If you want to connect directly from a Computer to Receptor you need a Crossover cable. This is a special cable for connecting two computers. Any local Radio Shack would have one.
The Receptor manual has detailed instructions for networking via a crossover.

You need an Ethernet cable. Here is an image:
If you connect Receptor directly to your PC you need a
Crossover Ethernet Cable.
If you have a home local area network, for instance if you have a cable modem or DSL, then you need an Ethernet hub or router and you need a regular Ethernet Cable (not crossover).
It is explained in the manual.

Its really worth it to connect to your receptor because you can use most of the free plugs on the net for your receptor which brings it's usefulness 90 fold! Also, if you have commercial plugins on your PC, you could try simply dropping them in the unsupported plugins folder and see what happens. They may work! See the Unsupported Plugins Compatability thread.
You can also download banks for the plugins that are on Receptor from the net ( like here at KvR or Patch Arena),and drop them in the installer. Then you will have more sounds!
So very worth it to get your Receptor attached to your PC!
