I just got weighed and measured cos I was registering with a new GP, and the nursey pointed at a little chart based on the Body Mass Index and says 'thats where you are'.
Obese it said.
At 15 stone 12, and a shade under 6ft.

Now that pissed me off a little because, whilst Im not in the best of trim <cough>, Im actually only five pounds over the weight Ive normally sat at since I was 23, when I was fit as hell and doing a lot of weight training every week. My weight, in the past 15 years or so, has hardly changed at all, it just shift from fat to muscle and back. Im definitely porkier than usual at the mo, but if thats the way that BMI thing is set up no wonder they're always going on about how many people are obese these days. You'd have to spend all your week vomiting to be otherwise.
I'm told they made those tables up in the 50's just as the UK got off rationing, by the way.

To get into their 'normal' range I'd have to be under thirteen stone, which I havent been since I was a f**king skinny fifteen year old. I could get into 'Overweight' on their chart, by losing half a stone, but I'd have to become anorexic to get down to 13 f**king stone.

Feh.

That standardised 'everybody categorised the same' shit pisses me off. Im relatively broad, and relatively 'stocky', or so people seem to imply, and seemingly with pretty heavy bones (I cant float, negative boyancy). But hey, one-size-fits-all, dont it.

Oh well, Im on anti-inflammatories now, cos of a f**ked ankle(*), so Im supposed to avoid alcohol. That oughtta keep a 30 or 40 thousand calories out my diet for the next month Wink

(*) Which is why I cant walk that far, and put on that extra five sodding pounds in the first place.
Armadillo - Fri Jun 24, 2005 1:34 am

just kidding mate Smile

I've been 76-78kg most of my adult life, it doesn't matter if I go to the gym, eat more or less, it stays the same whether it's fat or muscles I've got hanging from my bones Shrug

it frustrates a lot of people when they go to the gym every day and not see any weight loss.. of course it's just fat being replaced with muscle
whyterabbyt - Fri Jun 24, 2005 2:31 am
S'okay, its not like I give a toss. But having known a lot of people, particularly lasses, but blokes as well, who have had real (serious) problems as a result of trying to make their weight 'acceptable' seeing a chart like that (in a modern healthcare centre) agglomerate a whole range of sizes, shapes and physiques into four basic ranges of 'Underweight' 'Normal', 'Overweight', and 'Obese' or whatever pisses me off somewhat.

Especially since all the actual information on the BMI admits it has major limitations. And yet they still point to the chart and say 'thats you'....

that's what all people are for them.. statictics, charts, numbers and equations Confused never mind actually looking at reality. It's a pitty most people have never learned how to do that, and therefor so many people live with low self-asteem and feeling frustrated

Haven't weighed myself in years, but I'd guess 78 kg, so roughly 172 lbs or 12st 2 for those without metric. 5'8" height.

Could stand to lose a bit off the middle section. Too much sitting and typing lately (damned sitting and typing jobs). I luckily have limited my girth to the lovehandles and have avoided what my sister-in-law refers to as editor's ass (she being a former book editor).

ResonantOrder - Fri Jun 24, 2005 7:26 am
5'8'', 150lbs. I'm self-employed and work my ass off. It's a combination of physical labor, and I watch my diet fanatically. I eat whatever I want, but I balance all the meat with an equal amount of vegetables. No salt, caffeine, sugar (or crappy substitutes). I eat as much fruit as I can every night for dinner. I've maybe killed a six-pack and a bottle of wine if you add up all the alcohol I've consumed in the past seven years. But it's not like I had much of a choice. I was born with a heart defect that almost killed me. I was never supposed to live past 18, I'll be 34 in less than a week.

The hard work and diet that I've been following for the past seven years seems to be paying off. I've had people who knew me ten years ago say that they don't recognize me at all. I was carded twice last week just buying spraypaint for my work.
