I've pretty much walked away from all freeware. I got tired of chasing clutter. Still there are those occasions when I think about adding a few to my library.

DMG Audio Track Control. Dead Duck Software bundle seems pretty cool so far.

Nothing. Not even Sonigen Modular or Synth1, which are actually fine synths.

There are just better things out there.

Adam Szabo's Phazor, TAL-Chorus-LX, A1TriggerGate, ocasionally: Blaukraut Charlatan, Tyrell N6, or TAL-Noisemaker. There's some cool freeware, but, mostly, i use my payware really. Although i use Phazor pretty heavily, and also A1TriggerGate when i need it. Phazor really sounds great, and A1TriggerGate is a really nice, and easy to use, and well featured Trance Gate.

I started making music with freewares many years ago, tried all of them,
but they can't compete with the rich functions and the stability (+GUI) of the commercial ones,
so I got rid of them.

Toneboosters Barricade CM is in my default channel strip limiter.

Everyday it does a safety net job.

Should I be using a better end-of-line channel plug?

Mostly sforzando, but various plugs for very specific sounds -- deputy for string machines, combo(f/v) for certain organs, and so forth. I'm not really a synth guy, it seems. If I were, I'd include xhip, obxd, crystal, and a lot more.

I still use Thrillseeker XTC and ArcDev ET-301 on a semi-regular basis.

Have you tried Barricade v4? Well worth the 30 Euro :)
