I know very well this type of bass-only sound. The kick example I've highlighted isn't one of them.TheoM wrote: Would you like me to post some examples of things peaking the bass end that sound tinny?
Poor old FXPansion Geist and Tremor.

It's completely possible to get nice kicks out of Tremor that don't sound harsh or boxy or blown out. Great for techno or any other kind of electronic music when you want something that deviates from the status quo.

Hi Raphael,himalaya wrote:Sam,
I have some kicks for you but will post them later as I need to go out with the kids now.
When you post the kicks is there any way I could convince you to provide the preset files too? Thanks.

I am saying it's tinny and thin and SHIT sounding, There is a difference. Gosh i really have to get out of this topic. I am really really sorry i even said i didn't like something.himalaya wrote:Theo, have you missed that 200Hz peak that gives the kick a nice definition and punch? That bass kick is not just *bass* (like an 808-style 'boom' kick). It's a 'full-range' kick. It sits nicely in the low end and in the mids. Besides you assert that Tremor has no bass whatsoever, and yet there it is. I can hear it and I can see it. You don't?
Out.. last message, Cheers. and respect always Him, you know how much i love your work so please PLEASE do not take this personally as it has nothing to do with you.

Ohh, I'm not taking it personally, Theo. Far from it.
I'm simply wanting to learn, and I am learning. About different kicks, how people perceive sound and how they describe it.

I use Geist way more than Tremor... I prefer layering drum samples tbh, and Geist is class for its workflow. Love it!
That said, my m8 uses Tremor quite a bit, and we were examining some of the kicks he'd made on the monitors and analyzer. They sounded excellent... So, while I'm not really into drum syntheses myself, from what I've seen it's a very nice tool.
In fact, I don't think FXpansion have done anything that I didn't like so far. I felt the interface for Cypher was quite cluttered but it's a very nice soft synth.
Looking forward to see what's on the horizon from them.

Hi Sam,
Here it is. There are differences in all cases, but not of the magnitude that would reveal some inferior quality in Tremor. You hear the kick extracted from your original file followed by my Tremor emulation, 1-2-1-2, etc.

Drumspillage example 2 - I couldn't do a successful emulation here. Once I got the attack right, the 'tail' was not bright enough, and conversely, when I got the tail right the attack suffered. Perhaps it just reveals different tuning of the parameters in both synths.

The good thing is, because of this little exercise I have lots of very nice, clean and punchy kick drums. Ha! I sense a new sound bank coming.

Awesome! When you release it can you include a section like, "Special thanks to Sam for being such a picky bastard?"himalaya wrote:The good thing is, because of this little exercise I have lots of very nice, clean and punchy kick drums. Ha! I sense a new sound bank coming.
Anyway, thanks for posting them. The Tremor ones still seem a bit dull on the high end. I think it might've been trickier to match them as they were mixed in with other drums. I've taken the liberty of just bouncing only the kick drums and at a higher quality. The first ones I posted were 128kbps mp3. These new ones are 24bit/44.1k WAV files. That might help a bit. You should be able to compare them a little more easily now.

Sam, you shall have a preset named after you. All for being so picky.
Anyhoow...thanks for the additional kick renders. If I get the time I shall spend more time on honing my kicks to perfection.
In the meantime here's a couple of quirky Tremor beats - clean as a whistle - no effects or any obvious distortion:

I've bumped this thread but I know it wants to die now.

lol MPD32 lists for $299 tops.Numanoid wrote: There was suggestion that Akai MPD32 was one of the better controllers to work with Geist: http://www.kvraudio.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=5018549
List price of that is $499 so with Geist that would cost close to $750, which is in Maschine ballpark number wise...

I'm using Geist (bought at a sale price of $99) with a Korg PadKONTROL ($150 regular price) and it is one of the better controllers already.knobs wrote:lol MPD32 lists for $299 tops.Numanoid wrote: There was suggestion that Akai MPD32 was one of the better controllers to work with Geist: http://www.kvraudio.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=5018549

$250 plus tax
That was my alternative to buying Maschine. Still, Maschine is pretty awesome. Geist is too. Depends what you want to do with each. You can always wait to see if a sale is going to happen. You can also install on three of your systems. Pretty cool. Even at $275 full price plus $150 for controller, it is a good deal.
After making the maps and Geistbinding settings for padKontrol, I haven't any complaints. Really flexible system and with one controller I can control pads, engines, scenes, patterns, repeats, transport.

I spent a week trying to install Tremor.
I'm just getting round to trying to install it again.
I've been through the whole UAC stuff. It just will not install.
I bought it six months ago. I'm going to give it another week. I reckon two weeks out of anyone's life should be a reasonable amount of time to install your software. I couldn't get tech support because it wasn't registered. But that was what I was asking for tech support for. Argggh..
To be fair to FXpansion, whilst this has driven me up the wall, I will say that they actually are probably THE BEST company out of everyone for tech support.
You know what you are dealing with. They don't work Sundays . And if they can't solve it there and then, they tell you to hold your horses. They give you feedback. I asked some big name DAW makers for some help recently. And they just ignored me for days on end. FXpansion are really brilliant when it comes to support. I never asked those DAW companies for help before, in fact I trouble shoot for them. Big deal. I mean nothing to them. I'm just another Mug Punter.
There's a handful of companies that I have 'Brand Loyalty' to. FXpansion and Camel are two of them.
I really want to get Tremor installed just to see what you lot are blahing on about anyway. .
Maybe it's just my system, if it still proves to be hassle (remember I have spent a whole week on this), I'll just knock it on the head. I'll wait until I have another computer and try it on there. I wouldn't sell it. It's not worth it.
Hopefully I can get it up and running soon and join in the fun.

Geist is amazing, but sometimes it's too much. Not in terms of features, but how it tries to be a micro-DAW.
There's a reason why I still find Battery far more inspiring than Geist, although I will end up using the latter.

Er, I think I'll stop with the analogies there.
Geist is fifth generation fighter jet. Those of us that can fly it can consider ourselves 'Top Guns'.
Er, ok, that is definitely my last analogy, metaphor, whatever.
Geist is great.
Uh guys can I have some tech support now please? ..
But really, Battery? They can't be compared.
If i was a Carpenter (here we go)
Then I would have a Saw and I would have a Tape Measure.
Um, not sure which is which now come to think of it...
But, I certainly wouldn't get them confused.
Never.
