kryptonaut - Fri Mar 23, 2012 7:28 am
No problem, glad I could help!
Your link looks fine now, as far as I can see.

Cheers,

@ET
Thanks for the review. 'Dreamy' is good enough for me Smile

"...but running on a clock like beat, to stomp your feet, ...relax thru movement, not by resting still, and blah blah"

I hadn't thought of it like that. Maybe I'll have to revise some of my earlier ideas Surprised

Okay, submission thread is locked, voting thread is up.

Next month's theme: Get to the point, already. Make something musically complete and meaningful (to you and, possibly, to voters) that lasts no longer than thirty seconds. Or as farlukar might put it: a thinly disguised free-for-all with a thirty second time limit.
Laguna Rising - Sun Mar 25, 2012 3:24 am
Cool theme Very Happy I like it

Cheers

Glad to hear you like it, Laguna Rising.

I meant to add: If you like the idea, the credit is kryptonaut's; if you don't, the blame is mine. I like it.

farlukar, I thought you'd said as ______ said, but I couldn't remember what went in the blank.

30 seconds ?
I can't complete a sentence in 30 seconds, let alone a musical thought . . .

facinating challenge though

We used to have this sort of thing on Kara-Moon about 4 years ago. Quite a challenge, although, these days, I wouldn't want to have to do it on a regular basis.
For interest here is one of my 2007 entries. As well as 30 second time limit it had a theme too and this one was 'I love my car'.
Car
Emerald Tablet - Sun Mar 25, 2012 9:00 am
i still have a few 2001 kvr tracks.
a crash reset many of the join dates back then
so you have many folk who joined in 2002 who actualy have been around longer.
we did have either a 2 or 1 minute limit if i remember it correctly

30 sec is a great exercise.
inboxzero - Sun Mar 25, 2012 11:14 am
I remember the 2 minute limit from when I used to do the contest about 5 years ago.

30 seconds is going to be hard. But essentially, is the length of a telly commercial.

Just chilled out and listened to this months entries and then voted. Found this way harder than I thought it would be (or remember it being). I'm sure if I re-listen to them all again tomorrow, I'd come up with a different list of ten favourites.
satYatunes - Sun Mar 25, 2012 12:28 pm
I remember earlier it used to be 2 mins limit, which was good cause I have a problem losing track/motivation while working on longer tracks except for this month which is other way around. I thought there was no limit so I was composing away to glory and ended up over 6 mins. Fortunately, I read the rules again and cut short my track to 3 mins. The 6 min version is nearly finished. I will release it after the contest ends. I don't think I did justice to the track cause I removed a major section.

Wow, that's really short for a month... Can we make two submissions? Cool

I was thinking more like 6 entries each!
slartibartfast - Mon Mar 26, 2012 12:59 am
I started listening to all the tracks submitted this month, but woke up 12 hours later with some vague recollection of doing embarrasing things in front of a live audience. So I guess all the tracks were pretty much on theme. Smile

Now if I can just concentrate hard enough, hopefully I will get some comments out on each of the tracks over the next few days.

I could use a new ring tone for my phone. It looks like I might have a few to choose from next month. I might even try and knock up one myself..... Very Happy
IrionDaRonin - Mon Mar 26, 2012 4:29 am
Nice theme this month.
For doing a little 30 seconds track i guess lots of people will come to participate this month.

Have a good day guys Smile

Another initial observation on the tracks submitted this month.

My first listen through was on headphones. I then listened to the same tracks on my car stereo while driving to/from work. The difference in my views of some of the tracks was substantial, depending on the listening environment. Some of the better (IMHO) tracks while listening on headphones became seriously uninteresting on the car stereo - I think because the subtler details got lost in the background noise. Given the nature of this month's theme, I think those subtleties are important in creating a hypnotic ambience - so this month my comments (and voting) will be based on the impressions while listening on headphones.

Has anyone else noticed such large differences while listening to this month's tracks in different environments/on different equipment? How do you take account of these differences when deciding your votes?

I only use headphones for listening to KVR tracks.

Haha, yeah, I did. Wink

And you totally deserve it. Your piece was wicked catchy. And I'm a sucker for catchy things. And I love your textural development. Gonna listen to some more of your stuff...

I only use headphones for listening to KVR tracks.
I have three "listening environments" -- well, all sitting in front of my computer...
1) Nasty Sony PC 12" LCD monitor speakers
2) Far less nasty ViewSonic PC 24" w/s monitor speakers
3) Pretty nice Technics RP-F350 headphones

In any month, I'll use one of these for all entrants... picking which is a little hit and miss but once I've started, that's the treatment all get. I don't compare a track across environments but I recognise that some tracks work better in the lower fidelity environments than others - i.e. they're more "radio friendly" in that sense.
slartibartfast - Mon Mar 26, 2012 7:20 pm
Thanks for sharing your listening environments, pljones, rockstar_not. Having participated (and voted) in many of these contests in the past, this is the first time that I have noticed that the difference between listening on headphones or on speakers is so huge. I can only put this down to the nature of this month's theme, and the more ambient nature of many of the tracks. Interesting.

I think I'll keep it at one submission. Although, just like any other month, you could do one by yourself and one collaboration (or none by yourself and two collabs).

rachMiel, thanks for the vote!

if anyone else liked 'prayer wheel 12', here are some early versions:

http://archive.org/details/PrayerWheels

edit: oops, prayer wheel 12 attempted some '5/8 riffage', where it turns out the older versions were using much more '6/8'.

Sorry for the short comments this month: I'm rather distracted by uni work. No offence intended: this is capturing my immediate reactions mostly for the purposes of voting.

First, the top ten (as it was at the time - the order will have changed by now)
forw - Yes. This. Does it. Oh yes. Challenge to stay awake here - that's good!
Patrick9 - Worked. Very nice.
Emerald Tablet - Like that, yes...
kryptonaut - Ahhh... Tick that tock. I can get into this.
inboxzero - Kept waking me up with the odd rhytmic jumps but otherwise pretty hypnotic.
knockman - Mmm, very mesmerising. Nice tune, too.
liqih - Ah, I can see this one's goal but it's n.... ot going to work (that middle bit does better).
offthewall - This simply has to score some points. Nicely done as ever!
D.H. Miltz - Mmmmm.... relaxing
nikp2000 - Well, it's trying to hypnotise someone. It needs to try hard but it's got the idea right.

And the rest as they came (of course, if I listened to them all again, some of these could be promoted into the upper division)...
Interferon - Crackly. "Couch" as in padded? Pad? Geddit?
Mister Natural - Felt a little grey and dull rather than dali-esq...
Bjulin - Um, no. Took me nowhere.
Doc Jon - More ticking and "rain"? I like the piano. The rain sounded very fake in the end. Lovely track, though.
Jerru - Mmm, started off a little weak but improved in the middle. Less keen on the ending - too busy.
mrblitz - FFS?! W'uh? Seriously?
farlukar - Became irritating after a good start.
yevster - Nice tune. I can see the idea but it didn't quite get under my skin. Good length.
bzur - I wasn't. Nice snap at the end, though. At least, I don't think I was. Was I?
beanpole - Distracting and irritating rather than hypnotic...
Laguna Rising - Bouncy castles in the fog. Or something. Becoming French. Weird...
rachmiel - Throbbing. But somewhat unfulfilling.
evo2slo - Nice song but... um, the theme?
Vulcandj - Eastern and mystical yet not hypnotic.
oddbod - Eastern and mystical yet not hypnotic. (Uh... take two!)
rockstar_not - Hm. No connection, sorry.
slartibartfast - Needs hypnotoic visuals, I think.
Peterhud - Pleasant enough.
GMoneh - Nice tune but... not doing hypnotic for me.
satYatunes - More rain - sounds more realistic, too. But very wide awake.

(edit: 10 is an even number.)
