Crusty punks never had any money, so they went for the cheap and cheerful and brightly coloured stuff like the Wasp
Can't get much more punk then Da Hornet

BTW Sigue Sigue Sputnik was maybe the ultimate synth punk band, and they used the Casio VL-1 in depth
So that is another synth punk synth to check out

Good excuse to post some Screamers. (With an Oddyssey). Actual 'punk,' as it was, with synths. Whatever 'synth punk' is supposed to be, though, I dont know, its not a term I ever saw being used until the last ten years or so, and certainly not concurrent- or post- 'actual' punk; doubt it actually has much to do with punk, or the often very synth reliant post-punk/new-wave stuff that followed it.

Maybe for Smash Hits readers. For anyone who'd actually been over the age of ten when New-Rose came out, not a chance; they were a sad joke and about as far from 'punk' as it got, in fact not that far from where James' old bandmate Billy Idol had pitched himself in the states. Poor-quality Devo derivatives, redone with samplers, watered down for Kiss fans.

I don't really about many bands of synth punk (or whatever they called) in the late 70's. I'm listening now to them and I like them They are refreshing especially with their live performances.
I suggested Element because it is from the easiest synths around to learn, but after I listened to some songs (especially the old ones). I think u-he ACE would fit perfectly as it has excellent presets with wide range of sound covering from dreamy pads to crazy leads to ARP 2600 bass to sharp plucks! Anyway, the thing I noticed about this genre is that the singing is the most important part of the song. So, I didn't hear such specific instruments. Organs plays very well in this genre and synths that can be tweaked easily.
This is a nice genre if it would get more popular

Even though the gutter-squats in our areas despise synths in any way shape or form (and if they have keyboards it's usually just an old half working organ they won't feel bad about trashing on stage), the philosophy of 'punk' is almost always actualized in minimalism.
Therefore, from the two you already have, I would simply say choose one, it doesn't really matter which, but just one. I would then suggest that you simply add a couple of effects to it to step it beyond it's own capability. Something like Guitar Rig (even just the free player version) and maybe pick up the two freebies being offered by Izotope right now (Vinyl & DDLY). Personally, for the gutter punks I know and their style, I would choose Massive to use with them. But that is subjective according to what I know would be the most acceptable to them. (Massive is not anywhere near being my favorite or most used, even though I do own it.) I also don't own Serum.
But I definitely wouldn't suggest getting another synth unless you plan on jumping into the rabbit hole of GAS and becoming so 'un-punk' that the gutter sees you as unreachable.

I was wondering the same. The nearest i could think of is Marilyn Manson. But then, i'm not sure if you could really call that "punk".Kinh wrote:What the eff is synth punk?

Italy, 1980. Tracklist over at Youtube or at http://www.discogs.com/Various-Pordenon ... ase/449374
Though I have to say I'm in the camp that thinks it has to be hc, otherwise it's watered down -- and not punk.

While i listened to some punk music in the past (e.g. The Offspring, Die Toten Hosen and others) i was not really aware of "Synth Punk" as a genre. Wikipedia also menions this as "Electropunk":
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electropunk
Looks quite interesting and i will maybe have a closer look at this genre. Wikipedia also mentions "The Prodigy" as related to that genre and for some of their songs this could indeed fit.
Those who do notremeber The Offsring could have a look at this:

Die Toten Hosen is a very well known band here in germany. A cool older song from them is this one:

The term was absolutely used in the early 80s. I was there. The term got replaced later by cyber punk.whyterabbyt wrote:Good excuse to post some Screamers. (With an Oddyssey). Atari Teenage Riot/Alec Empire makes me think of Synth Punk, but by then they called it Digital Hardcore instead

Ingo, not punk enough, can't watch it because of copyright issues.
>:P
This the kind of punk I like:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YIABH7ay_Jw
"The Exploited - Go to hell nazi bastard". The song duration is just about right.
And I've been watching stuff like this now and damn I want to go to a punk gig, it's been too long:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WmcDJcs01AY
No synths tho. :P
As for suggestions, the Combo Model F could be useful for some parts. http://www.martinic.com/combof/
