Best free synth to rule them all?

Ok, so what is the ultimate free synth, one that does everything, including effects? What is the one free synth you would pick if you were on a desert island and had just that one and no external effects, and the most basic vst player? Just you, a solar panel, and a laptop and headphones?

The FB-3300 kind of doesn't qualify though, it has no effects!

I don't know if it can really be considered free, but Beatzilla seems to have long legs.

Z3TA+ was given out as magware on one issue of Computer Music. I think that's hard to beat for a "free" synth. Quite some sonic power there, and a lot of onboard fx.

OK, so I should amend the 'rules': It has to be freely available now without purchase of anything. Links would help too so people can easily grab what interests them

It's really hard to argue against this synth. I haven't used it in ages and forgot it had effects built in. And an arp, and a scalable interface, which you can change colors. You could change the color every week and pretend you had a new synthchk071 wrote:Well, reading the original post again, i guess i'd pick Synth1. And cry my heart out on the lone island, that i left all my payware synths at home.

Probably the old VST version of ZynAddSubFX that everyone forgets about. Sure it's only 32-bit and the interface is disastrous, but it's THE most powerful freeware synth out there, period. 16-part multitimbral, 3 synthesis engines per part (one of which has 8 OSC's and Mod OSC's), and an internal mixer where you can route effects anywhere in the chain. You can write entire songs using only one instance of this thing.
