oday: glad you're enjoying. dirt is the oldest sample of the bunch and thus i can't remember exactly how i made it. one of my first laptop-only sets back in 1999 or so used manipulations of just that one sample for 30 minutes or so. it actually went over ok. the numbered samples are newer cos i ran out of patience trying to name things! take care. andrewodavy wrote:Right, I've had a listen to the entire lot of these, and the majority are really quite good... I like the way that the washes / ambience effects and loops aren't smothered in reverb like so many other samples in that category are. I also like the instant cut betwqeen different types of sound within a sound, like switching TV channels... it's all very dark-bient, random-core and spook-step (I should write those down...)
A few of my favourites...
AndrewDuke_0019 - has a really nice 'Alien' film quality to it. I thought the sample was going somewhere else with the organ like pad sound but then the bass comes in and turns it on its head. Really atmospheric.
AndrewDuke_0026 - reminds me of the end stages of Silent Hill 3 for playstation 2. Probably where something is burning. I don't know why
AndrewDuke_buzz - once I get this to loop, it'll be a really good glass rubbing sfx, again highly useable.
AndrewDuke_dirt - is this multi-layered? What's that sub bass going on, and is it over the top of some vinyl effect or other?
AndrewDuke_breathshiver - if DJ Shadow had a textile mill, this is what it would sound like.
AndrewDuke_0053 - here, the whole of the pod racer scene in Star Wars is re-inacted by the moomins. Or small mice.
I could go on, but I can't be arsed. Great samples though. Cheers!

I've just started teaching a class at the local community college
on sound design/synthesis/production with Ableton Live and Native
Instruments Reaktor. For the students' first homework assignment,
they're going to be mangling the following loops I made:

Ya'll are welcome to use 'em as well. Take care. Andrew

You're quick welcome, Meffy. If you (or anyone else reading this)
make any songs with the samples, please post links so I can check
out the results. Take care and happy music-makin'. Andrew

Hey, Barf. The 2 homework links have been posted in the last 2 weeks. The older links were posted last June, so I no longer have them on my server, but they are here now:Barf wrote:\Sauhaq wrote:I would love to try these out and give my feedback. But the links are broken.

A production contest of sorts is being set up
by one of the members on the mnml.nl forum
using those samples I made; here's the thread
if you'd like to read more and/or join in:

A new round of the sound design/production class I'm teaching
(called Making Music With Computers by the college, thus
MMWC for short) starts tonight; focus programs are Ableton
Live and Native Instruments Reaktor; for the first two assignments
in the class, students have to mangle a limited pool of samples
using certain procedures; so that students use the same audio
starting point, I give them a bunch of samples I've made for
them to tweak. I'm also making these audio files (loops, hits,
some field recordings, etc) available to anyone else who wants to
use 'em (links below). If you missed out on them the first
time I posted about this (they're royalty-free), here's the download info:
http://andrew-duke.com/MMWCassignment1audio.zip
http://andrew-duke.com/MMWCassignment2audio.zip
(Note: these are newly named zips; the old zip locations mentioned previously
in this thread are no longer valid).
Course info: http://andrew-duke.com/course.html
All I ask is that if you use of my samples in anything that you post a link so
we can check out the results.

I just found out the coolest thing.
As you know, I do sound design
for others to use and my sounds are
re-used in various areas and I
rarely find out about it unless someone
tells me "hey, I used your sound" or
I happen to hear it used elsewhere.
Well, today I got an email from the guy
who did the audio for the new promos
for Survivorman which airs on TV on
Discovery Science:
http://science.discovery.com/convergenc ... orman.html
The sound designer told me
he really likes my sound design work and
used some of my sound design in a TV promo
for the show. I'm a fan and actually watch
this show regularly, so this has special meaning to me.
How cool is that?! I'll post a link to the promo
on my site if I get permission and
let you know. Wow, I am so thrilled
about this. Take care.
