Obviously MS is taking lessons from Apple in how to milk customers, with more frequent upgrades and discontinuations

http://www.computerweekly.com/news/2240 ... XP-supportThe UK government has signed a £5.5m deal for extended support of Windows XP. Similarly the Dutch government has signed a "multi-million euro" deal to obtain help for the 40,000 PCs running XP used by the nation's civil servants.
But you cannot take your computer into the local government office or agency and get it fixed. (But that might be an idea, to offset the cost ... )

You're quite welcome.Harry_HH wrote:Thank you
P.s. For the 4) I.e. you have to uninstall every tile separately, no way to get rid of the whole metro appendix at once/totally? Although you delete the tiles, the metro interface itself stays and uses some resources, I guess.
On Windows 8.1 you can ctrl-right-click multiple tiles and select uninstall. I think that was added in 8.1 though. It might not work with a freshly installed version of 8.

Yes, this is the real travesty. Microsoft will continue to make XP security patches for special customers like governments but they won't give them or even sell them to you. They want to make you buy Windows 8. My suggestion is to look at Linux/Mac instead.DarkStar wrote:http://www.computerweekly.com/news/2240 ... How dare they!Frantz wrote: They want to make you buy Windows 8.
Absolutely, this will most likely mean much less trouble than just upgrading to a recent version of the O/S that you know and which runs all your software. My suggestion is to look at Linux/Mac instead.

It's all available. They are a public company you know?
You want to look at:
- Revenue per share
- Revenue vs equity
- Revenue vs assets
- Liabilities
- Expenses
Their only issue is that they are on what looks like a short-term dip in profits. You need to keep in mind where the majority of profits come from though - from the business division. Revenues are way up, turning that into massive profits only involves some small tweaks combined with the passage of time.
This is why Ballmer is gone and replaced with a new CEO. You can expect them to refocus on their core business and stop dinking around too much in markets where they can't even get a reasonable foot-hold. You will however see them maintain in those markets just enough so that if a shift happens they'll be ready to take up the slack from Apple along with all the others.

Musing on the points of Virtual Machines, security, hardware, politics, practicality...
It's not the end of the world. But measures need to be taken. XP is good for another 10 years yet, seems to be the consensus.

Upgrade, to 7 or 8.
It's really not that bad, I'm using both, in 32 and 64 bit, and they are fine once you get over the UI with 'Classic Shell'. 7 is fine, I actually prefer it to XP now, and I wouldn't budge for years with XP saying it was the best.
XP may have security issues after the cut of date, but I think if you have a good virus program this shouldn't be an issue.
Frankly though, how can you possibly still be holding back on an excuse to build a new studio PC, with Windows 7 or 8, are you mad, I don't get people, you have all the ammunition you need to win the argument over dinner and you don't take it. I don't know..

I wonder who is more upset; MS cause someone figured this all out, or the entities who shelled out millions of dollars for 'extended' support.
