Interesting load meter behaviour

While using Cantabile (Performer 2.0.0.2067), I notice sometimes the load meter is hovering around 40-50%, but then if I simply expand and collapse a rack, even one that's bypassed/muted, the load meter will drop to a comfortable 20%, where it will typically stay for a while. Any idea why this might be?

One more thing - am I likely to have lower load if I have the Cantabile window minimised? Since the load meter is not visible when it's minimised I can't tell, but I wondered if I might be right in assuming the processor might be less busy (e.g. not drawing moving level meters etc).
