Big Tick's Angelina

Post

Angelina is a formant synth - sort of plastic sounding but in the ballpark. There are plenty of free choir soundfonts, most of them sampled from rompler keyboards that had good oooz and aaaz. The GM format has some choir sounds, but the quality varies between GM soundfonts or modules. There are some good (expensive) choir sample sets for the various samplers (Halion, Kontact, VSampler etc). Depends how much you want to pay. I find most of these choir pads give a cheesy GM feel to a mix that is very dated. If you want stunning Clannard type vocals sounds, your sort of have to do it yourself by recording a breathy vocal about 50 times (really) and using great reverbs. You could try CloneEnsemble on a single voice and/or harmonies for a similar effect.

I'd go for a good soundfont player, like Bismark's BS-1 or BS-16 or rcg audio's sfz. There are plenty of great soundfonts around with "ahhhh" and "ohhh" choirs.
I like these ones here especially: http://www.papelmedia.de/english/download/index.htm

There's one by Wusik called Vox'd. I'm pretty sure it would meet your needs:

They have a group buy until April 28th.

Jinx!

Sounds rather a bit cheesy to me, sorry!
Anyway, you can finds such "LoFi" ahhhs on samplesets of older synths, like the Kawais etc.
The effect on the pad in this songs seems to be a pulsed gate and not a real tremolo.

Check out Sonik Synth 2. It's got a stack of sampled vocal tones, as well as other vocal elements to layer and combine. Once you factor in the editing and awesome effects, you can pretty much make any choir pad you want. :)

Forever,

Kim.

IMHO I would think that you can take any female choir pad sound and then treat with effecs to get that kind of sound. :)

I'd like to like Angelina, but playing with the demo I've found that it is really quiet compared to other VSTi plugins (OK, that can be fixed I guess), but more problematic for my tastes is that the "Breath" parameters sounds to me like it's simply adding hiss. Patches that set the breath parameter value to zero, however, sound too subtle and indistictive (again, to my ears - YMMV). So I'm still searching for the perfect vocal/formant synth (i.e. non-sample based).

ZynAddSubFX has some interesting vocal pads.

I've heard of Music Concrete...is there Music Asphalt?

Auger by Antti is a freebie wavetable synth that is very musical and capable of vocal-esque pads that evolve over time. You need to find the freebie patch bank that was developed for this.

If you haven't tried it yet, download GalactiX here...

This has some very nice vox sounds, and lots more.
