I'd like to be able to load any .wav drum loop, play it back and have the program automatically randomize the drum hits in the loop. Does any app like this exist? Thanks.

Stylus RMX

try Tuareg from BramBos.com

It won't randomize it, but it will allow you to drag the individual beats from a visual representation of the loop into another visual representation of the loop directly below it. So it's quick and dirty and you can export it very quickly from there, and then just continue to juggle things around. You can make presets from your new ordering of the beats and then apply those to new loops. So, in a sense, with a new loop context, its just as good as randomization.

btw, I don't know if randomization is a great thing for drums. You might stumble across something interesting, but there's really no substitute for intentionality. However, if you want to spend some cash, Stylus RMX has an intelligent beat randomizer that you can play and set the range for what it's going to alter, etc.

Liveslice. It will automatically slice up your loops, and you can assign a probability of triggering to each slice, which is much more useful than pure randomness.
Incomplete list of my gear: 1/8" audio input jack.

freebie effects like SupaTrigga and LiveCut might be something worth checking out.

i second Stylus. it sounds exactly like what you want.

I forgot: Tuareg2 does have a random button on the slicer.

i second LiveSlice - http://www.kvraudio.com/get/1952.html

if you don't need a big library and just wanna use it on your own loops it'll be perfect, as it has a very reasonable price and has lots of features.

this is the tool i was looking for a long time. you really should check out the demo - here's a direct link to the dev's site http://livelab.dk/downloads.php

Allow me to add that LiveSlice has two different modes of randomization. One simply swaps the individual hits leaving the positions unchanged, the other rearranges them on after the other avoiding gaps.
Furhtermore, LiveSlice was designed to make it easy to visually identify and rearrange the hits manually to fine tune the arrangement.

Those of you that are curious, but don't want to install another demo, have a look at the flash demos here: http://livelab.dk/liveslice_gallery.php - then go and install the demo :-) The limitations are pretty generous by the way, so you can actually use the demo without registering.

Live slice looks fine, i have been on the website, but i can not see if it allows stereo files (on the flash demo, very audio files is stereo) ?
and could you tell us what are the demo restrictions ?
thank you !

It's a VST effect just like SUPPATRIGGA you can drop it into any audio track or after any synth etc so you don't load loops into it you pass audio through it much like a delay effect as an insert etc.
Which gives it alot more scope as you can dice vocals on the fly and all other sorts of goodies.
And yes it processes either mono or stereo signals .

EDIT - Ooops sorry I was refering to LIVE-CUT and SUPPATRIGGA here which you may want to check out also.

May I also suggest sharpenning your chops in the old skool technique of cut and paste editing.
Yes I know it's manual and it takes some work but the results are 100% worthwile and give you lots of personalised control also - your DAW is an Audio editor after all so learn to use those sorts of features to your advantage also

LiveSlice can import wav files in mono or stereo, 8-32 bits. It can even import / export slices from / to ACIDized wave files (rx2 import is planned).
The demo has one restriction: when you re-load a song all the loops are replaced by a demo loop. No time limits, no noises or dropouts.

It's a VST effect just like SUPPATRIGGA
edit: I see you corrected your post while I was writing this :-)

You must have LiveSlice confused with Smartelectronix LiveCut.

LiveSlice is a VSTi, and although I'm currently working on recording audio input in real time, so it can be used as an effect, it's currently an instrument.

With the new input recording, however, it will have some similarities to supatrigga / livecut, but with the possibility to have total control of the output (midi sequence randomizations, reverse, pitch changes).

Smartelectronix comes out w/ some of the coolest stuff... Thank god for those guys.
