Twin 2 demo is fully functional for 30 days and can therefore be used freely. If you have used up the demo time from earlier, contact me with your e-mail address and Fabfilter will fix another period for you.

This is one of the few plugs I've been looking to buy, I'll definitely be participating in this one! Smile

This thing has some range. o.O
Started working on something and it already sounds like I've got two different acoustic instruments, a handful of synths and.. some birds.

color me impressed. Very Happy

This is my first time in the OSC thread.

Things i do not understand:

Why must effects being used be free?
Can i use mastering stuff on my final?

Thing i do not like:

The must to create drums with the synth. Never did that and therefore can no take part.

Welcome to OSC.

The main reason of using only free effects is that people are playing in the same level, nobody takes more advantage than others if using commercial stuff.
You can use mastering effects. Native from your host or free.
But it must be done all in the project, in real time.
Not post processing the final waveform or MP3 render.
This is the way we always did it.

About the percussion. When i came here two years ago i felt the same way. But i have learned too much about percussive synthesis. And the results are priceless. You should give it a try.
Or you can make just an ambient track without percussion.
Or you can use the drum presets from the synth (if any, i didn't check yet)

Come and participate, please.

Have a nice day. Smile
V'ger - Sat Feb 02, 2013 4:21 pm
Making drum sounds can be tricky but this is a challenge like the name says. KVR Music Cafe have monthly competition where there aren't many rules, here it's a bit more tricky. The free effect rule is to keep it fair between the haves and have nots like Irion says.

But finally a chance to try that famous Fabfilter GUI properly and so far everything really feels natural (like it did when I tried Pro-C before). The drag-dropping between knobs to set routings is something all plugins should have.

ShadowsofBirds - Sun Feb 03, 2013 10:40 am
So.. is sequencing a must for the OSC?

I'm just wondering if I can play each track live and record to audio.
Maybe save the presets as proof of one synthyness?

I lost a hard drive and upon re-setup decided to give linux another go. Rather than mess with wine I've got a netbook that I could run an instance of the current vst from (but probably not much more) and then record the audio into ardour..
V'ger - Sun Feb 03, 2013 4:25 pm
Yes that's fine. Normal rules apply to bounces/samples of course.

But how about Linux MultiMedia Studio (LMMS)? It has MIDI and is free.
ShadowsofBirds - Sun Feb 03, 2013 6:17 pm
LMMS looks good but it didn't install right for me. (said it installed but it's not in the menu and search doesn't find it) I'll probably troubleshoot at some point but for now It's Ardour or Qtractor. I know my way around Ardour but I'm liking the look and feel of qtractor (and it has MIDI).

Either way - limitations are fun. Very Happy
bhy - Mon Feb 04, 2013 12:55 pm
Hi there

Are there any restrictions on the use of midi plugins?

Specifically, is it ok to use:

arp4midi (arpeggiator)
kirnu1 (arpeggiator)
hypercyclic (sort of arpeggiator)
stepbeater (drum sequencer)
Contralogic RPS-1 (drum sequencer, provided that I only use midi out to Twin2 and not as a sample player)

Thanks

BHY
V'ger - Mon Feb 04, 2013 6:00 pm
Yes as long as they are free and easily available, all MIDI plugins are fine to use as I can't see how they could possibly alter the sound outside what the synth can do.

So, because you never made drum sounds with a synth, you can not take part? Maybe it's fun to try for once? You should try! And I'm not sure, but there is a big chance that there are already drum sounds included in the factory presets.

Come on, let's do it, it's going to be a lot of fun!! Very Happy

It would be nice if all demo versions of synths were like that. We could have OSCs to infinity Cool
V'ger - Wed Feb 06, 2013 6:41 pm
Indeed, should all be like this, fantastic demo scheme. Fits with their no-fuss copy protection system. Easy to like Fabfilter.

Great synth too, quite surprised by its sound as I always thought this was something made after hours by an effect company.. Wink Of course the GUI was always going to be right up there or above the best, but CPU usage and range are good as well.

Fabfilters first plugin was "One" synthesizer. So they are instruments and effects company Smile

Does it matter what sample rate participants use?

Because hint hint, Fabfilter synths sound way better at 96khz than they do 44/48... Wink
V'ger - Sat Feb 09, 2013 5:14 am
Any sample rate is fine, even your upload doesn't matter as long as SoundCloud accepts it. But how do you do it? Render all at 96khz or each part?

And cheers for the submissions so far Smile

It's simple for me, I use 44.1khz and don't worry about it Smile

If I hear aliasing, I back down on the distortion, or switch to an oversampling plugin.

What about commercial MIDI plugins? Obviously don't affect the sound; not much different than advantages in host sequencer capabilities.
V'ger - Sun Feb 10, 2013 9:53 am
True, but unfair if not all have or can get the plugin.
z.prime - Sun Feb 10, 2013 11:17 am
V'ger wrote:

But also unfair if some get exceptionally good plugins with unfair sequencing abilities with a more expensive sequencer, say, Cubase 7 vs. Reaper. Won't argue the point more... just all sequencers are not created equal and probably possible to simply capture the output of any MIDI plug... so why not just be able to use it?
adagiocm - Sun Feb 10, 2013 11:42 am
I tend to agree with z.prime on this. As a practical matter, it would be impossible to enforce a ban on commercial midi plugins. The final project could just include the output of the plugin and not the plugin itself, and nobody could tell how the midi sequence was created.
jasinski - Sun Feb 10, 2013 6:06 pm
Twin has been in my arsenal for years. Fabfilter makes the best UI for audio plug-ins in the world. That's my opinion anyway. I don't know if I'll have time to get a track together but this contest makes me happy Smile
V'ger - Sun Feb 10, 2013 6:53 pm
There is of course the difference between the DAWs that can affect the final song, but in my opinion mostly with the audio plugins and not so much the MIDI plugins as even free ones can basically do the same as most others. But as with any plugin, the ones inside the DAW are fine to use so that's not an issue.

I don't know what MIDI plugin you're thinking about, but the best arpeggiator is in my opinion Arp!0 and that is free. There's note and chord generators like Hyperion or ChordSpace. Then there's MidiSeq!, MidiMod!, Hypercyclic, Tonespace and... well you get the point.

It's true that besides asking for the project file it's difficult to enforce the use of commercial MIDI plugins, but it's the same for commercial audio plugins as well.

But what MIDI plugins are you thinking about? Is it the newly released Kirnu Cream or Cthulhu, or is it something from Sugar Bytes?
z.prime - Sun Feb 10, 2013 8:09 pm
V'ger wrote:
... or Cthulhu ...

You got it; an absolutely wonderful chord designer...
V'ger - Sun Feb 10, 2013 10:08 pm
Well then if your tracks or phrases start to sound like Bach I will know when to ask for the project file.. Wink http://youtu.be/3t2yD1kX2_w?t=2m30s

But have a look at nicFit Chords, midiChords, ChordSpace, Tonespace, Hyperion and Major sketch pad (link to download in the discussion field http://www.kvraudio.com/product/major_sketch_pad_by_af_kreativt_darhus).

Well, not quite. My point was that with the audio plugins you can ask for the project file and you can tell whether or not the project sounds the same as the original submission, but not so with MIDI plugins. How would you know if z.prime (just to pick on him for bringing up this topic Wink ) gives you a project file that was generated by saving the MIDI output of the plugin, and then deleting the plugin itself from the project?

@Adagiocm: Easier to hide with MIDI plugins of course, but in large part the same with audio ones. It would be difficult to tell if a plugin was replaced now that many freewares are a good match for commercial.

What's best to upload to Soundcloud for quality? WAV? 320kb mp3?
V'ger - Mon Feb 11, 2013 7:29 pm
Full wav as SoundCloud will encode everything to 128kbs mp3 for the player even if it already is in that format, so with wav at least you get only one conversion.

The downloadable file is unchanged = how you uploaded it.

Thank you bh9090. It's not bad is it? I think in context and with a bit of reverb (plus actual playing it into the PCR800 and then tweaking timing in Live) it does the job.

Truepianos is still better for realish piano imho, but when realish sounds are embedded with so many electro-sounds, they ten to sounds more real than they are soloed. Plus the church organ sound kinda sets up an expectation.

There's my 2c. worth. Now to check on other subs...

Exactly.
In any case, i prefer a 320 kbps MP3 file, less space in the hard disc and not much differences in a normal speaker system as i think the most of us have.

Ever since we started with SoundCloud there have been complaints about poor sound quality from the player so everything helps, but i think the biggest factor to get good sound is to leave some headroom (not max out the levels), try for yourself.

@Emanuele: Welcome here. No effects except a sidechain compressor will be appreciated by the purists here.

All the functionality is there in the demo, but it does have a nag sound overlay which may complicate things.

Not to embarrass you, but for those who don't know, Rob's been one of the biggest supporter of the competition with prizes given since very early on, both monthly regular soundsets (which are among the best) and the occasional synths and effects like now, and of course nothing lifts the quality of a competition like good prizes.

So I did a track for this month's OSC and enjoyed the forced limitation, sooo.. I did another one in a different style. I kept going. I saw you could submit multiple entries and hope this isn't seen as spamming the contest or the board. Appologies if it is. I just purchased the FabFilter bundle during the last sale, so this was the first opportunity to get to know Twin. Anyway, here are the tracks.

All done in Ableton Live with the following effects:
Live EQ8, Saturator, Compressor, Limiter, PingPong Delay

Tracks: 20

Added a sneak preview of my coming track PheaX 1.2 to the Twin2Cloud. Just a small fragment of a hopefully very long track to keep me motivated. This still lacks almost everything.

Does anyone know or have you discussed what is the next synth challenge?
I'm thinking about a nice prize here.. what about a copy of U-HE Ace or something from me next time? Is that okay or do you guys want something like Synapse Dune?
Full versions of course.

Thanks

Rob
markheath - Fri Feb 22, 2013 2:58 pm
ok, I've done my entry for this month - Double Infusion. 15x Twin 2, EpicVerb, a few ReaComp, ReaEQ, ReaFIR, TalDubII, ReaXComp, Kjaerhus Classic Limiter.

Twin2 was lots of fun to play with, although my sound programming skills are still woefully poor - all my attempts at designing my own sounds seemed to end as accordians.

Edit: DR is 16

U-he ACE would be better imo. Because there isn't a lite version of it.
There are Dune LE and Dune BE that are more affordable to people.

The next OSC synth is a secret until the last moment.

Thanks Rob for contributing with such donations.
Shit mate, i'm even thinking on participating this month, lol. HiHi
But i can't do it because i'm getting really huge economic problems as some of you know, i'm being smashed by the crysis and unemployment so bad here, i must be creative and i started running my own website to sell my own soundsets as soon as i finish some of them. I hope it will go fine until i get a proper job...

That's my life, fighting so badly to survive, everyday.

Have a nice day, mate. Smile

Hi mate,

Ah so it's all secret till next month then, cool Smile
Anyways a nice synth will be included for the next OSC Challenge. I agree you should make a website and sell sounds you program. My site is down for a few more days as iv'e been busy with other stuff. You can make a good living with sound sets once you have a few available so i fully support you here. I like to see new people showing their skills and NOT all the usual names (me included) taking all the sales.. if you want help or advice then i'm here.

Advice:

Just go for it, sell your sounds and you'll benefit a lot once your out there. Judging by your tracks then i also see no problems with you producing audio demos either, top stuff Smile

Looking forward to the next challenge here.

Hey guys...

how's things going?

Since I'm going to release my next ZebraČ soundset next week, I'm searching for 1 or 2 guys to write a short little demotrack. Also I'm going to Donate one Soundset of choice from this month on! (So, now it is not off-topic anymore Wink) - Isn't that WOW, since I have two Soundsets online, then?! Wink well, everyone has to start somewhere isn't it?

Keep up your good work, guys!!

See you, Bjulin

Well, you can edit a post and let it blank.
Or you could ask a moderator for it, but i don't know if they can't delete just one post.
I know that they can delete a whole thread, though.

on moldavsky - and then there were none
https://soundcloud.com/moldavsky/moldavsky-and-then-there-were

Hello everyone,
Very excited to participate this month!

The host - Magix Samplitude Music Studio 2013;
FX used: JB Ferox - 4, JB Send - 4, JB Smash Pro - 1, Tal Tube - 2, DCAMFreeComp - 3, Metal Mickey Delay - 1;
DAW FX: EQ - 1, tape sim - 4, bitcrusher - 1 (just subtle saturation), delay - 1, compressor - 1, stereo enhancer - 1
Instances of the synth: 9 main voices + 11 layered drums = 20, for the beat an instance of Independence sampler was used only as an additional VSTi host within Samplitude MS.
Dynamic range is 14.

Got a warning comment from RuediRena about hurtful high frequencies going on in the track. Thus, please, be advised: there is indeed some broadband and HF noise; lower the volume and listen at your own discretion at comfortable loudness. The composition wasn't supposed to be a hearing killer or a noise monster, just wanted to add some fragility, perverted tenderness, but sometimes you get what you get. Open for suggestions.

Thanks,

Mikhail

Thank you Irion,

No need to contact one of the moderators. I just did a mistake and I sent the last posting twice. I tried to delete it and I tried to make the second posting blank. Both is not working. Therefore I wrote the question.

I don't think your track has a DR of 5.. it's not insanely compressed or limited so I think it's save to say your DR is higher. Smile

Or am I wrong now.. I'm starting to have doubts now..

To be honest I was surprised too... I checked it with TT DR Offline Meter 1.1 for OSX. I was making the track really fast and I fear it's the lowend energy that I didn't take care of...

Cheers for the submission guys, but is something wrong with SoundCloud or is it just my end where play stops after a second and I have to press play to get it going again? It doesn't matter which track or group, it's the same for the whole SoundCloud and has been that way for about a week now. Unusable really.

Have had the same problem, have to press play 3 or 4 times before it will start.
Just had it where it stopped loading and would go no further, sound cloud was down yesterday, am wondering if they have been messing about with it again..
