Michael Sandler - Coyote Flutes ($5.99 download)

Coyote Flutes is electronic music composer Michael Sandler’s first release with Blue Water Records. Marking a departure from his spartan minimalist guitar works, Coyote Flutes employs electronic synthesis to create a collection of songs that are texturally complex yet spacious in their structure. On this album, Sandler weaves abstractions, chimes, chills, and drones into an open and beautiful if sometimes unnerving or unfamiliar universe.

The five tracks on this album unfold at their own pace like the slow majestic blooming of roses. They Came In a Pod hovers on the brink of atonal dissipation, only to be tugged back in just the right moments. A study of nothingness, Long Space neither moves nor stands still, emerging cold and inviting from the harsh beauty of space. Formation builds on a slow odd-time sequence to a roar of creation - only to then become quiet and take a step back to gaze. The Lizard’s Eye rests consonant and dissonant tones atop a rich drone, while in the title track the cries of the canine protagonists swell and fade like an orchestra of moonlit mystery.

Coyote Flutes is a brush with the eternal, a journey from lonely mesas to deep space to the fissures of the human psyche. Suitable for sleep, meditation, ambient noise or active listening, this is an album that remains both comforting and challenging after many listens.

Mystified - The Hand Of Jayanti ($5.99 download)

The hand of the lovely Jayanti was a coveted prize in Hindu myth, promising 1000 years of bliss. Just as sublime is this exotic new release by Mystified. Dark and minimal, yet engaging and atmospheric, The Hand Of Jayanti takes listeners on journeys through time and space, allowing them to re-orient themselves according to more transcendent realities.

Rather than imposing a rigid grid of sound, this release presents floating textures and colors that shimmer with great beauty. Chordal structures form and disintegrate. Sounds are, at times sparse - and at other times quite full. Recurring themes are balanced with unique and rare events.

This is atmospheric ambience that does not turn off the mind, nor does it shock or overstimulate. The release is engaging both to the ear and to the brain, tickling the listeners' aural and mental expectations and expanding their spans of attention. Playing this music causes a recalibration, reaffirming longer perspectives and deeper insights. This way leads towards peace and enlightenment.
