A new linux synth is available, padthV1 from Rui Capela, (the qtractor/qjackctl creator)
Built around the padsynth from zynaddsubfx. A great sound designer will
be able to make great sounds, and others might just get lucky

Guitarix dev has a repository available to keep the latest version
available in synaptic package manager,=, lots of drumsynth updates lately.
There is also a link to dowload the .deb file directly.
Wish all linux devs were so interested in making their work
so easy to get to!

Studio 13.37 V 3.0 is out in the wilds!

http://studio1337.pro/

In a nutshell, for those unfamiliar, Studio 1337
uses a puppy linux base, (xenial-pup in this version)
and builds a system of linux audio/video apps,
which are compiled on a custom realtime kernel,
(4.9.35 in this version) and it all runs in ram,
for maximized audio/video production
performance and stability, in a friendly and affordable environment,
and installed on a bootable usbstick, for great portability.

If you are a musician who also values your time at the pizzeria,
the fishing hole, the golf course, the skating rink,
the home-theater, the ball game, the movie house,
the tavern, the church, and just getting computer production done
without hassles or dropouts, then Studio 1337 should be
a no-brainer. The price is trivial compared to ones
finite supply of 24 hour days, in which to create something
memorable, before the lights go out in this life.

I want to thank everyone for keeping this thread up! I am moving further and further away from Windows and more and more to Linux, and this thread is really helpful!! :-)

Glad you find some useful info. It's the many coders
and configuration masters who keep things moving forward
and in working order. Always something new to try,
and improvements in the systems/apps to enable.

Pure Data - aka Pd - rolls on. The Cyclone devs continue to expand their library for MAX/MSP compatibility, and at least two projects exist for creating VST plugins that run Pd code inside your DAW. Pure Data rolling on, indeed.

Think ye that wizards have ceased their labors upon yon noble LISP-based sonic environments ?! Nay, I say to thee that said wizards toil tirelessly to improve their SND sound editor, their Common LISP Music, and their Grace/CM algorithmic composition system. True wizardry here, and you may well require a learned guide, the likes of which may be found at Planet CCRMA.

And btw, did you know that JMSL - the Java Music Specification Language - runs nicely on Linux ?

http://www.algomusic.com/jmsl/

I know, it ain't FLOSS, but it rocks as a composition environment.

Various software packages from IRCAM run on Linux. Some are free, some cost. Of the free things, OpenMusic is a must-have program for composers working in contemporary idioms. Ditto for many of its support libraries. For a few bucks more you can get Linux binaries of IRCAM's SuperVP phase vocoder and Pm2 kernel for additive resynthesis.

Okay, the caffeine is wearing off. Ciao out, glokster !

Reaper native in Linux is going to be awesome. Sionara windows and all your extra bloat and privacy intrusions. I just hope more devs hop on board the Linux train.

Add accidose to the linux vst creator list,
with an alpha release of his long-running
X-hip synthesizer!

http://xhip.net/alpha/

Read and head the alpha release notes.
I downloaded the synth and skin archives,
extracted the xhip synth archive to
/home/me/.vst, then made the path /home/me/xhip/synth
and extracted the linux skin archive there,
which created the '8' folder
which has the skin essentials inside.
So the folder '8'

/home/me/xhip/synth/8

contains two folders, 'bitmap cache', and 'skins'
and one file, 'fonts.xarc'

I've run it in the linux port of reaper, and easily made
a very simple 2 osc ePiano sound to run with various effects,
(mild flanged distortion, and some quiet forward
and reverse delays) very enjoyable results, and no
eye-strain from the gui.

wget went and got Rave Generator V2, looks like
a lot of work completed since the earlier release.
Should be a good compliment to IK's Syntronik,
which is working in linux reaper when wrapped by Airwave,
assuming a recent wine version is lurking in the background.

The linux reaper is quite astonishly awesome already
The interface seems just slightly slower than the windows version
run in wine-staging, and wrapped vst scanning is almost as good,
in the 95% range ballpark. Between LinVst and Airwave wrappers on linux,
and a wine enabled windows version of reaper, my win7 drive
sits gathering dust on a box of back-up dvd's. Not forgetting
that mixbus, bitwig, renoise, qtractor, ardour, tracktion, and radium
all have their own daw benefits and work-flows to make use of.
Oh happy day...

Would it be possible to get something like Garritan Personal Orchestra working?

Post

Hi, I can use Miroslav Orchestra in IK Multimedia SampleTank 3.0 and 2.5.
Cakewalks Dimension Pro 1.5, and the various Zampler derivatives also work,
and support sfz. Using wine-staging, and some .dlls from a windows setup
or download site, as 'over-rides', most non-dongled vsts work well in Reaper/wine,
in most linux distros. And using vst wrappers Airwave or LinVst,
linux versions of daws Reaper, Bitwig, and Mixbus, will also have a high success rate.
A lot has improved in 2016/17 :hyper:

https://forum.cockos.com/showthread.php?t=193761

https://forum.cockos.com/showthread.php?t=193760

are good resources regarding vst use in linux oe wine based Reaper,
and much applies to the other linux daws. The LinVst dev posts there
as new versions are released, and questions come up.
Cheers
