Since this really useful thread started about VSTinstruments, I thought it'd be hightime to start the same list for effects. However, since commercial effects are almost all completely out of my pricerange, therefore I've never had them and thus cannot credibly compare them, I figured we could classify them by *types*, instead of by their commercially available counterparts.

So, here comes *one* proposed scheme. If you find it worthy, please feel free to rework it or contribute to it as you see fit.

IMPORTANT NOTES:

a) Unfortunately, I don't know the authors of all the effects, since some of them have disappeared, others don't have any identifier built into the plug, and a good portion didn't come with text or help files or any copyright notice. If you know the author, please be kind and add that info after the plugin in brackets (and maybe a hyperlink too?)

b) Some of these plugins are shareware, donationware, or crippleware; and some have been probably removed from the public domain, or discontinued alltogether. I tend to get rid of those that are (I either pay for them, or uninstall them in due course), but some - like the Blueline - are such that they have stayed around on my system. If I mentioned anything on this list that unwittingly infringes upon someone's copyright (although I sincerely doubt it, since I don't have any musicracks), please be kind and let me know, and I will remove it ASAP. I'm NOT encouraging any copyright infringement, implied or factual.

c) This method of classification is at least 50% subjective. Most (all?)flanger/phaser is also a chorus and vice versa; most filterbanks also fit into distortion; and pretty much anything Tobybear does defies classification. Shocked Very Happy To my ears, and based on my experience, hopwever, this is the kind of slotting that made sense. If you're more knowledgeable, please feel free to re-structure it according to the proper lines.

*sigh*

again my beloved filterbank was forgotten on the lists.. (i even posted a link on the freebie thread)

..is it the gui? it sounds good to me.. i dont understand why no one likes it.. hmm.. Confused

or do u ppl just skip my messages after you read who wrote it.. Shocked

hmmmmmmmmmm.
Dingo865 - Sun Oct 13, 2002 10:51 am
Hi VitaminD,

It's there now - but y'know, with the same effort you put into this message you could also have added it to the list, with a hyperlink to boost... Wink I don't have the link handy, BTW, and you didn't include it in the textfile...
VitaminD - Sun Oct 13, 2002 11:20 am
i already posted a link on the other thread.. so :p

thanks though Wink

I've never heard of Tardis and I'm really interested in stereo enhancer plugins or similar. Anyone got any info or a link?
VitaminD - Sun Oct 13, 2002 4:20 pm
after about 30 minutes of looking around for a website on tardis... i thought to myself.. 'doh' i already have it.. Laughing

Can I suggest adding CamelPhatFree (our freeware Compressor/Distortion effect). Its dead simple to use but it has a nice sound - someone here at KVR (can't remember who) said it was 'the perfect fuzz box'. It could go under either your Compression or Distortion categories. Maybe its best under distrortion.

Thanks
Ben

I'll root through my effects when I get home and let you know if I find anything else useful to mention.

There's definitely at least one mda Delay (DubDelay), and TobyBear's Shocker was free for a while., dont know if that counts.

Thank you, Guys'n'Gals,

It's been updated to reflect your tipps.

Cant see much more. Ive probably missed a couple though.
whyterabbyt - Mon Oct 14, 2002 11:28 am
Oh yeah, and Izotope Vinyl.

And mda Degrade and RefX Trasher as distortions. (Both decimators, really)

Whereat anna wotsit?
mistertoast - Mon Oct 14, 2002 12:07 pm
Shapee--a wild sound thing that takes two inputs and gives one output. I like to put a voice and a instrument together. You have to mess around for a while to get the coolest effects.

Sort of a super vocoder. Check out the demos.

Impressive list. Now we really need to know which are the best ones.

mmm... not easy.

Can somebody suggest a way to evaluate a Delay or a Reverb other than listen and decide what you like ?

Would somebody figure how to WRITE a plugin which does that ?

Hey ScuzzPhut... is there a new build of Scuzzphut 6 yet? Last I checked, it wasn't working in Plogue Bidule. Has that been rectified yet?

Thanks,

Hi Herrydan,

Thanks for your interest in scuzzphut6. Very Happy I have a few other bugs to fix in scuzzphut6, after which I'll be releasing the updated version (including a new skin ) on my website. I'll announce it on KvR , too.

I have already made the change to get it working in Bidule, though , so if you want to get it before I release the complete version, drop me an email and I'll be more than happy to oblige.

I love scuzzphut6, but it seems to cause me a lot of grief in Orion. It seems like everytime I use it in a song, and come back to open the song it causes Orion to do some illegal op, and has to close. Has anyone else had problems with these two? It really bums me out, cause I love scuzzphut, and I love Orion and I don't know which one to quit using! Shocked

Thanks Opia for the plug. By the way, if you like Hexaline, watch out for the modified 12-delays version (called Dodecaline) that will also be available soon (for free) to registered users !

How about the SimulAnalog Guitar Suite?

http://www.hitsquad.com/smm/programs/SimulAnalog/download.shtml

As championed by such artists as our own Donkey.

Should go under the Speaker/Amp Simulator section.

Good idea though Dingo!

Acidman,

List updated. Thanks for bringing it to my attention!

Also, I tried to put up a poll for delays here http://www.kvr-vst.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=10135. I couldn't fit all into the poll, so I had to cut some lesser known or used from the poll list. I also cut the Blueline since it's shareware, although its status (webpage seems gone, development seems to have stopped some time ago, etc.) is dubious at the moment.

No its not but hexaline and frohmage should be somewhere in the top 20

I'm curious about morphone.I see a couple people put it in their list but I don't see it on tobybears site.
Dingo865 - Wed Oct 23, 2002 7:29 am
Opiadream,

Morphone falls somewhere in-between freeware and shareware. It was available for a limited time for free download from Toby as a Christmas gift (if I remember correctly?). In any case, a very functional (free) version was still part of his MODBAG bundle the last time I checked, and an expanded version is available for purchase.

Toby, if you read this and I'm spreading desinformation, please correct me! Very Happy

Just wanted to update and be fair, scuzzphut6 is now working fine in Orion Platinum 3.51. Don't know if it was the update to Orion (I had been using 3.0), or if it was scuzzphut's fault at all!?? But anyway, it seems happy now, and that's good cause this is a cool plug.

Heh, it is fun to see folks try to figure out how to categorize our effects... Smile Looks pretty good to me, although I see that Transverb got added as a reverb and, despite its admittedly deceptive name, it is not a reverb in any way, more it's a combination of delay, pitch-shifting, and feedback. I sure don't know about BO, but I guess maybe delay is kind of accurate. I would also add of ours Skidder in the gate section, Polarizer in the distortion section, RMS Buddy in visual aid, Monomaker in the Stereo section. And in the Equalizer section, our plugin is called EQ Sync (just for your info).
Dingo865 - Thu Oct 24, 2002 7:27 am
Thanks for the info - keep it coming!!!

Again, feel free to supply links (in all honesty, I just don't have the time to hunt them all down), suggestions, corrections, etc. I'm thinking about putting this up on my website as a more comprehensive list, perhaps with feedback/banks/whatever.

BTW, I know there are several sites already that do a marvellous job in this area, but I find that they are generally outdated, and there's usually very little explanation concerning the plugs. In any case, I cannot see how this thread would hurt anybody... Embarassed Laughing

Toda,

Could you enlarge (widen) the GUI of this filter a bit? In Orion Platinum, it's so narrow that the host's MIDI Options at the top of the window don't fit onto the screen, consequently I cannot set it to MIDI receive at all...

Uh, Brittnel, 'tis great stuff, but... I'd REALLY appreciate of you could classify them somehow...? I mean, you don't need to follow the structure I set up in the very first message, but I do need *some* structure. In all honesty, I don't have the time to try them all, that's why I need your help.

Thanks in advance,

Uh, Give me a *bit* of a break on the *some* part... I could've posted names or URLs only.

At least this way, you get:
a) What it's called
b) Where to find it
c) Enough information to *easily* find descriptions (You don't have to try them all... Most are either title-defined, or have descriptions on their respective links)

Honestly, anything more would have been exactly what you have in the first post (which I don't have time to do at the moment either). I figured It'd be cool to lend a quick hand with what time I had.

Either way, I'll try and do what I can. Maybe after work...

*sigh*

Dingo865,

don't forget the FishFillets:

BlockFish - compressor
FloorFish - gate / enhancer
SpitFish - de-esser

available at DigitalFishPhones

and while you list More Feedback Machine in a "works for free"-thread (which I have no problem with), please edit my URL to it:

www.u-he.com/mfm/

BTW it's not really a delay, it is merely a multi-effect (most feedback I get is use as modulateable filter/chopper)

Cheers,

Wink Urs

The Tiny God plugins Throbber and Breather should go here. Both free Windows VSTs, both are basically LFO-driven filters -- probably should go under Distortion/Mangling, since they're sort of unpredictable, though Filter/Filterbank would be appropriate as well.

sz-m0dul80r should go here too.
It's a phase modulation plugin VST for windows.
Definately a mangler.

Download from here

It's free but only to sectionz members, seeing as membership is free it's still a free plugin.

Is there a free wah-wah effect somewhere?
Or any of the mentioned fx that can sound like one, maybe flanger or phaser or?
amoebe - Sat Jan 25, 2003 12:46 pm
You could try the excellent Floorfish -fishfillet package- from
www.digitalfishphones.com. Press the listen knob and then rotate the detect freq. That's the closest to a wah I can find.

I was looking over the spectral analysis tool and saw the German bs_spectrum, but its Mac only. Any of these free VST plugs could be Windows, Mac, BeOS, Linux, etc, so lets label it.

Everyone is making free sound mangling tools, but how about a free spectral analysis tool (ala Waves) so you can see what you are doing, especially on the end of your master chain?

There must be some SynthEdit masters sitting around doing nothing (except reading KvR forums)...

Nope, they are not!
A Wah boosts a specific freqeuncy range more like a peaking filter ste to a positiv gain. It seems like you've never used a real WahWah.

Arcane Device has a long list of free FX (though made with SE), at least one is worth mentioning here

Echotank XL

My friend bumped into this very nice 3-line delay unit, complete with filters & assignable LFOs, featuring cross-feeding of the delay lines Very Happy ...kind of poor man's OhmBoyz, but making even freakier stuff. And with good presets, recommended for those who seek a special delay.

Girls, girls, don't fight. You're talking about the same thing. The high Q or resonance is the peaking part of the peaking filter. "Feedback" isn't really the best term for it though it does involve a feedback loop in the circuit or algorithm implementing the filter.
patchworkcat - Fri Mar 21, 2003 7:08 pm
Thanks Borogove, feeling a little gyred and gimbled! Laughing
Having ransacked the old VSTs I might even suggest TK's 4filters- kind of 'wholesome' .

f**king missed this, what's a 'peaking' filter? It really doesn't matter what you call it- it sounds like a low pass filter you twat.

It's one of the common filters everyone knows: Lowpass, highpass, bandpass, bandreject, shelving and peaking.

commonly shelving and peaking filters are used in parametric EQs. While a lowpassfilter filters out the frequencys above the cutoff-frequency (the friquency, where the signal is attenuated by 3dB) a peaking filter boosts or cutts a specific frequency band. If you use a small bandwidth and a high gain-factor (>= 18dB) and make it's center frequency follows the envelope, you did a WahWah.

To check this ou can try it: Generate white noise, path it through your wahwah and analyse the signal that coms out. My one behaves very much like I told you. The high frequencys are still present, while a small frequency rage is booste a lot. If you don't have a wahwah you can check Amplitube or Sinositus Wahwah. All of the behave the same way.

Oh and what is a twat? All I found is:
(vulgar) external female genitalia, vulva; woman as a sex object (Slang)

That wouldn' be very politely of you Wink

Just to let you know,

I tried to update the list again. Some of the links I received didn't work, and some I cannot figure out where to slot, so I didn't post them. Sorry for the delay, but I had some other priorities to get through... Embarassed

Also, I would like to ask again: before you suggest something, please check the list (a simple Ctrl+f should do it) as to whether it appears already - and if it is possible, please post a link as well as the suggested category. I know little to nothing about some 90% of these effects, and I don't want to make an even bigger idiot out of myself by posting, say, a de-esser under 'Visual Aids"... Laughing

Thank you for everybody's contribution!

It turns out that most of the links I posted didn't work because this f*cking phpBB software recognizes closing brackets as such only when you post the original message, but upon subsequent edits it automatically adds the brackets to the bloody URL... Shocked Mad

Anyway, sorry - it's been all corrected now!
