Queen - I Want To Break Free

How to make that sound...

I'm interested in the solo lead sound, I know it's a Jupiter 8... but anyone has any idea on how to get that particular sound? I can hear that the filter envelope closes before the amplitude envelope, but other properties are kind of a mystery for me to decypher (and I have good ears). Is some xmod involved, maybe?

Beats me. Good luck. :?

I'm pretty shure it's a blend of guitar and synth (guitar synth) played on the guitar.
But maybe somebody knows better.

It was played on guitar live, but was a synth on record played by someone not in the band (who played on other records of theirs) but I can't remember the name. Don't know why I thought it was a Mini Moog though. Couldn't tell you how to program it either way.

You want to break free & I want to have my tea.

Hmmm . . . I think we have a hit in the making there. It's got a certain ring to it!

No, really people. Please if anyone can share some bits I'd be glad to hear it :)

This may help a little bit . . .

[Search 01] The synth solo is played by Fred Mandel - live, however, May played it on guitar.

[Search 02] It was a Mini Moog played by guest musician Fred Mandel. There is a patch for the Kawai K5000 that was designed to sound just like this synth solo . . .

Seems to be available as a download for Kawai:

I'm 100% convinced the lead sound is a Korg X911 guitar synthesizer. I remember trying one and it was spot on. It must be the one.

Although I do believe it's spot on: you seem to be wrong.

If Brian May said it's Jupiter 8 on a certain DVD, then I guess my assumption was correct ;)

Now, on to programming :D

i prefer their earlier work!

:P

(no synths, as they used to say! )

Does anyone know where I can get a Freddie Frock?

Their earlier work was magnificent. But, Innuendo and Made In Heaven are all great records, too. I have their discography, and by far the worst album was Hot Space... wrong music in the wrong time.

Post

Was it that one with the remixes, alternate versions and "old backup recordings" (Let me Live, and that other thing - dunno it's name anymore, was in the billboard charts)?

I stopped pretty much after listening to "Queen Gold 2", and short before Freddie's death.

Largely agree, except for Under Pressure (with Bowie), which is one of my favorite tracks of all times :)
