Introducing
"The Music Box" Sample Library, by
Bad Cat Media Group. A deeply sampled music box instrument for
EXS 24 and
Kontakt 4.2.4+
We took 16 different music boxes and meticulously recorded each one note by note to create a highly expressive music box instrument with all the nuances and intricacy of the real thing. In an effort to make an instrument of the highest quality & detail, we made sure to include every subtly possible. Each crank, creek, scratch, buzz, ting and scrape was left in and the result is something quite organic and simply inspiring to play. The entire library was recorded using Ribbon Microphones at
24bit 48khz.
There is a minimum of 8 velocity layers per note. Due to the nature of the music box and the general range of such devices we ended up with quite a few velocity layers for some pitches (40+). Instead of using round robins we decided to use many velocity layers so that a performance could easily be altered but not be random.
The Music Box is an intuitive instrument that is sure to stimulate creative ideas. It is capable of childlike nursery rhymes, eerie melodies, enchanting passages and much more. The Kontakt version of The Music Box not only contains the basic instrument patch but also 10 highly useful factory patches derived from our samples. These patches range from pads and electric piano-like sounds to extra terrestrial sound fx. The Kontakt version will only work in the full version of Kontakt 4.5 and higher. It will also work in Kontakt player in demo mode which lasts 30 minutes.
We are very excited about the unique quality of "The Music Box" sample library and would like to offer an
introductory price of 19.99.
Over 750 samples in a 420mb download.
Check out the sound cloud links and demo videos to hear it first hand.
All the best from all of us here at Bad Cat Media Group.

This seems to be a very respectable product! I love how indeed, you've captured a mysterious, foreboding tone with your samples.
I'd like to know though; can the miscellaneous scrape and crank noises be turned off?
BadCat Media Grp - Sat May 05, 2012 4:15 pm
Great question!
Those creeks and scrapes that you hear are part of the samples. There are a few really great sounding "clean" music box sounds available elsewhere so we decided to capture the most raw and "edgy" sound possible. That being said the velocity layers on most notes are packed together so tightly (40 or more in some cases) that if there is a click or ting your not happy with simply adjust the velocity a few points in either direction in your piano roll editor and get another version of that note. It's possible to get completely clean performances but it wasn't designed for that purpose. So I'm sorry but no there is no option to turn off those characteristic sounds. But that's a solid idea for a possible update in the future!
All the best

Sound wonderful my only question is re compatibility before I buy.
You list Kontakt 4.5+
Does that mean K4 OR K5 as the last update to K4 was Kontakt 4.24 there isnt a Kontakt 4.5???
BadCat Media Grp - Wed May 09, 2012 3:37 am
Yes, you are 100% correct. The product will work in the latest version of Kontakt 4 and Kontakt 5. We will correct that. Thank you for bringing it to our attention! Kontakt 4.2.4 will most definitely work.

19.99 cad, Canadian dollars exactly.
So if your not in Canada and your dollar is worth more than it will be cheaper and of course the opposite is true.
No tax!

Thanks---it looks like if the google conversion is correct, the product is about one USD more than the list price, which is almost negligible. I think paypal adds a tax to foreign exchange, so I'm not sure what form of payment I should use yet, if I decide to purchase The Music Box.
EDIT: Paypal is required from what I understand. Never mind.
BadCat Media Grp - Fri May 11, 2012 12:52 pm
Yes pay pall is required, sorry synchronizer. Seems to be a safe and secure way of doing things. I believe there may be a very small currency conversion fee if your not paying in cad.
Hope that helps.

Hey Guys!
Well, this is something that we have been pondering, so, having said that! We @ BadCat Media Group have decided to bundle these two instruments together for the low price of $19.99. So for anyone who has purchased Kontakt, or the EXS 24 instrument, You will be receiving a download link for the other format under purchased when you log in to your account at
www.badcatmediagroup.com/store. From this point on we will continue to develop for Kontakt while including an EXS 24 Instrument patch As well.
In addition to the above, we are also working on a distilled patch which will be a "cleaner" version with less of the organic sounds included in the original. This will be a free bonus update available for all those who have purchased.
All the best - BadCat

That sounds great! I still haven't purchased anything yet, but I'm thinking about it very much.
I wonder though, do any of the patches work well in a haunted-style song with much reverberation and a creepy atmosphere?

Hey synchronizer!
I would say yes to that. It was designed with a more creepy/eerie vibe in mind. If you listen to Emmet Cookes' demo (the first one on the soundcloud playlist) you'll see that he came up with something in that style.
In terms of the extra patches that come with the kontakt version, yes, I would say they do work pretty well. Especially DISTANT TINES, HAUNTED ICE PALACE and EERIE. Also if you put lots of reverb and tuck in (low volume) some of the sound design patches like UFO and WHAT WAS THAT? you can create some real depth and texture in the background of a haunting cue.
All the best Synchronizer!

Hey guys,
Just wanted to thank all our current customers and everyone who has expressed interest in The Music Box update and The Mini Keys. In fact, there has been so much interest that we are actually overloading our current server, so we are planning on moving our site to a new one that can support a much bigger volume.
Some of you have been experiencing issues so we are currently doing everything in our power to get up and running quickly and better than ever.
We will be taking a day or two to re-platform our site to the new server.
We apologize in advance for the wait and we will keep you fully informed about these changes by email and on forums.
Thanks so much for your patience!
All the best! From all of us @ Bad Cat Media Group
