PORN! or rather, one of the better pop songs I've worked on

This is a song written long ago by a guitarist I have worked with for years. This song has been rescued from the oblivion of defunct-bandness by the miracle of inexpensive digital audio technology (and a bunch of mostly borrowed microphones)
This recording isn't perfect, but the new version we are working on will be and when it is done we are actually going to try to well...sell it, so...
Anyway it is called Ma Gavte La Nata which is Piedmontese Italian for "Take out the Cork".
I think it's about Robespierre...or something...

Oh YES! I love it!
It's amazing! Poppy, gutsy, dopey, kind of like some of the best Kula shaker songs, maybe? Kick ass song, Herodotus! I'll buy it!
Ma gavte la nata... Rings a bell. Is that from some book? Eco, perhaps? Foucault? I can't remember, but that's unimportant.
Guys, don't miss this gem!
And apologies to the contestants, I was going to listen to the September songs and try to vote, but now I'm just going to listen to Herodotus on repeat until bedtime and beyond!

Yeah, not bad. Catchy pop tune.
If i may, the vocals aren't cutting it for me. They get a bit redundant. Also, just a suggestion, you may want to experiment with different vocalists if you can cause this song calls for a different tone.
I hesitate mentioning this because i find this is the most sensitive issue and it is all too common.
In my experience doing production work, there were MANY cases where there was the writer and then there was the performer suited for that specific song (vocalist). Even if said writer wrote the song for him/herself as a solo artist or as part of a band.
With this song, you have the writing chops and yes, you have a nice voice, but it doesn't fit the mood of the song.
Just my opinion.
But again....nice songwriting

I agree that the vocals need a little more work. I think the vocal could be as good as many commercialy relesed songs, but the vocalist could lift their performance by really getting the vowel sounds nailed. A good example was (ahem!) Billie Piper singing that awful 'because we want to' song. An untrained vocalist would have sung the phrase 'we can do...' more like 'Wi cun du' as it is normally spoken. She sang it 'Weeeeee can doooooo' and made each vowel sound distinct. If the vocalist isn't smiling while they sing make sure they do; it will help lift the voice some more. Also the song could lose a minute off its time and be none the worse. Sorry if I'm being picky but maybe these things could help take a good song even further. But I like it.

Great stuff
I think the vocals are fine as is, tho' I'd love Dekky to have a go at them.
A damn fine listen all in all

Wow.
Mixed reviews! Almost like kvregulars disagree with each other or something!
Just to be clear, this isn't 'my' song. I just wrote and played the extremely catchy drum part and served as the 'tracking' engineer.
I doubt the vocals will ever be changed significantly in future recordings. The guy who wrote the song (and who played the bass and guitar and did the Bvox) has worked on it for a long time, and is unlikely to change his mind about anything. And the vocalist (who is not the songwriter) is the only one we know who has the proper range for it.
Actually, he (the vocalist), is a cocky little guy, so a negative review or two will do him some good.
In any case, thanks for listening, all!

Nice one Hero
One of the better songs of it's genre I've heard in here in quite a while.
The mix sounds fine on my monitors -- one of the things about critiquing vocals (for me anyway) is that it's very hard to know what the voxer was up to as far as his style is concerned unless he was sort of a regular here and we all knew his style/preferences better.
Overall I find the song tasteful and appealing -- but of course, as a vocalist and a picker, I can hear a dozen things I'd add to it (as we all tend to do).
Cheers,
Alex

Well said xander, and any comments I made I'll consider in the light of what you said. And again, a very good song and one I saved to listen to again.

Great song John. Liked your playing, the not-so-polished mix, the pshychedelia touches and the ... vocals (don't tell this to that cocky little guy )
If I go insane, please don't put your wires in my brain
