A blues-ish song, another original from StudioDLP. Yes, the production SUCKS but I've been told already. Maybe you'll like the song, maybe not, but here 'tis.
Comments welcome, as always.
Btw, the various remixes have been added to the thread as they show up, so the latest mix is always at or near the end of the thread.
Best,

This is great Dave - very enjoyable and a rare treat (I think?) to have a cool blues track here.
TBH, the production sounds fine to me - I'm tempted to say that those who think it sucks are talking bollocks, but no doubt they know better...
Anyway, very nice. Please make another soon

Thank you for listening ! There's more on the way, I've been in songwriting mode for a while and have a bunch of new things. They'll get here as soon as I can get my [expletive deleted] mixes done.
Someday I'll figure out how to really use a compressor...
Best regards,

Great song. Well sung and played. I think the production is pretty good and the vocals sound very well recorded indeed. This is perfect late-night listening (3 times so far).
Nice work

Thank you, seismic, you're very kind.

I must have some of the crappiest gear for recording, but I do what I can with it. The guitar is a POS, the mics are a cheapo Yamaha MZ-something and a Shure SM58. Fortunately, I think the SM58 was somehow bound to me at birth, so my voice is well-suited to it. In my songs everything works around the voice.
In case anyone's interested, here's the gear list for this song :
Yamah MZ106s and Shure SM58 mics
Yamaha DMP11 mixer
AudioBuddy preamp
M-Audio Delta 66 audio interface
cheap (under $100) Ibanez electroacoustic guitar
cheap (under $100) Ibanez electric bass
original drum loops from Beta Monkey
Ardour3 (Linux) recorder/editor

Nice vocal on this. I didn't mind the mix, although I did find it sounded better on headphones. Well done. Thanks.
StickyWicket - Fri Jun 15, 2012 5:02 am
I truly liked the song and your vocals (which came out really well). Regarding the mix, I think if you lowered the drums (cymbals) a few dB with a little less reverb, it would enhance your vocals and guitar. The drums (to my ears) seem to distract away the rest of the song.
You have a very good voice and I hope to hear more from you.
Thanks for sharing.

@DH and StickyW : Thanks for lending your ears to my efforts, I appreciate it.
I made the session available to anyone who wanted to remix it in Ardour3, here are two results:
Mix by Jason Jones, drummer and owner of Advanced Budget Studios in Utah, USA :
http://advancedbudgetstudios.com/clients/testbed/On_Board_The_Blues.mp3
Mix by my friend Fons Adriaensen, DSP guru and audio engineer based in Italy :
http://kokkinizita.linuxaudio.org/linuxaudio/downloads/dp_onboardtheblues.mp3
Comments welcome, as always.
Three other fellows are working on it, I'll add their productions as I receive them.

To my ears (headphones), both of those mixes are much, much better and cleaner. Listening to the overall song structure, I'd like to make a small suggestion in using a brushed drum kit (instead of sticks) or something a little lighter which would bring out the focus on the vocals/guitar (IMHO). Nice work!!

We are of one mind.
I'll ask Jason if he can do a remix with brushes, I agree that the sticks aren't in the song.
Thanks again, I'll let the guys know about comments received here. I'm not sure if they sub to KVR.

Greetings,
Another mix of the material, this time from fellow Ardourista Ricardus Vincente :

And another from another fellow Ardourista known to me only as McGruff :

Good clean fun for all !

I listened to the four new mixes tonight, and I think the stripped down one by Ricardus Vincente works best. In that one nothing stood out and made me think "hm, if
that were different..." -- I was just hearing the song.

That Ricardus Vincente mix is teriffic. Great clarity and nakedness (Belewprints reference) in evidence here.

Even the world wide web has become a small world after all...
This sounds great.
I wouldn't expect anything else from my hometown bluesman.
thanks...

More mixes, starting with one from fellow Ardour user Matt Francomb :
http://www.glara.co.uk/dphilips/onboardtheblues_4cd_r1_Session.ogg
And from the Linux Audio Users mail list, this mix from S. Massy :
http://www.wolfdream.ca/x/audio/dpblues/Phillips_-_OnboardTheBlues_SMmix.ogg
Comments are very welcome, the mixers have asked for feedback.
Big thanks to all who have responded. It's been a very interesting exercise so far.
Incidentally, S. Massy's mix was made with stem WAVs saved in Ardour3. The stems are available on request if anyone here is interested in making their own remix of the song.

the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th mixes sound 'better'. the guitar on the first mix sounds 'squashed' by a compressor or somesuch; to the point where it 'pulsates' or 'pumps' in these cheapo headphones. i don't know if it's compression or what; but that's what it sounds like.
the 2nd - jason jones - mix sounds like additional drums were added.
in any event, on all of the mixes, the singing and lyrics are epic.
Ricardus - Tue Jun 26, 2012 1:21 pm
Thanks everyone who liked my mix! My goal was for the mix to be immediate and to the point, the way I see blues as a musical form.
No doubled guitars, and no doubled vocals. Just a guy and a guitar.
StudioDave - Wed Jun 27, 2012 3:15 am
Greetings,
Yes, even more mixes:
From Raffaele Morelli :

As always, comments are most welcome, particularly regarding the mix characteristics, though I won't mind if you comment on the song too.

Brother Charles refutes your assertion.
@Ricardus: I think there's just already been a lot of focus on this project. Perhaps more interest will arise when I get the song's Web page up. As I mentioned, I'll link to the session and stem files there, hopefully more players will join the party then.
Best,
dp
PS: It looks as if your mix is the most popular. I've received more positive comments about it than any other so far.
Ricardus - Thu Jul 19, 2012 8:44 am
Yeah, it seems to have gotten a lot of nice reviews. That's cool. That last review did indeed refute my claim!

Greetings,
Two more mixes, quite different from the versions already posted.
First up, the "guicussion" mix from Thorsten Wilms :
http://archive.org/download/GetOnBoardTheBluesGuicussionMix/get_on_board_the_blues__guicussion-mix.ogg
Next, the "4 to da flo!" mix from Julien Claassen :
http://juliencoder.de/nama/jpc-onboard_the_blues.ogg
http://juliencoder.de/nama/jpc-onboard_the_blues.mp3
Wow. Just... wow. Julien rocks the world.
So there ya go. Comments welcome, as always. Even more mixes on the way. Watch this space for announcements.

Greetings,
Waiting on two more mixes. I've already received one from Robin Gareus but I think he's planning to re-record it. Harry Van Haaren has the tracks too, he's still working on his mix.

It's still my favorite.
I'm glad you bumped this. I listened to the last two mixes and then forgot to come and comment. Interesting in both cases to hear this taken in such different directions. This is a cool project.

Thanks, D.H., I'm glad you're enjoying the show. I'm having a ball listening to what they're all doing to my song.
Stem files and the original Ardour3 session files are still available on request, if anyone wants to join in. Btw, the Ardour session can be converted to other DAW formats with the AA Translator utility.

My friend and quondam roomie Robin Gareus came up with this splendid version:
http://robin.linuxaudio.org/get_on_board_the_blues_road_version.ogg
http://robin.linuxaudio.org/get_on_board_the_blues_road_version.mp3
A FLAC version is also available for those of you who simply must have the highest audio quality :
http://robin.linuxaudio.org/get_on_board_the_blues_road_version.flac
Incredibly, there's still another version in the works, from my friend Harry Van Haaren, I'll post it as soon as it arrives.
Enjoy. Comments welcome, as always.

Hi Rick,
Well, it's closing in on 3300 views, a decent number for the short time it's been up (a little more than two months). I'm still planning to work up a Web page for this whole project, with links to all versions on a single page. I'll also point to the publicly available session files and WAV stems. Just need a little free time to do it.
But if we could get the Queen to rep it I wouldn't object...

Will they never stop ?! This mix just in from Glen Macarthur. That's right, the same GMaq of AVLinux fame, on guitar, B3, drums, and tambourine, with Glen's bandmate Pete on bass. Thanks guys, it's another winner !

I might be able to send one, piece by piece, if I can steal it piece by piece. And I'd have to go out of town to do it, my hometown has no Porsche dealership. Sorry.
