How to make that sound...

Hi kvrians! I was reading a topic on reddit about creating Underworld - Rez.

https://www.reddit.com/r/synthesizers/c ... y_of_song/

It seems sample and hold, but it's tuned to the scale of the song. In the topic, someone mentioned a quantizer to make the S&H locked to scale notes.

But, how would you guys approach this sound on VSTI? Which synth, which techniques?

Post

There is a vsti synth / fx that has this sequencing option with resonance thing. I think i saw it here maybe 2 years ago? Damn i can't remember the name now. I'm sure someone here at KVR will post it soon enough.

I'd approach it by firing up Imposcar and reading the following tutorial.

Factory by sugarbytes has scale quantized pitch as a modulation destination. Also many modular synths have scale quantizing. Both hosts I use regularly have midi pitch correction plugins that work in real time so that whatever notes you play they are forced into key.
Don't F**K with Mr. Zero.

I wish I could. Downloaded imposcar 2 demo, and I'm too dumb to find the init preset, recall button or whatever.

Did you try reading step 2 of the tutorial ?

There's not an init patch on Imposcar 2. There's even a topic on kvr about this: viewtopic.php?t=334715

What happens when you hit the recall button next to the mod wheel ?

This is what I say, there's no recall button on Imposcar 2.

Ok,for Imposcar 2 you have to hold "Ctrl" and click the knobs to reset them to the initial settings. It's a good idea to save the patch once all controls are initialised for later use.
If you can't be bothered PM me your email address and I'll send the patch to you, but you'll probably be quicker just control+clicking the knobs yourself.

Am I doing something wrong, or does that suggestion from Musicradar sound nothing like the synth line from Rez?

Post

Synths without a init preset button must die.

Anyone have an expert opinion on this one?

I heard another track on the radio with a very similar nasal twanging tone. Somewhat jaw harp like in fact. About 2.10 into this video:

So to me it's basically just the resonant overtones of a bandpass filter.

I've gotten some very interesting results using the clean mode bandpass filter in Hive with both filters in series.

The main issue is pitch-tracking the overtone, and do that with two filters too. Is there an clever way of doing that, or would you just have to manually change the cutoff and play it by ear?

I'd recommend trying a synth with a nice osc sync, like the Oddity.

Here's someone who made a pretty great version of it on an Arp Oddyssey and played it live:
