Time for another new month of songwriting fun! Last month we had a suggestion for entries where everything (though realistically maybe we could say at least one track?) had been entered without playing it in on a controller keyboard or with an acoustic instrument -- programmed directly, if you will. Any thoughts on that?

A programmed track could be very fun, have done much of that almost nothing.

Sure but you'd have to decide - is it "everything" or "one track" ?
If it is just one;
a. izzat the only track in the piece ?
b. how is only one track within a mix of many discernable ? example - my pieces all use programmed vst drums - is this a free-for-all beyond the one programmed ?

I'd be OK with every track being written piano-roll . . .

This sounds like a great idea, especially if it is the whole track.

Would the rule be to just not use controllers? By which I mean, could we use any form of manual entry? Might be a great time to use some of the sequencers that I have, or maybe dare a first track in Renoise :o

The whole song must be programmed or we can skip the theme.
Don't see the point with just one track being programmed, and the rest is not.

But...my hand's better now..

Nah, was my idea; I do it all the time anyway, sometimes because I can't be arsed playing, but principally to wind up one of my mates that I'm a better guitarist with a mouse than he is with his fancy Taylor guitar.

All or nothing!

I feel like that's too easy. How about all the synthesized sounds have to be sequenced, instead of played with a controller or programmed?

^ yeah, my take on Donkey's suggestion is a piece not played with fingers but with the machine as programmed by fingers
whether that's an appegiator(sp?) or piano roll or what-have-you; I don't think that it matters

Aye, that's what I meant - still use arpeggiators (sp x2?) and strumming tools etc but no controllers, be they keyboard, geetar, drum etc. Also, no real instruments, just man and machine...

I think we have our contest theme for July, then :) I'll put up the post now so folks can get started.

Sounds like a plan.

I admit I'm kinda chuckling at the rules, because pretty much everything I do is programmed, in the box. My singing voice is tone deaf, and I have zero dexterity for playing/strumming/whatever, so that's my only option.

I will try to get a track in that does "Cyborg" justice.

Just because it's insane doesn't mean it's a bad idea.

Well, this is totally not my normal route to take. It's proving difficult, but fun

I have never programmed a whole song before, so this is fun.
