my gui implementations are usually very methodical.. top row = ~the dsp 'barrel' with modulators situated as compactly as possible below..
..i've also changed my usual 'velocity adjustment' mode.. the target used to sit in the center of the range, now it sits at the top.. so increasing velocity responsivity range lowers the floor towards zero..
doesn't matter much, just different. probably do it all differently next year.
another thing.. contrast.. i use a dark, low-contrast monitor setting to reduce eyestrain.. i tend to use the most subtle contrasts that seems reasonable for region/border definition.. moving parts and text labels always have at least 50% contrast.. unless it's a perfunctory control..
anything that doesn't work so well for you?
thanks for the welcome all

I am starting to get into gui's with lots of things that blink and light up...

Just yesterday I was browsing in your vast production of synth, well I like the style of the suite and noticed it was anticipated in 2 or 3 older things you did. I like that, more than the one you adopted in the hi-hat series which was less original, IMO, even if not bad.
Instead, I think you better reached a recognisable style with the SON suite, with all those whitey arrows and gentle, low contrast colour tones.

I really like your subtle contrast GUI implementation. as well as the "zen" like quality they have..they are very easy on the eyes when using during long studio sessions...keep up the great work.xoxos wrote:another thing.. contrast.. i use a dark, low-contrast monitor setting to reduce eyestrain.. i tend to use the most subtle contrasts that seems reasonable for region/border definition.. moving parts and text labels always have at least 50% contrast.. unless it's a perfunctory control..

On one of my laptops, some of your light colored synths with low contrast (like boing and pling) are really, really hard to see. I have to set the screen angle just right. It's more the laptop's fault than yours, but it might be something for you to keep in mind.
Congrats on your own forum!

how's this?
my eye correlates different regions by contrast easily.. i guess for me more easily than by colour.. so placing auxiliary parameters at a lower contrast level ~aids in defining regional and global travel :p
your laptop has a bright monitor setting, or a low spec lcd? (i've noticed my lcd dithers some grayscale) i'm guessing the slider/button/arrow graphics are difficult to see.. boing could do with more gui attention, pling could use that and more modulation.
i've been thinking dark guis to reduce lumens. atm i seem to prefer using lighter colours.. on my monitor grayscale exhibits more colouration from viewing angle and ambient light.. ~subtle spectral effect. probably why i like them.[/precious]

Rurik,
I like the low contrast GUI designs. SON is particularly nice. If you decided to go for a higher contrast GUI, please keep them as simple as you currently have with SON. Tweakbench uses high contrast, yet very simple appearance controls.
I like those better than some photo-realistic rendition of knobs and hardware. When I see those, it just makes me want to use the actual hardware, not the software emulation.
With the flat-panel, minimalistic GUI like yours and tweakbench, and GVst for that matter, it makes me want to use the software. It has the attraction of a pad of paper and a box of crayons on the table in front of me - the urge to create is implicit in their existence before me.
Perhaps these analogies will go well with you, perhaps not:
Matisse - his best work was with the simplest materials - paper cutouts.
Ansel Adams is not famous for color photos and yet he is probably the best known photographer in history.
Which art is most famous from China and Japan? The most minimalistic.
There is beauty in the simple line on paper; expertly drawn. Your VSTi are like that to me; including the GUI design.

i understand that. often when presented with 'another' gui to design i think back to my drawing paper days. i like to keep ~an ephermal, 'temporary autonomous' aesthetic.. as opposed to 'mighty castle' aesthetic..
..and hopefully to talk myself into whatever works the best..

inquiry 2.0..
have you ever been confused by one of my params that seems as if it was intended to be vernacular?
eg. is there anyone who really prefers the label 'inv' to 'i' on a button that is associated with another param? anything notably confusing?
i've spent some time using my plugins lately and want to improve my gui density.
i'll probably be adding gradients to knobs and sliders too.. something around the animated graphic so i can visually realign a control to a setting during live use....

Yes, with your latest "midi quickie", the random note generator.xoxos wrote:inquiry 2.0..

I must say i am very pleased to blindly tweak it, but i don't understand much what does what.
With such a plugin, it is not a showstopper at all, it is even a bit "part of the game", but to answer our question above : "yes, i am confused"
[btw, getting a bit OT : would it be possible to have such a midi random note generator plugin, but using routable LFOs ? So we could have accelrating notes, pitching notes, etc]
Thank you, Xoxos !

'talent' may do this for you.. plugin doesn't sync well everywhere.
those quickies aren't due for updates. however, when i finally get to it.. advanced algorithmic tools are next for me.

Hi
Thanks for the advice.
I have Talent, but can't really figure out what it does, too
I use also ARp4Midi, which i dig.

It has to be unambigously. e.g. a "v" could be "variate" or "velocity-mod-depth". If I'm totally into it, is not a problem but live and in a hurry this could be a source of accidents.xoxos wrote:inquiry 2.0..

yes, and try to "color" code it that one can see, is it a base parameter , a stochastic value, a modulation or such.xoxos wrote: i'll probably be adding gradients to knobs and sliders too.. something around the animated graphic so i can visually realign a control to a setting during live use....
Generally, I like the GUI of the last year work of you (the models), where the positioning of the controls correspond to a schematic, that illustrates the function of the machine. I love talent, but this one missed this (maybe it is also a lot more difficult to do a schematic for an algorithmic tool )
I'm really looking forward to the new algorithmic tools.
some more comments: I really love your work, I is definitely a challenge to understand your plugs but at last it is always worth the afford! The only one I never understood was "breaks". And 23words definitely needs drag& drop!
