So I have an album I completed awhile ago (The Double Eclipse) and I'm thinking of selling it. I'm trying to get my name out there and get people to notice my work more and think this album could do pretty well. I'm still a little hesitant since it might entail a big investment, and I don't want to sit on a stack of unsold CDs. Anyone had any luck with just going for it? I'm debating between using CafePress (more safe and less investment, but little profit) or printing about 500 CDs and selling them through PayPal on my site and possibly locally (more investment and more risk of not selling my copies). Any suggestions\advice would be great. Thanks!

I think CD Baby takes a slightly lower cut than Cafe Press. Also, CD Baby is strictly a music site, so that might work in your favor:

Buy my cd here (Prog rock/synth pop/classical/soundtrack-ish music):

I just burn about 10 CDR's at a time, use my Epson to print on the CD and ship them off to CD baby. I have sold about 14 CD's (but selling 3 of them in Europe gives me an extra kick for some reason).

Sounds kind of what I've been doing so far, minus the cash flow. I've been burning and printing my CDs (on an Epson too) just for friends and family, but I'd like to start making some coin on this and getting my name out there more. Anyone have any luck with going to local record stores and selling CDs through there?

Like jeffn1, I am a cdbaby artist. I have 2 CDs on their site (www.cdbaby.com/polaris & www.cdbaby.com/aardvark). The Polaris is New Age/Classical - have sold 2 copies in 4 months. Aardvark is Melodic Instrumental Rock - haven't sold a single copy in 9 weeks, although both are getting lots of hits.
I'm not a performing musician so its difficult to get the word out. I've given away a bunch of CDs. Everyone says they like it, but no coin as of yet.
Hang in there!

Jeffn1 - I will eventually get around to buying a copy of your CD - the previews are very good.

You can also hear my classical stuff on www.showprogramming.com. My songs are featured in GPO Variety Hour #2, 3, 7, 10, 15 & 19. My stuff is listed under David Lang - they require you to register using your real name.

A local band captured (http://www.captured1.com) recently released their album and went into HMV and asked if they would stock it and they said yes. I believe you can also get it in another local music shop.

I'd also suggest like other have CDBaby. Also CD-WOW (http://www4.cd-wow.com/) have an unsigned section.

Good luck with it
