I have two PC's I use daily and are both <5 years old. No reinstalls needed ever. Still running as smooth as day 1.

Ok next question.

I often open .txt files into Excel.
To do this I right click the file and "Open With"

No issues here, but there are a couple of programs I would like to remove from the "open with" program list.

I cant right click and delete nor can I delete in the "choose default program" bit

Right, so the redundant "Excel 2010 Component" file is going to remain there until I die :x
I HATE THIS THING!

I think so,
I did mis-read a bit though.
I have a worse bug in Vista--
I can't actually change the program
which opens a file by default,
unless windows displays it without searching manually.
I can't select a new default program by browsing.
It says 'open' when you search,
but this doesn't do anything.
The newly selected program icon will not appear.

edit-just to let you know my Vista is updated to current

You can remove programs from that list using the registry.

Find this key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\ Explorer\FileExts\.txt\OpenWithList

Then delete what you don't want to be there.

It's been a while since I worked deeply with XP, but could you do this before without editing the registry? I don't recall.

I think you'll have to change some registry setting here:

Code: Select all

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts
You might want to look here for a small tutorial:
http://www.thewindowsclub.com/fix-unabl ... -windows-7

EDIT: oh lol koolkeys beat me to it
No band limits, aliasing is the noise of freedom!

Ok, so you don't like the new (but now old) Win7 shell. I get that. But, WTF were you doing using Windows Exploder in XP anyways? There were and are better options. Here's a shortlist:
xplorer2
or
XYPLORER
or
Total Commander
And WinExp helpers:
Folder Jump
Or
Listary
And
Launchy
And desktop cleanup:
Fences
or
Tiles

Goodbye clock, hello, Rainmeter

And you dinna need to hack the registry to change *multiple* default program options/actions with, Default Program Editor

This is a tiny shortlist of custom tweaks that YOU can make. To Win 7. To match YOUR habits and tastes.

My gawd, man, the beauty of Windows is that you could and still can tweak it to be YOUR Windows, not some dull grey myopic vision from a pathetic UI committee afraid of their place on the Redmond campus.

However, if XP's limitations are your liberation then get it back with a XP Theme
or for real, virtually, with: Virtual PC

Time get off your whine and spend some tweaking time. It's a Personal Computer. So, why not make it personal?
perception: the stuff reality is made of.

Yep, entirely serious.

I think this thread has some key points that we should bear in mind.

This thread has reminded me that with every new Windows we have had to get past out initial fears. And this involves customising/personalising. Initially we customise a lot and then bit by bit at a time.

There are probably hundreds of tweaks that I have made, been happy with and forgotten that I'd ever done.

Secondly, the difference with Win7 as opposed to XP, is in how we find our way through the customization process. Mostly the terminology appears to be the same but ask help in Win7 to find Icon Spacing and I got nada.

So I have to go on the internet and find the answer. I know for sure I got every answer on XP via Help and Support usually with search without once using the internet for the first five years as I didn't have it.

Now to Win7, I was having severe memory problems with XP (mainly down to McAfee going active 24/7) so I looked to get a new model.

And there it is to my left, an ornamental pc. Boots in about 12 seconds and is a dream to use if I use familiar programs but holds me back with the new look.

I've started using more than a couple of hours a week now and am getting the hang of it, but the customizing is a pain to find your way through. So thanks mushy mushy for having the gaul to be pissed off and shout out.

And my turn to give something back.

Icon sizing and spacing;

1/. Right click on in any empty part of the desktop.

2/. Click on Windows Color at bottom.

3/. In Windows Colour and Appearance and select

Icon,
Icon Spacing (Horizontal)
or Icon Spacing (Vertical)

and then adjust settings as required.
Then OK and Apply.

4/. Right click on in any empty part of the desktop.
Then View > Align icons to grid.

5/. You might have to do it a couple times to get it acceptable.

Very valid points.
I suppose i'm just very familiar with XP and can fly around it.
Which is half the reason why i'm annoyed really.

On the busiest day of the month instead of instinctively clicking here and there I needed to think about how to do every single little thing. Just leaving work now after a 14 hour day. Under XP (only because of the familiarity) I think I would have been done 4 hours earlier.

So to your point, yes i'm sure those tools are brilliant but i'd still have to learn them and I doubt they'd be as quick as I am doing familiar tasks. That sounds a lot like bragging, but it's really not meant to. I'm sure next to a few of you i'm positively a turtle.
