The LA-50 was not free. It was voluntarily removed from Binary Music's Kontakt Instrument Line after a comment by Eric Persing on Facebook.

Eric Persing Oy…..yet another company wholesale ripping off my work and the work of other talented sound designers from the 80s. Unlike many other kinds of emulations of analog synths, unless they have a specific license from Roland to do this product, it's not legal with sample-based instruments. (it's not legal to sample and redistribute sample-based products that have copyrighted samples and all of the D-50 stuff is copyrighted by Roland). As a highly respected news site, I wish you guys wouldn't promote illegal products like this without ensuring that they are legitimate.
Anyone who can make you believe absurdities can make you commit atrocities.

Well, some others..?

well you'll have to wait a bit longer
as it happens, i'm building a kind of LA synth right now, inch by inch.
it is quite well advanced really. i have no idea if it is going to actually
sound like one, but i think i've got the principles working ok. i'm
terrible at finishing projects, so i might have to cut it down a bit.
dunno, see how it goes. been a bit chaotic here lately. if you'll
settle for a punked-up rough cut one, i'll sort out a demo.
:dog: bam, now everyone else is going to do one...

the difficulty with doing a 'proper' modern Roland synth is the
performance articulation. note that hardly any VST plguns have
proper key- and velocity-scaling, zones etc. free ones anyway.
please point out the ones that do if you can think of them.
this is the main difference between software and hardware
at this point. and you don't even get these parameters on most
modern hardware, either.(for argument's sake..)

thinking about the evolution of Roland products after the MKS series:
they just went, right: 4 osc lines - partials - and have stuck with that in
everything since, pretty much, gradually building the number of parameters.
my pc is on its knees handling the synthedit project, it slows it right down
now, frustrating. then you get to a stage when you can't face looking at it
any more, and get sidetracked into starting another one.
