With the quality of that video it's hard for me to tell for sure - but I seem to remember it being a CZ-1000. It can't be a CZ-101 because they didn't have full-sized keys.
Yep - it's a CZ-1000.

Unfortunately, Rock School does not appear to be out on DVD. The link above points to a blog where someone was selling DVDs made from home VHS tapes on eBay - of course the item has been removed from sale.

Out of curiousity, I checked the BBC shop website to see if by chance the shows were for sale in any format, and it appears that they are not.

BTW, I live in the US and Rock School played on our local PBS station here in the Detroit Area.

Btw, if you're into shows about electronic instruments, there's an IPTV series just started at www.sonicstate.com (http://www.sonicstate.com) about the "Top20 Synths of all time...ever" ;-)

Check it out here:-

Man, I can't believe that 20 years later I remembered that melody line he comes up with perfectly. Thanks for the link.

Not only that, but I could remember almost all of the little tunes the presenters played in the studio, as well as most of the stuff done in the interviews. But then in those days, video of synthesisers on TV was kind of a rare event, so I watched them all to death...

Have a peek at http://www.sonicstate.com/top20/ (http://www.sonicstate.com/top20/) ... it's a 'TV' show ... about synths ;-)

Sorry to mention it twice, but it's the sort of thing you might like. Has interviews with Ade Utley from Portishead, and keyboard guys from the Cure and Goldfrapp.

So did I...
I remember reading an interview with Eno where he said he had a lot of conversations with Yamaha trying to get them to change the interface to make the DX7 more intuitive. He said that like 90% of the DX7s returned for repair had no user presets programmed. The Yamaha people pointed to that as evidence that their users didn't want to program the synth. Eno pointed to it as proof the interface inhibited programming.

A close friend of mine had a DX100 that we got really familiar with. I remember putting it in Edit mode and playing it like that so I could select a parameter and alter it while performing.

They actually were capable of incredible sounds, but you had to really dig in and try things that were counterintuitive. 95% or more of the DX7 sounds I've heard were nowhere near as complex as the DX100 sounds we were programming. And the factory presets totally reeked.

But it could be put to service sound-wise if one tried.

Then again, tonight on my local public TV program we're having . . . Jewel in concert!

emdot,

The Ramsey Lewis series only is broadcast on the HD channel for public TV in the Detroit area - it's not on the analog broadcast.

Check your local public TV listings to see if your local public TV station broadcasts any digital channels as well as the analog signal. Your cable TV company might not even offer these to you.

I use a UHF antenna into a used Hughes DirecTV box that has an ATSC tuner built in to get the digital channels that are broadcast over the air.

Our local public TV station broadcasts 4 different signals:
1. The normal analog signal
2. An HD channel where they feature shows like the Ramsey Lewis show - Widescreen format 16:9 (much better quality audio as well)
3. A standard digital channel which mirrors #1, 4:3 format
4. A 'Create' channel that broadcasts home improvement and craft shows 24/7 in standard digital 4:3 format.

I think this is actually pretty common for most of the larger market public TV stations.

Over the air digital TV is a recent new 'hobby' (OK, obsession) that I have.

:hihi: Don't have cable. Never will. I'm no Luddite, but I know overpriced crap when I see it. :tu:

And my antenna is about 30 years old and getting smaller and smaller with every wind storm. So even if I could get over the air digital (and if my TV would play it, which it doesn't) I doubt my antenna would be picking it up.
