If you want predominantly VA, lots of different filters, some alternative synthesis methods, I'd say to look at VazMod.

If you like both VA and PM synthesis I would say Tassman.

Any modular will have a steep learning curve. Based on what I've seen, Tassman has a smaller learning curve than Reaktor, since the components are at a higher level.

If you want to roll your own, you can also look at synthedit (somewhat high-level) or synthmaker (tends towards the lower-level components).
