Chorus from diva!
Echoes in the Attic - Tue Mar 20, 2012 7:39 am
It just looks like a new skin. And doesn't particularly look like one that Urs would have made.

that is a shit skin.....bwarf
penguinfromdeep - Tue Mar 20, 2012 7:44 am
It says it has a new chorus and also some subtle improvements to the sound

But anyway it's got a Chorus......Thank Urs for that and for version 2.......... Smile

argh.

awful skin.

really really awful.
satYatunes - Tue Mar 20, 2012 8:24 am
Skin is okay but could be better. What are the changes? Is there a release note somewhere?
hakey - Tue Mar 20, 2012 8:32 am
satYatunes wrote:

The exceedingly good chorus algos from Diva have been added.

And oscillator tune mod for stacked voices behaves differently to V1 - it now works as one would expect it to, but it means that stacked voice tuned patches built on Tyrell V1 will sound quite different in V2.

Anyone spotted any other differences?
Krakatau - Tue Mar 20, 2012 8:32 am
if the ugliness of the skin is fully proportional to the quality of the sound, were is the issue ? Razz

Exactly! Who care about it anyway? This is AWESOME synth for free and it is being upgraded. YES!!
liquid wind - Tue Mar 20, 2012 8:38 am
I actually like this skin, guess I'm the only one!
3ee - Tue Mar 20, 2012 8:43 am
Got it now! Surprised
hakey - Tue Mar 20, 2012 8:48 am
The space to the right of the chorus looks about the right size for a simple delay. Wink
3ee - Tue Mar 20, 2012 9:15 am
Yeah, noticed some small differences here and there but the big one was the voice mod.

Lovely Chorus! Love

A bit disappointed on not knowing about the release ... would have updated all of my patches and done some more for the factory sound bank. :/

Wow, is there a killer new feature implemented in Tyrell v2 which would make me sad-masochisticaly want to look at such a skin more than half a second ?
Will Tyrell v3 look like Ms-Dos ?
I nearly had to shut my computer off after such a taste hi-jack Shit! Shocked
Thanks for the info, by the way HiHi

Damn that GUI is horrible! Still can't complain about free stuff!
V'ger - Tue Mar 20, 2012 12:11 pm
Great chorus, ugly-as-hell GUI.
braj - Tue Mar 20, 2012 12:25 pm
The original skin was basic but attractive, this skin is just weird in its fugliness Shocked
Crackbaby - Tue Mar 20, 2012 12:50 pm
I don't mind a little darker GUI for Tyrell

The knobs and faders looks great. The outer background is .. not what i expected. The inner background looks sort of cool but distracts the eye making it hard to see what the knobs do. I find the led at the top the easiest thing to rest my eyes on.

VariKusBrainZ wrote:

indeed, that skin is butt ugly, the original skin by urs was way better. but it's a freebie and therefore it's a nitpick... anyway, it's the sound that counts, and isn't it skinable?
Kaboom75 - Tue Mar 20, 2012 1:13 pm
Thanks for the heads up.

Thanks U-HE team this thing sounds soo good it feels like I stole it.
The skin looks great.

Well, that's what happens when a SYNTHESIZER is designed by a BASSIST Laughing

I don't get... two of the most gorgeous interfaces are flying around here, and they had to choose THIS ? Nutter

Anyway, THANKS ! this is a GREAT synth.
paterpeter - Tue Mar 20, 2012 1:21 pm
What a nice surprise! Thanks a lot Urs! And yeah, I'll have to chime in: I don't like the new skin. Can't the v1 skin be ported to v2?
Kaboom75 - Tue Mar 20, 2012 1:26 pm
The knobs and sliders are far better it can only be the border that people don't like I would rather that looked industrial mesh or carbon fiber.
Aiynzahev - Tue Mar 20, 2012 1:38 pm
Well this is great news! Thanks for the heads up I am excited about this. I hope someone makes a nice GUI for this synth soon. This has got to be one of the best freeware synth's available.

But carbon fiber is so expensive. HiHi
bmrzycki - Tue Mar 20, 2012 1:40 pm
From what I understood Urs was under the gun with several Messe projects and didn't make that GUI. I wouldn't be surprised if a V2.0.1 showed up relatively soon. So enjoy the sounds and don't worry about the GUI for now. Wink

i would remove that "effect" on the black background, would change the border, remove the amazona.de logo (would hate if it was kvr too..) , one thing that i like is that now the small view is usable ...but can't it be set as default mode view?

thnaks for this synth, yesterday i was about to do a post if this synth would ever get a nice set of fx's...one its already there Smile
filkertom - Tue Mar 20, 2012 1:58 pm
Well, I think it sounds fantastic, and I don't mind the skin all that much. However, in keeping with the general outrage on this thread, I've already reskinned it with a freshly-caught dead squirrel motif. Problem is, it keeps sliding down the screen....

Kaboom75 wrote:

No, they're not........
Kaboom75 wrote:

No it's the whole thing I don't like. nBeat's skins are 1000 times better than this. It's boggles the mind why one of those skins isn't the default. Shrug Tyrell is a retro synth. It's not supposed to look like Absynth on acid.....the nbeat skins capture the spirit of Tyrell and are period correct in my opinion....

Yes I get that it's a freebie and I'm grateful to Urs and even to the author of this new skin for his efforts but I won't even bother upgrading until it gets a proper skin. I've got Chorus Plugins...... Shrug
PlasticSoul - Tue Mar 20, 2012 2:14 pm

Confirmed here!
Crackbaby - Tue Mar 20, 2012 2:31 pm
Confirmed here also.

Btw, has anyone noticed pops on some presets?
I got them earlier today but cant reproduce it now/find the right presets. My computer can handle Tyrell more than well so i doubt that latency was the problem!

Im starting to like the GUI more and more Smile Maybe i can *hack* the data folder to change the background.
mabian - Tue Mar 20, 2012 2:31 pm
Also, it seems every sound it produces is strictly mono (correlation meter always 1; is it expected? No oscillator panning available)?

- Mario
osiris - Tue Mar 20, 2012 2:40 pm
I had a go. Can confirm the knob issue, but values change. I know it sounds mono, but just click the Chorus on, and .....wow!!!!
(I think most of these sounds were made for v1 and the chorus isn't turned on)
Lovely, lovely. Thanks so much Urs. BTW, Osc 1 & 2 aren't labeled but I'm assuming 1= Saw & 2=Pulse?
Still some big CPU. OBX Pad (?) hit 50% with 2 voice poly and 3 notes played.
Teksonik - Tue Mar 20, 2012 2:46 pm

Wow what a difference....The top one looks like someone's first Synth Edit project and the second one looks just like Tyrell sounds..... HiHi

I like the new GUI, I just don't like that strange border around it. I also think the black could be more...deinterlaced (?)

Open a Tyrell patch file in a text editor and alter "MMT1=0" to "MMT1=VCA1:Pan". Open the patch in Tyrell and "VCA1:Pan" will now appear as the first mod matrix slot destination.
osiris wrote:

So I have Diva, I'm just wondering if Tyrell is kinda redundant for a Diva user. From my experience they use nearly the same CPU too Smile The main thing is it is another synth to play with and a bunch of other presets to work with. I know that is off-topic but while we are at it, what do you think? Anything about Tyrell that can't be done in Diva?
justin3am - Tue Mar 20, 2012 3:52 pm
In Tyrell, you can trigger envelopes from the LFOs ala Roland SH-2 and such. I always liked that trick for creating psuedo-apeggiated/sequenced sounds. You can't do that with any other U-He synth.

Cool! I'll have to try that.

What about recreating that hardware box as a GUI? Although maybe not the yellow, reminds me of the Mopho, maybe white?

You've also got variable soft-sync, the unique spreading bandpass filters, and audio-rate PWM (can Diva do this? Will have to check).

Plus, I find the simple complexity of Tyrell really helps when making certain types of sounds.
Crackbaby - Tue Mar 20, 2012 4:30 pm
Where can i change the amount of voices? Not unison, but total amount. It seems to be 8 voices in total?
scoobz - Tue Mar 20, 2012 5:27 pm
I thought the carbon fibre might work if the application was a bit different...

Funkybot's Evil Twin - Tue Mar 20, 2012 6:43 pm
Fantastic, and unexpected update! The new chorus sounds great and makes this a lot more versatile, and it just sounds better to me overall (might just be me though). When I saw the thread title I was fully expecting this to be a thread where someone was going to ask for some feature request or crazy update. Instead, it was a surprise update!

And the GUI isn't quite as bad as it's being made out to be, especially for a free synth that sounds amazing. Had the original Tyrell GUI never have existed, I think people would be a lot more forgiving on the GUI. Plus, it's skinnable. We're probably hours away from the first new skin hitting the net.
braj - Tue Mar 20, 2012 7:21 pm
Have you guys found out how to turn on the hidden reverb yet??
hersoot - Tue Mar 20, 2012 8:00 pm
Used as a chorus effect only (audio input but no MIDI input) the CPU hit is virtually nil. Very nice.
satYatunes - Tue Mar 20, 2012 8:05 pm
This is what I have got so far.. can someone tell me how to edit the upper part.. The knobs, etc. are not visible. Please be gentle, as this is only a draft copy, used the knobs that I created earlier for another skin. Also, I am open to suggestions and ideas.

Phase47 - Tue Mar 20, 2012 8:13 pm

I'll wait until the '1978' skin is adapted to V2. Regarding the chorus, I'll be investing in the ERS Dimension D in the future, so I wonder if I need to upgrade...

To me the skin affects how I see and can comprehend the interface. The current new skin just hurts my eyes, I personally didn't like the old default skin either so found a skin that worked for me. Which is great, I'm very happy Tyrell is skinable, actually this fugly skin guarantees that better ones will come Smile it's all good!

I like Tyrell too. One of the best free synths ever.

The v2 SKIN, however, is horrible.

So, if I'm understanding the Oscillator knobs, we can mix waves like the old Moogs? If so, yay! Please tell me the LFO can modulate wave shape.
One thing I want to know, why Tyrell can use more CPU set on 2 voices than Massive can use with 16 voices and 4 Unison? Is it because you code on a Mac ? Laughing
Be sure and leave room for an arp on that GUI.... Prayer
Kaboom75 - Wed Mar 21, 2012 5:42 am
I think Tyrell is supposed to be based on U-He Ace programming which is a simulation of an Analog from the stone age simulations of analog add tons more CPU usage. Got this info of the old tyrell from the U-He website http://www.u-he.com/cms/tyrelln6

Tyrell is the name of a project by the German online magazine Amazona.de. A reader survey and follow-on forum posts provided a pool of ideas for a low cost HARDWARE analogue synth, which Mic 'Moogulator' Irmer used to develop quite a powerful concept. Based on a design similar to Roland's classic Juno 60, a few modules and novel features could be added without making the product too expensive...

However, it soon became obvious that developing the hardware would have taken years, so I offered to turn the core design into a freeware softsynth. That was late 2010. Only a few weeks later, TyrellN6 was already out for beta testing! After some serious bug-fixing and fine tuning, the final release version became available in April 2011.

Download TyrrelN6 here: Amazona TyrellN6 page
(German language, scroll down for the Mac and PC file links)

A few key features
classic, familiar user interface with extras
smooth overdrive in the oscillator mixer
filter output can be fed back into the mixer
unison modes with voice-specific modulation source
envelopes can be looped or triggered via LFO
envelopes retrigger like classic hardware
