It's a good trick, and I love the videos.
Having done a version of this many times: it tends to sound better if you do not include the hat. If you really want that drone (which tends to detract from the rhythm), you could instead run a separate instance for the hat at much smoother settings while the kick/snare one is set to more percussive settings. That way, you get a smooth, clean sounding drone and can still dial in the percussive bit to taste, so yo don't need to compromise on either.

Thanks. Running the hat on a separate track might work to smooth things out, I'll give it a try sometime.
