For realism AND usability, nothing tops Orange Tree Samples Evolution Electric Guitar - Strawberry and Evolution Acoustic Guitar - Steel Strings both are used by pros on television, movies and pop FINAL productions, most virtual guitar sample libraries and VSTs don't make it to final production.

It really is personal preference and that means listening to a lot of demos yourself. I personally hate the Orange Tree Samples but understand others might feel differently according to their tastes. But I have seen a few people selling their Orange Tree guitars in the Market place. So if that's what you decide on, check the market place.
I personally like what I hear from Indiginus and certain Vir2 sounds. But I don't have either yet. Indiginus is cheaper and probably what I'll end up getting next (I especially like the Delta Blues guitar) and for electrics I'm waiting to afford the Vir Elec6ity since it is the only one that has a Rickenbacker electric 6/12 string.

If you need something less expensive and easy to work with, you could also go with the SampleTank sets. Not my favorite, but nowhere close to those that sound more like dulcimers than guitars to me.

If acoustics are what you're looking for, even the AAS acoustic Strum is decent, but I can't say I like the Electric Strum much, which is why I'm looking at Vir2 now.

Its best to check them out yourself, long and hard.
Good luck in your hunt.

I've got Electri6ity, Evolution: Strawberry, and RealLPC. Honestly, I use Strawberry the most. Electri6ity has more instruments, but it has a billion options that are kind of a pain to setup all the time, and Strawberry just sounds great out of the gate. Electri6ity is also huge and takes forever to load, and I personally don't hear the difference for most purposes.

PS: the Rick included in Electri6ity is a six string, not a twelve. Why? Great question!

Post

Correction then: Vir2 is the only one with a sampled six string rickenbacker.
And Like I said, I prefer its sound far above the OTree stuff. I also haven't seen anyone try to dump their Vir guitars yet.

But there's a few other companies that might appeal to you more personally than just these two. Check them all out for yourself.

Funny thing I very much like the sound of the Strawberry, but I can't do anything with the chording/strumming. I suspect that this is because I know nothing about playing real guitars. So easy for guitarists / experienced musicians, not so easy for amateurs.
Ah well I'll just write the chords in in Notion which I should have done in the first place.

Arguably the best for certain guitar sounds is run any instrument you like from a piano to a kazoo through a something like guitar rig. Mangle it enough and it sounds like a guitar in pain.

I agree about EAG - Steel Strings. Very uniform recordings with great sound quality, arranged perfectly. It really has an amazingly good balance of realism and usability and any oddities with the sound (quality/uniformity/realism) which often happen with such complex sound libraries, are very minimal.

I love Orange Tree Samples.

Vir2 Electri6ity also looks good, and while an earlier poster mentioned that he doesn't really hear much difference, for me I know exactly which model I'd be reaching for depending on musical context (as a starting point Strat for more biting funky cleans through to Hendrix fuzzy dirty, Les Paul for overdriven hard rock ala Led Zeppelin, P90 when I want the Les Paul hard rock to have an even more dirty uncontrolled sound, Telecaster for a more twangy clean sound, Rickenbacker for more jangly Beatles sound, ES335 for a fuller semi-acoustic blues sound, L4 for an even fuller semi-acoustic mellow jazz sound, not sure where I'd use the danelectro).

Ilya Efimov also looks good. Haven't tried them though, but their Duduk and Accordion libraries are great.

Ample Sound also gets a lot of love around here.

What's best? No idea.

Haven't checked out the Ilya guitars, but the duduk does sound great.

Agreed, Im sure with good programming iT would sound awesome but I havent quite figured it out yet.
Incidentally for acoustic strumming at least I just picked up the Ample AGT and it's super easy to get it strumming any chord in any patterm you like with the built in engine, sounds great too

I must say that i Use prominy V-Metal for the Heavier Tracks and i use the strawberry guitar for the more gentle one ....cause strawberry kinda lacks in the higher notes not as cut thru like the v-metal

I should clarify that when I said I didn't hear a difference, I was referring to realism. There is a definite, quite audible difference between the various models in Electri6ity, and I have owned most of them in real life, so that aspect I appreciate. It's just that nine times out of ten I want a humbucker sound, in which case I usually reach for the Orange Tree samples.

An important consideration with today's ultra-sophisticated virtual guitar libraries and VSTs is that it's complex to get authentic sounding guitar from a sample library or VST. Consequently, there's a lot of programming involved in the most sophisticated libraries. It's much more than just velocity layers, articulations and round round robins; it's about scripting, user experience and chord strumming engines. It was soooo much easier to research these kinds of libraries ten years ago before scripting became a critical factor.

There are MANY, MANY threads and posts on KVR by users of the various guitar libraries mentioned in this thread (and some that no one has yet mentioned). And there's a learning curve attached to any of these libraries and the ones with the most sophisticated scripting tend to have bigger learning curves for sure (Evolution, Electri6ity, Prominy LPC, Ilya's guitar libraries, etc.). But if you're looking for an ultra-realistic performance where guitar is prominent, I think one of the heavily scripted libraries makes a big difference. Consequently, complex scripting CAN (not always) sometimes mean a less than intuitive user experience. A lot of these developers are one men shows or very small shops that don't have expertise with usability and user experience design, consequently, in my experience, it's more than only the quality of samples, round robins, velocity layers and scripting -- it's also the quality of the user experience design and usability of the library that comes into play, so I strongly recommend you research with serious consideration given to this and not rely on demos alone. Search KVR and visit developers' support forums to see what actual users/customers have to say and any issues they're dealing with to get insights.

This controversy goes round and round every so often at KVR. During the last one I did a search and found that while many users found a 'learning curve' with Vir2 Electri6ity, that everyone of them going through that curve found the it to be worth the effort as the 'sophiscated Kontakt scripting' is often what ends up setting it apart from the rest as superior. I have noticed the Iyla support forum has had some threads concerning their strum features but haven't delved into them to see what they are. If you do, I would suggest you go there for your information.

Like I keep saying, it really comes down to a personal taste in the sound, which is subjective and no amount of sales intimidation tactics should let you sway you there.

Not sure if the OP has even stated yet if it is acoustic, electric or both?
Or what are the other considerations according to any particular guitars the OP is looking for?

If the sound is there, I'll learn it. Even if it takes some time. I didn't teach myself real guitar overnight either.
