EDIT: fxp attached.
Your recreation using the freeware synth1 is astonishingly good !
I have listened to the original Toto recording and it is pretty close.
The mighty Yamaha CS80 versus little Synth1
Kudos

To answer with a question: do you think those 25k patches are all equally good? I personally don't think so, some are great, most are mediocre or even poor.deastman wrote: What exactly are “quality” patches? My guess is that if Synth1 was $199,and extra presets were say..... $30 for a 100,the whole thing would sound so much better to youfluffy_little_something wrote:

No, not at all. It applies to commercial synths and presets as well. There are horrible commercial sound sets for commercial synths out there...

So, to get back on topic of Africa brass (but not Synth1)...
Just registered on SC, so also little test of how/if it works:

LOL, they really should change to 192Kbps AAC... That 128Kbps mp3 doesn't sound very good.

That's very good. As I said pages ago, the other poster's sound was way too brassy, yours is more like a pad, like the originalMutant wrote:So, to get back on topic of Africa brass (but not Synth1)...

Not Synth1, but for those with Arturia Analog Lab there is a patch named "Totohorn" from the Matrix-12, that sounds close to the synth in the song.
Windows 10 and too many plugins

A couple of years ago I read an article talking about the making of Africa but I can't find it now. It might have been with Steve Lukather but I'm not sure. It also might have gone into synths but again, I can't be certain! I do remember him talking about how they did the percussion - they recorded a few bars and looped it. If anyone can find that article I'd love to read it again.

I found what I think was the article - it's actually the words of Al Schmitt! Interesting stuff about how they built up the percussion, and the synth was indeed a CS80.

Interesting, I would not have guessed that song meant such an effort in the studio. It doesn't sound like it. I know it is a well-known track, but I think it is rather mediocre.

The attack on the filter could be a tad softer but I think this is the best recreation I've heard so far.Mutant wrote:So, to get back on topic of Africa brass (but not Synth1)...

The detuning of the oscillators is way too high, mix is too loud, my sound doesn't use aftertouch which is neccessary to get the sustain right, etc etc.
