I dunno, anything goes about reverbs and/or excess buying of the same?

You scare me with this Gearslutz'y thread of the "buy it all" approach.
Most of the reverbs suck anyway, so I won't buy!

I do excess CODING of the same. Does that count?

Absolutely!

Those X vs. Y threads can get kind of tense.

Reverb should be more about fun.

And no, no one really has to buy them all.

That's funny and true of not only you but others like Warp69. When I was reading a bunch of that old Scope stuff, Martin was alluding to most reverb programmers researching and even reverse engineering each other's work. I think your blog is a testament to the former.

Oh, come on now, don't be a party pooper. You know the main difference between a surprise party and an intervention is whether or not everyone yells surprise, right? Well, then there's that getting carted off to rehab (relab) thing too, I suppose.

I can't stop buying reverbs, but I'm using them all, Valhalla Shimmer and ArtsAcoustic.

I don't know why someone would want a ton of reverb plugins. I guess it depends on the style of music you make, but once you have found the few that really define your sound, what is the motivation to keep buying them? I have a few freebies and a couple of commercial ones, and I have yet to find myself stuck during mixing for yet another reverb algorithm. Is there really a need for more and more reverbs or are we looking at a case of GAS? If there is something I am missing, I would truly like to know.

antithesist - Wed Apr 25, 2012 6:09 pm
That's the spirit! Funny, too. I think all the ValhallaRoom vs. X and Y, and CSR going on sale for cheap kind of pushed things over the edge. It culminated for me with accusations of a particular developer's uh... prostitutes? maybe roaming too freely. There's probably a better way to put all that, but I'm itchin' to get back to the fun. Where's my drink?
@midnight - Wed Apr 25, 2012 6:54 pm
I don't really like to use a bunch of different reverbs. I usually stick to one reverb, with a few different settings, because I understand that is how professional records are made.
@midnight - Wed Apr 25, 2012 6:55 pm
Apart from the odd guitar with a special spring reverb, or what have you. But for general reverb duties, I use one reverb per album, with a few different settings. I let the songwriting do the rest.
Aiynzahev - Wed Apr 25, 2012 7:08 pm
Run the LX480 through Aether on some long endless reverb setting at 50% mix. Beautiful. (For thematic and textured styles). I will post some examples sometime.

Those are the only two I won though. The only others I may get are TC Electronic's $40 one, Lexicon native or some sort and ArtsAcoustic and Shimmer. These are not priority buys of course Smile

Of course it's GAS, my reverb's bigger than yours, that one does something that mine doesn't do, etc. Plus there's plain old shopaholism, buyer's remorse, collecting and hoarding. You're not missing anything, other than the serious aspect of what Shy wrote. Most people seem to want bigger and better, not to mention newer and faster. My problem is with wanting more vs. wanting less (maybe that does more, maybe not). I've been thinking of it more like this lately: do you mind having a lot of presets for your favorite synth? If you don't, then maybe it's okay to think of your plug-ins as presets. That makes it okay to have a lot, right? Of course, this all goes for other than reverb plug-ins. Okay, back to the fun! We're going to try to have a sack race in a little while.
Aiynzahev - Wed Apr 25, 2012 9:35 pm
Well maybe for some, but It depends on the music you make as well.

Some people use reverb to create realistic spaces while others do different things with them. They vary a lot in this regard and there is a certain quality about reverbs that makes them addictive. They vary so much in character.

Dang! A verb block party and I missed the invite. All I can say, is that when I was younger I could never get enough tail. Just the one LXP in the rack. Very Happy

Then it was the used SPX90 and midiverb followed by the Eclipse, PCM90 and H8000 and there was never a cool day in the studio. DSP space heaters on a hot summer night. Now, for a tiny fraction of the cost and heat, in VST verbs, I can get fully soaked in whooshy, splashy, dreamy, dazzling, dark, soaring ambiance, bask in finely enveloping and coarsely morphing transients that bloom in delight while floating away effortlessly to the ends of perception. Multiple times.

To a mere mortal a great decay is very nearly the most sensual way to almost exquisitely touch eternity.

Sure, I'm way over-tailed for someone my age and it's a bit like death by chocolate dipped in Valhalla sauce, but I'm not ashamed to admit it:

I'm a reverb whore.
I'll take your slapback and ask for more.
Whisper to me in your most intimate space,
Dunk me in your darkened chamber, stretch me on your sizzling plate,
Toss me down your endless hall, slam me hard against your tiled walls, I won't hesitate.
When the arrow of time and the bow of space dance in place, in the play of waves rippling over and over to the last ethereal trace I adore, I embrace, for...
To the core, I'm your reverb whore.

Kick me to the PayPal curb, but mark my words - I vow to buy all the verbs.

Reverbs are actually one of the very few plugins that I feel I can not have enough of (you all know what other type of processor I crave on a daily basis.. Very Happy ). It's simply because they all behave and sound very different, even the ones based on the same topology it seems.

Lately I've began using a ton of very subtle, carefully placed reverbs all over the mix. It's not uncommon for me to have more than 15 reverb plugins in a project. Each have their own purpose.. not all at the same time throughout the mix though but carefully choosing reverbs to add emotion to certain parts and also helping dry, mono, instruments to sit in the mix with a monophonic and short slap back reverb. It's just one of these effects that I just don't have enough of and constantly crave for more. It's a mental-illness for sure! Laughing

Cheers!

@midnight:

You are most nearly correct. Very few truly professional audio engineers constantly pursue various components. It's typical that you have a good plate, a good hall/room reverb, and perhaps a couple of cool niche plugins.

The same holds true for compressors and EQs. It is very wise and a best practice to have two or three good quality components and be able to wield them well. Just because you have 15 guitars doesn't mean you can join any band you want. If you can't play well on a $300 MIM strat, you still won't sound any better on a $1200 USA Strat Deluxe. Capiche?

Nashiville audio engineer extraordinaire, Joe Gilder, often produces incredible tracks using nothing more than the plugs included with Pro Tools. although he owns some high end components by Waves, etc., he's a firm believer in developing your craft, rather than always lusting after a new mic, plugin, outboard effect, etc..

After more than 30 years of experience within various facets of performance/recording/production, I fully agree with Mr. Gilder. BTW, although I'm not affiliated with him in any way, you will learn some great tips from him by visiting his web site, http://www.homestudiocorner.com/

I stole that image from Hyperbole and a Half, and added the text via some meme image editor site.

Why Hyperbole and a Half? Because it is AWESOME! I started saying "[blank] ALL the [blanks]!" after reading that strip, before I knew it had become a meme. Apparently a few hundred thousand others had the same not terribly original idea. Just like "Dances With Space Wolves" was independently invented a few thousand times by people who saw "Avatar." Convergent evolution of irony.

The above image is the most brilliant depiction of compulsive computing I have ever seen. And I was actually doing something similar last night. I stayed up until 3 am re-reading a bunch of Gerzon papers.

Since now, you are no longer allowed to post in this thread. Of course, there is no way to enforce this rule and there is no punishment for breaking it. It's strictly by the honor system, sort of an integrity thing, if you will, or even if you won't. You can also just ignore this and post goofy cat pictures that have nothing to do with reverb. That seems to be what this once fun thread is devolving into anyway. That would put you ahead of the curve.

it is no fun using what works only, buy them all!

This thread is sailing close to the wind - it dares to question the logic of endless insatiable consumption.

I am reminded of that scene in Network where the captain of industry confronts Peter Finch and tells him he is messing with the primal forces of nature
Quote:
You have meddled with the primary forces of nature, Mr Beale, and I won't have it! Is that clear?

You think you merely stopped a business deal. That is not the case. The Arabs have taken billions of dollars out of this country, and now they must put it back! It is ebb and flow, tide and gravity. It is ecological balance.

You are an old man who thinks in terms of nations and peoples. There are no nations. There are no peoples. There are no Russians. There are no Arabs. There are no Third Worlds. There is no West. There is only one holistic system of systems. One vast and immane, interwoven, interacting, multi-varied, multi-national dominion of dollars. Petro-dollars, electro-dollars, multi-dollars, reichmarks, rands, rubles, pounds and shekels.

It is the international system of currency which determines the totality of life on this planet. That is the natural order of things today. That is the atomic, and sub-atomic and galactic structure of things today.

And YOU have meddled with the primal forces of nature. And you will atone.

Am I getting through to you, Mr Beale?

You get up on your little twenty-one inch screen and howl about America and democracy. There is no America. There is no democracy. There is only IBM and ITT and AT&T, and DuPont, Dow, Union Carbide and Exxon. Those are the nations of the world today.

What do you think the Russians talk about in their Councils of State? Karl Marx? They get out their linear programming charts, statistical decision theories, mini-max solutions, and compute the price-cost probabilities of their transactions and investments, just like we do.

We no longer live in a world of nations and ideologies, Mr Beale. The world is a college of corporations, inexorably determined by the immutable bye-laws of of business. The world is a business, Mr Beale. It has been since man crawled out of the slime.

And our children will live, Mr Beale, to see that ... perfect ... world in which there is no war nor famine, oppression or brutality. One vast and ecumenical holding company for whom all men will work to serve a common profit. In which all men will hold a share of stock.

All necessities provided. All anxieties tranquilized. All boredom amused.

There's a fine line between reverb and delay, reverb, delay, verb delay verb delay ... but on reflection I have no chorus.
