The old MDA piano, its old, simple but with a little reverb it still does the trick!

While not a VST, if you have Kontakt, etc then Sampletekk has a group buy on until 2/3 that has already maxed at 50% off. In addition, Sampletekk is now the distributor for Post Musical Instruments.
I've bought from both vendors, it's nice to see them under one "roof" now, so to speak.

Balthor Grand Piano is the best sounding and playing freeware grand piano sim I've found, and I tried them all.

What do you think of Sampletekk's pianos? I consider buying an all purpose one, so it's either the real big one for me or the Steinway (black) medium ambient one.dougsyo wrote:While not a VST, if you have Kontakt, etc then Sampletekk has a group buy on until 2/3 that has already maxed at 50% off. The latter one seems to offer a lot value for the money, but the big one just sounds sooo sweet from the specifications

Did it just now. The difference is so obvious you could kill an elephant with. The free sampletank piano is no match at all. Listen to the fast part app. 30 seconds into the piece - even with my small laptop speakers the free sampletank (as much as I like this sampler) piano rattles and clicks, whilst the NI piano rolls and sounds.The_Cresta wrote:you may wish to listen to a comparison between Akoustik Piano(349$) and Sampletank2 Piano (free...): click here

in most cases you will never notice the difference (ex: as background piano in a pop piece...), and I think that most of those who are reading will not use a VST to perform a classical concert
So, if you really need a good sampled piano to perform astonishing classical parts, then there are very good payware choices (Akoustik is just one of them), but if you don't really need that and just want a good piano sound to fit into your pop/hiphop/numetal, then you can have decent results even without spending your beloved ca$h...

I only have 7cgJr and Rain Piano from Sampletekk, and I like them a lot (I admit I go back and forth between 7cgJr and SR's C7).rendelius wrote:What do you think of Sampletekk's pianos? I don't need the heavy level of sampling that TBO and its counterparts need, so I can't speak for them. From a quality point of view, I'm sure they're comparable, but the TBO has a LOT more detail.

I agree with most of what you say. However, one should consider that a piano is an instrument with lots(!) of possibilities of expression, and if you go from pp to ff in just four steps, you will loose a lot of the potential of the instrument. I agree that if you are producing pop or rock, you don't really need a full blown piano sample set, but once you use it as an insrument to EXPRESS something, every cheapo solution will fall flat.The_Cresta wrote:in most cases you will never notice the difference (ex: as background piano in a pop piece...), and I think that most of those who are reading will not use a VST to perform a classical concert

Try PianoTeq, it blows away all the others. And if you're a good piano player - unlike me - you'll know how to tweak the settings to make it sound even better.
