i wonder why anyone would buy this over shimmer or toraverb?

Confused

I think the RRP is very telling: $199.

Some things never change, given the opportunity.

The name, features, subtle and maybe not so subtle differences. I ran them head to head for a few hours, basically until I couldn't stand it anymore and/or to the point that I didn't want any of them. But when I came back, all three demonstrated something unique for me.

The Reaktor Spacemaster variants that David Torn likes so much seemed in a similar ballpark too, though I didn't spend nearly as much time there. Also, the the freeze and kill buttons on the BH are nice. But yeah, one or even none of those three is probably enough for the average bear, although for the ambient long reverb aficionado? I'll let you answer that one for yourselves.

As usual, it will be more about money, discounts, timing, desire and guilt for me if and when I do or don't get it. So, it's not a have to buy or a definitely won't buy. They're also throwing them in with the stompboxes for a limited time (heh, time, get it?). But whenever I start looking at those, I see an Eclipse not too far beyond or actually for less than all four, plus I already have a 3000. That's why.

Trying to decide on this. The intro of $99 is appealing but still with the abundance of reverbs I am struggling to justify a niece in the rack.

The overall effect, the effects bar, freeze and kill buttons does make this an interesting effects/live instrument. Wish it was a tad cheaper. Must admit shimmer is starting draw me in as I am liking VahallaRoom and both natively available in 64bit where as I am finding Blackhole Bridged in Cubase with jBridge is causing some nasty glitches on my system.

I can not however seeing many selling $199.99 looking forward to the H3000 algos saying that Smile

They also sell BH bundled with an iLok for $111 for a limited time. A quite inexpensive way to get into the world of iLok plugins.

I really liked the reverb on this, but not much else. Couldn't see myself using it much for $199. I'll wait for the H3000, the most insanely overdue native plugin ever.

That's enough of that nonsense.

Do they have a Demo?.... I can't see it on their site.

Question

I remember there used to be a demo for Variverb, but I don't see it on the site either.
hibidy - Fri May 11, 2012 9:13 pm
Oh, no demo anymore? Try searching all over, I remember magix having some strange website stuff. I had it though years ago and sold it when I went x64 so it's been a while.

why?

ilok 2 is going to take ages to crack, is not nonsense, it's like syncrosoft, it can always be updated to counter act new cracks, and at this stage is still completely uncracked on both platforms going well over a year.

they have the right to protect their work and at least get a head start.

So for now at least, anyone who wants the BH or other eventide plugins, has to buy them. sounds great to me. Thumbs Up!
hibidy - Sat May 12, 2012 7:36 pm
Nope, not doing anymore ilok. I have an ilok one, if that is not good enough then poo.

I pay for my software, if others don't then I'm not paying extra.

I don't mind ilok So added the blackhole demo licence to my ilok but there is no download demo on the website.

The demo installer is the same as the release installer. You can find it here:

Comparing Blackhole with Shimmer, I just needed to know if I want the hole...similar settings, I programmed Blackhole first and then tried to imitate that sound with Shimmer, demo starts with BH, then the same piano impro goes through Shimmer::

I actually prefer the Black Hole - the high frequency decay is longer on Black Hole compared to Shimmer, but Shimmer have longer low frequency decay - I believe you can get Shimmer way closer if you want.

What an awful name for a plugin.
bbaggins - Fri May 25, 2012 9:49 am
Thanks for those comparisons. I did like BH a little better, but not $150 better.

It's only 49 bucks difference atm, isn't it? They still have the intro-offer going on. But Sean's prices are unbeatable anyway, he should at least double them imo (duck and cover...) Help

This week only, type in the special discount code and get ValhallaShimmer for $99 (regularly $50). That's a savings of -49 dollars!

Very Happy

I gotta admit, I was able to get ValhallaShimmer and the Blackhole plugin to sound pretty much identical in my testing. Which is weird, as I had never heard any Eventides in person when I coded Shimmer. Back then, the minimum entry price was $2K for an Eclipse. I based my Black Hole preset on some sound examples I heard on GearSlutz. The examples were from the H8000, which was probably running at 96 KHz, which is why I used the Bright color mode for the preset. The Blackhole plugin clearly uses linear interpolation, which is the same as the Dark color mode in Shimmer.

Laughing

It took a few seconds for that to sink in. Embarassed

I have to admit the demos sound pretty close and I'd be hard pressed to say one was a lot better or even any better than the other. Maybe I thought the Blackhole plug sounded a tiny bit smoother? Again this could be the high frequency decay that's making me think that, but in the end I think Eventide will have a hard time going from their introductory $99 price to the full $199 price.
4damind - Sun May 27, 2012 7:30 am
"Smoother".. Yes, also may findings. But eventually more a settings thing.
I don't think it sounds better or very different than Valhalla Shimmer.
cyphersuit - Thu Mar 28, 2013 11:32 am
is blackhole 64 bit yet? can one automate the flashy slider in the middle?
Kaboom75 - Thu Mar 28, 2013 11:45 am
Eventide said march 2012 they are working on a 64bit version. Around two months ago they said all plugisn will be 64bit by this march but still no sign. Keep an eye on this webpage. http://eventide.com/AudioDivision/Support/Plug-ins/Native%20Plug-in%20Support.aspx

I thought the H3000 plugin did not include reverb algorithms ?
