I don't program electronic music or play synths or anything, I play guitar and record prog/power metal songs, so I use VST instruments to add bass, drums and keys to my songs. I'm looking for 2 specififc things:
1) A bass synth that sounds like a real bass guitar
2) A lead saw type synth sound like Jordan Rudess of Dream Theater uses (if you don't know who he is, I know he uses Kurzweil and Korg Karma synths- dunno if that helps)
-oh yeah, and they need to be free
Thanks in advance for helping a n00b

Don't know about the synths, but I imagine almost any free vs/subtractive synth would give you a saw lead.
As for the bass;

Real sampled, nice bass, or:

another nice one with a couple of different sounds.

thanks, that 4front bass one is nice.
And what I forgot to mention is that the lead saw sound I'm looking for needs to be polyphonic, which most of the ones ive found are not

You're in luck; there are some killer polyphonic free ware synths capable of saw leads
Huge synth, underrated;
http://www.kvraudio.com/get/719.html
New Synth with a beastly sound, NeoKiller;
http://www.novakill.com/killerz.htm
And everybody's favorite, Synth1

Some would argue if your can't do it with those 3, it can't be done -- and all free!
