I've been working on a mix for a new song of mine called Charged Particles. I'm having a little trouble with the EQ. Click the very first song on the page below:

http://www.soundclick.com/bands/default ... tent=music

It's a 128k mp3 - file size 3.86 MB

Equipment used:

Nostalgia (lead and bass)
Sytrus (harmony)
NuSofting DK+ (drums)
Sonitus parametric EQ

Anyway, here are some things I've noticed. The lead sounds too bright for the high notes (around 1:24, for example). I made cuts at 1k and 3k, but it still isn't quite there. Also, the low notes are a little on the muddy side. I made a cut around 200hz, which did help. The harmony is probably my biggest concern. It sounds rather unfocused. I'm guessing there's too much low end, but I'm not sure what to cut besides 200hz. The bass seems pretty good, except there are times when it gets buried. I'm guessing the harmony is responsible for that. I'm not sure about the drums. The snare and high hat seem fine, but I'm thinking I should make a cut for the bass drum. Any suggestions to improve the mix would be appreciated. Also, should I use compression on the lead at all? Thanks in advance.

reverb and or chorus is what is giving you trouble....

imho,

otherwise, fantastic track... less eq cutting, more pan.. :-)

I thought you composed this beautifully, btw.

cheers

There was a group from Chicago called Scientific back in the early 00s, and this sounds like an instrumental that they could have composed. Good stuff.

There is quite a bit of reverb on the harmony track, now that you mention it. I have the harmony hard-panned left and right. Should I change to maybe 75% or so?

Thanks for the kind words! I appreciate it. :)

Thanks! I'll check them out. (Oddly enough, I grew up in the Chicago area.) :)

I'd pull everything back to the Drum and Bass tracks and start from there. The Drums sound a bit dry/dead to me. The bass could be punchier.

Then, for my tastes I'd pull back the release on the lead key sound or cut back the reverb... Or replace it altogether.

I thought about using more reverb on the snare, but I was afraid it would interfere with the low end on the other tracks. When you say the bass could be punchier, do you mean compression or EQ?

I wonder if the long release on the lead is causing some of my troubles? I'll have to check when I get home. Thanks for the suggestions.
