Or, do I get the older, retail box version of amplitube metal?
Ampltitube metal is used in this demo, on the rhythm part:

I assume it would be the latest x86 version of Metal showcased on the IK Website.
A3 incorporates the modules from Metal and Hendrix and contains the latest updates to all their Amps including Fender and SVX.

You will get a serial for a Digital Delivery version. The best way to get the latest version with least effort would be to register/authorize that serial using the Authorization Manager. If you don't have it or AmpliTube 3 Free you should install AmpliTube 3 Free, then all you have to do once authorized is to open Custom Shop and click "Restore My Gear" there and you'll get all the current versions. This way, you'll be using it within the AmpliTube 3 framework where you get the best models of the gear, the cabinets and room and other great aspects introduced in AmpliTube 3.

You get both. By registering/installing AmpliTube Metal, the corresponding models will be unlocked in AmpliTube 3 CS, where you will get all the advantages of 64-bit, remastered DSP, and 3D mic placement in the cab section. If you use AmpliTube Metal instead, you will be using the older software.

while in the custom shop, register the serial#, I get the remastered amplitube metal.
