Particle synth ( Pocas)can produce some strange textures and I did a bank for it( but its on PA, so we have to wait until its open again)
and of course Krakli's stuff( Cygnus, vurtbox) and NuSoftings modeling stuff.

yeah forgot to mention krakli stuff!
richman2 but cygnus also i remember was able to create a convincing retro sci-fi texture with it
thanks for the heads-up on sophia! wich is quite unique
and mr.alias a very funny noize machine
let me add Lazy Snake to the party, useful for electric keyboards and retro bell-like sounds

i was trying to ask this very question in the noobies forum. i've made notes on everything said here but have already liked EVERYTHING by tweakbench and the one demo that i liked best would have to be papaya because i like percussive sounds best and steel drums are so happy sounding.
http://www.tweakbench.com/mp3demo/papaya.mp3
hmmm.... i missed the delay llama demos when i first checked the links at gersic.com's VST freeware portal. http://www.gersic.com/plugins/index.php?daCat=-2
it reminds me of another synth that was based on vocal formants, but i can't remember what it was called. it isn't at gersic, so it must not be freeware. i'll have to get back with that one. i should have it written down somewhere. along similar lines,
voc-one by simple-media uses analogue synthesis of vocal sounds
http://www.simple-media.co.uk/music/mp3 ... urning.mp3
a few not mentioned that grabbed my attention included:
kuso synth ver 0.1 tone deaf
http://www.g200kg.com/music/kusosynth.mp3
smart electronix's DMI hammer which i've been mistakenly calling hammerhand because of the name of this demo
http://dmi.smartelectronix.com/mp3/Hammerhand.mp3
simple-media http://www.simple-media.co.uk/music/vst ... tringthing
has some fun sims and their spook-keys theramin sim is different
http://www.simple-media.co.uk/music/mp3 ... eramin.mp3
but then again, super string thing sounds pretty flexible
i can't remember what this link is for. somehow it was in the x-hip demos. i'm on dialup now, so i'll have to check it the next time in the library. it's something by simple-media anyways
http://www.simple-media.co.uk/music/mp3 ... esmoke.mp3
x-hip, like tweakbench, neonempyr, and darkware nintendo/atari sims, can do some fun cheesy (but hi-fi) sounds like these
http://xhip.cjb.net/xhip/audio/beats.mp3
and
http://xhip.cjb.net/xhip/audio/09.mp3
as well as more conventional synth tones. it's pretty amazing for a unit that has such a simple interface. there's more demos at
http://xhip.cjb.net/xhip/audio.cgi
and finally,
rez synth is a pretty different sounding synth based on comb filters
before:
http://destroyfx.smartelectronix.com/au ... iginal.mp3
after:
http://destroyfx.smartelectronix.com/au ... zsynth.mp3
man... KVR logged me out as i did the research to gather all of these demos. good thing i thought ahead to copy and paste everything.
for fun... click on more than one link at a time and create a wierdness mix on the fly.

little critters VSTi
if this one isn't exotic, then i don't know
it is like having a virtual bag full of
bugs, grasshoppers, crickets..etc etc etc..
very nice sounds
great for movies or chillout music
