hey guys. i posted this 6 or 7 months ago...I didn't have a direct link then, so it didn't get many hits...

but i've recently discovered this great music hosting site...it's called jazzyspoon.com and it provides me with all of my music hosting needs...for free! :hihi: *EDIT/DISCLAIMER* (this is obviously a joke, but you never know who visits these forums...so please don't go to jazzyspoon's site and ask for free hosting of your music...he's doing a huge favor for me. thanks!)

this is my masters thesis composition. it's an experimental/ambient/computer music piece.

title: The Composer's Journey

The structural inspiration of the piece is inspired by The Hero's Journey model (hence the title), by Joseph Campbell.

I remember listening to this when you first posted. Can't remember if I commented then.

There are good bits in here, but I find it hard to enjoy overall. I'm generally resistant to any music that tries to convey a narrative, as I don't think music is very good at it. I often find that the structural impetus of ever moving forward that narrative demands often gets in the way of the music, like the musical equivalent of burying good food in too many ingredients.

cool. thanks for the response (how dare you not fall absolutely in love with it :x :hihi: )

in retrospect, i probably shouldn't have even mentioned its inspiration...that way all opinions would be based on the music itself...without any extra baggage....because i'm not sure that one would be able to tell that it's based upon a story, unless they were told so beforehand.....

thanks again, shamann :)

I'm pretty sure they would. The narrative form is fairly evident.

yeah, you're probably right with this track. i mean, that was the whole point of the thesis; to compose and arrange a computer music composition based on the structure of story....so if it is obvious, then i shouldn't be suprised....

by the way, do you not like film scores/soundtracks? imo, some of the most moving music have been film scores/soundtracks, and they are intrinsically tied to the narrative structure.... :)

In general, not a big fan. My favourite soundtrack is Eraserhead, which, if you've ever heard (I think the CD was recently re-released), isn't quite the same as most scores.

The last soundtrack I can think of that I bought was Clint Mansell's score for Requiem for a Dream. What's funny is that I absolutely love the music as used in the movie, but when I listen to the record, I find it mostly uninteresting.

Going the other direction, I actually find most movies and television shows (and video games) overuse music. I'd much rather they used it sparingly and paid more attention to using sound artistically overall.

Mel, I really enjoyed this. It is very artful and abstract.
I do not pretend to know the story that defines this piece very well, nor do the details of its inspiration sway the opinion of my appreciation for it. This is a large and intricate piece of sound design and musical imagery that I think really begs for the appropriate environment/moment to really become absorbed by it. I chose to listen to it late last night with a glass of wine. Closed my eyes and just let myself get lost in it. It was very relaxing and at the same time made my mind keep moving, too.

Thanks for sharing and keep up with the artistic stuff, Meloday. I believe it will come in handy for the things you want to accomplish in the future somehow.
peace

Epic! While, like Jazzy, I can't pretend to know the story behind it, I did find it engrossing. Excellent work all around.

very kind and encouraging words, jazzy...thanks so much! i'm glad you were able to get into it....yes, i think an appropriate emersive environment helps you 'experience' the piece a little more. i got a great response when i presented at the graduation concert...
