Bert Koor, thanks ... I had initially overlooked Moonfish due to the fact it had only 3 tracks. However, I tried it and found that, tracker style, it is possible to place more than one sound into each track ..... and since a drummer only has two arms and two legs, and very rarely use them all at once :D .... Moonfish becomes a feasible option!

The only drawback I can find, other than it crashing on me, ( probably because I did something stupid  ), is that like Hammerhead, it doesn't start/stop with the spacebar. For live work, fiddling around with a mouse to hit a button is not ideal. Looks a handy piece of kit though, and something I will add to my recommendations.

Hotstepper has just become another candidate! Its heavy on CPU though, and yet it carries on playing steadily when I open up other windows etc. I think if I take out some of the active samples ( 12 tracks is way beyond what is required here. ) then it might lighten up a bit on CPU.... not sure.

OK, I think thats enough for one day,

+1 for idrum and there are some nice skins for sale for it too :) (not mine and not a plug)

idrum is like orion drumrack (not as powerful but almost).

i quite like it a lot. it is sort of a virtual MPC it actually has swing and groove controls too. quite great.

I've just started working on the "10 year anniversary edition" of MoonFish (for kicks & giggles) - I'll make sure spacebar is implemented.

Other suggestions also welcome! :P

Ha ha ..... Brambos, I only just a few seconds ago posted in Berts 'Lightweight tracker/beatbox' thread asking you to have a look over here! .... I come back, and I find you've been there, done that!! :hihi:

Look forward to the new Moonfish!

Post

Just tried out iDrum ....Great machine! Looks a lot like beatcraft. Love the way each instrument can have its own sample set, changeable during playback ... yup, great machine! .... Way beyond where I need to work from at this point in time, but very nice indeed!

Played a bit more with Moonfish .... its really growing on me :) ... takes me back a bit to old Atari days with noisetracker ... ie, arranging samples on a limited number of lines. Very cool! ... and amazingly tweakable for all thats there! However, it crashed again :( .... it doesn't like having its start/stop buttons confused ... ie. when in song mode, dont touch the pattern play button, and vice versa ....

Brambos, I didnt come across a sample vol control, .... that would be a massive feature ... even if it meant the amount of samples per project has to be limited.

Personally, I like to see all the tracks rather than one at a time, be cool if that option could be enabled/disabled.

Dont be tempted to go beyond 4 tracks, Thats more than enough for a rhythm/drum/beat machine.

.... are we there yet? :D

I'll just throw this out there:

He could use this with any vst, literally takes one second to set up, just rename the exe to match the dll... plus it doesn't require any fancy asio

OK, I'm back at mission control. The DrumRoll only uses about 7% of my CPU here. That other sequencer might be part of a DC submission, but it doesn't really seem any better. I'll keep working on the drum synths and have a look if I can get the CPU down. If we're ineligible for the DC I'll stick it up here.
Cheers

Post

Cool nix808! ... 7% CPU is more than an acceptable! .... when i ran it i was looking at around 60% .... maybe I'll try it again after a restart and see what happens.

Re. 'Hydrogen' I think I was a bit unfair in my comments. I've played around a bit more with it, and it has climbed in my estimation! Samples can be loaded, gain, eq, pitch applied to each, gain can also be adjusted per beat, and with 12 samples active, it is still CPU friendly. Very easy to use!

The mixer has 4 auxilliaries for plugin fx, but these appear to be disabled in the free version .... Another fine machine!

Post

After further farting about with the progs already mentioned, and based on the criteria already stated in this thread, I have reached my conclusions.

Best freebie ..... Hydrogen! lack of available decent effects lets the prog down slightly, but impressive nonetheless!

However, I will be recommending that my colleague spends a a mere $39 on Beatcraft. Absulutely perfect for the job in hand, and a whole lot more as well. If I required a standalone drummer for myself, I would have paid for it by now .... in fact, I'm gonna feel such a sense of loss when my trial runs out that I'm gonna struggle hard not to find some excuse to buy it!

Only prob now is that I might struggle to arrange a meeting with said colleague before my trial period runs out! May have to write to Acoustica for an extension :)

Thanks to everyone for their contributions to this thread. :tu:

Just gotta add a BIG +1 to Acoustica for promptly sorting a trial period extension of Beatcraft! :D

See http://www.powerfx.com/plugins/miracle
It appears there's a free version http://www.powerfx.com/files/MiracleFREE.exe and a pay version ("add to cart" link)
We are the KVR collective. Resistance is futile. You will be assimilated. Image

OK, cool! I am fairly certain I have enough options now, but I'll take a look for sure!
