Which control shall I use to change the tempo of arpeggiated instruments. Can I patch that through to a MIDI controller on vkeyb or hardware midi?

Hi.
I answered you privately, but I give the answer into public because perhaps others wait this answer Smile

You can do this, because the tempo is made by the delay of a echo effect. This effect is stored along to the instrument and you can access it by opening the instrument edit window and than click to the Effects button. After this, go to the Echo effect (if you don't see it, change the current FX No. ).
You can control the effects parameters with other programs only if the effects are system or insertion using the NRPNs.
